Introduct on

I work n pr vate pract ce as a Homeopath and Astrologer and see n my

cl n c all types of cl ents. I also work over the Internet and the phone as t
doesn’t really matter where a person s located, the r suffer ng can st ll be
descr bed and helped w th.
It was because of my work as a Homeopath that I d scovered what an
Ind go s, and also because of my exper ence as an Astrologer that I found
out why the phenomenon had happened when t d d.

The f rst Ind go that I met n my pract ce, was n ne years old and v s ted
me n May 2002. H s Mum brought h m along, partly because she was
hav ng d ff culty w th the var ous labels her ch ld had been g ven but also
because he was suffer ng from sleeplessness, was argumentat ve, aggress ve
and ‘angry w th the world’. On further quest on ng (someth ng that sets
Homeopaths apart from other pract t oners, we take a very deta led case) t
transp red that a younger brother had been born bl nd w th part of h s bra n
m ss ng, terr ble ac d reflux, and was awake for 20 hours n every 24. Th s
l ttle boy d dn’t l ve long and eventually d ed. My pat ent though, had
shown a natural aff n ty for h s suffer ng and used to touch h s head before
commun cat ng w th h m, even though no-one had told h m to do th s. H s
mother sa d he had an 'understand ng’ of h s brother's needs.

W thout go ng nto any further deta ls of h s case, I prescr bed a remedy and
arranged to see h m aga n n a months t me. I met h s Mum a wh le later at
the school and she told me how he’d been at h s Nan’s and had fallen asleep
on the sofa a few days after tak ng the remedy. Because he was so qu et and
unrespons ve, h s Nan had worr ed that he’d actually d ed, as he'd never
been th s qu et before.
I knew then, that the remedy was start ng to heal h m. As th s boy had
been brought to me for Homeopath c treatment, I d dn’t automat cally draw
up h s B rth chart but after h s second follow-up, someth ng about h m
made me ask h s b rth-t me and I looked at h s chart. Dur ng th s part cular
month, I v s ted a Heal ng Fa r n Bath where I l ve and was drawn to buy a
book called ‘The Ind go Ch ldren’ by Jan Tober and Lee Carroll.

The book descr bed so accurately th s part cular boy and h s problems, that
I then bought ‘The Care and Feed ng of Ind go Ch ldren’ by Doreen V rtue,
so I could offer h s Mum some hope and expla n that th s boy sn’t a
challenge, the system look ng after h m s.
Then I compared h s chart to others n my collect on and not ced a
str k ng s m lar ty w th certa n ch ldren’s charts I had treated recently and
some I had treated qu te a few years before. Then another boy from the f rst
boy’s class was brought to me and h s chart had the same conf gurat on and
so d d my son’s, who was also n the class. In fact over 10 ch ldren n th s
year all had s m lar charts. Th s set me on a m ss on that st ll ntr gues me to
th s day.

Ind go Research
Later that year I dec ded to do a small amount of personal research and
posted some deta ls on an Ind go webs te ask ng for b rth data. The s te I
used was only v s ted by people nterested n Ind gos, and I dec ded to use
the data from 100 people. After 100 people had g ven me the r b rth data, I
publ shed, only on my own webs te the results. Of the 100 people, 95 of
them had one-s ded charts.
I thought th s was reasonably s gn f cant so I wanted other astrologers
and Ind gos to know, that there was someth ng happen ng astrolog cally
when they were born.
I w ll expla n more about Astrology n Chapter 1.

S nce I publ shed my art cle n 2004, t has been read by over 100,000
people and s st ll be ng read at a rate of about 10,000 people a year. When I
f rst publ shed t though, t was cop ed onto a number of s tes, (w thout my
perm ss on) so I don’t have completely accurate f gures about ts
readersh p. I only have the stats from my own s te, so those f gures m ght
be larger. I have kept the art cle there, so t can be read by anyone want ng
to know about the Astrology of Ind gos.

I have g ven talks about the Astrology of Ind gos and my art cle was
publ shed n the Astrolog cal Assoc at on of Great Br ta n's journal.
I thought maybe, over the years, the phenomena would d e down but I'm
st ll contacted by numbers of people every week ask ng about the r charts
and about Ind gos and have g ven adv ce and help to the people that contact
me after read ng the art cle.
Th s book has been wr tten to expand on that art cle and to g ve more
nformat on about how Astrology reflects our exper ence on planet earth
and expla ns the Astrology of Ind go phenomenon.

Chapter 1

What s Astrology?

Astrology has a very anc ent h story. As long as there have been humans
on the planet, there has been a search to make sense out of chaos and to add
mean ng to our l ves.

The f rst astrologers were the Babylon ans. They l ved n what s now
called Iraq, way before the b rth of Chr st.

A Br ef H story of Astrology

As H stor an Chr stopher McIntosh tells us:

Astrology dates back to our earl est records of human learn ng. It s the
precursor of astronomy as for many years they were one sc ence. The
ma nstream of astrology has ts source n an area wh ch was also the
beg nn ng of Western c v l sat on: the M ddle East.
Here man la d down h s hunt ng weapons, abandoned the nomad c l fe-
style, and settled down w th plough and scythe to develop an agr cultural
soc ety. Th s settled soc ety brought more le sure and a d sc pl ned
government and w th that came organ sed rel g on w th temples and pr ests.
1.

Anc ent Pr ests

The earl est references to astrology l e w th the Babylon ans n 2000
BC. The pr ests of the k ngdom of Babylon a, the present day Iraq, made
the d scovery, wh ch set the pattern for the development of astronomy and
the zod acal system of astrology that we know today. For generat ons they
method cally observed and recorded the movements of the heavenly bod es.
F nally, they d scovered, by careful calculat on that n add t on to the Sun
and the Moon, f ve other v s ble planets moved n establ shed routes
through the sky.

These were the planets that we now call Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jup ter
and Saturn.
These pr ests l ved very solated l ves n monaster es usually near to
towers called z ggurats from wh ch they could observe the n ght sky. One
major advantage of l v ng next to the Pers an Gulf was the extremely clear
sk es and they managed to make the r calculat ons w thout telescopes or any
compl cated equ pment. Every day they observed the movements of the
planets and noted down any correspond ng earthly phenomena from floods
to rebell ons. Very early on they came to the conclus on that the laws that
governed the movements of the stars and planets also governed events on
Earth.

Gods
Early on the stars and planets were regarded as be ng actual gods. Later,
as the r rel g on became more soph st cated, the two deas were separated
and the bel ef developed that the god ‘ruled’ the correspond ng planet.
Gradually, a h ghly complex system was bu lt up n wh ch each planet had a
part cular set of propert es ascr bed to t. Th s system was developed partly
through the reports of the pr ests and partly though the natural
character st cs of the planets. Mars was seen to be red n colour and was
therefore dent f ed w th the god Nergal, the f ery god of war and
destruct on. Venus was the most prom nent n the morn ng, g v ng b rth as t
were, to the day. She therefore became the planet assoc ated w th the female
qual t es of love and gentleness, as well as w th the funct on of procreat on.
At f rst the r observat ons only centred around the r commun ty but as t me
went on, between 600 and 300 BC th s system became more prec se and
dur ng th s per od nd v dual horoscopes were cast.

Astrology Today

Fast forward to today where astrology s a m xture of l ght rel ef or f rm

bel ef and hopes for the future and s pract ced n every country n the
world. What I w ll be d scuss ng here s western astrology. Each system s
based on how the planets are ‘v ewed’ from our place on earth.

The bel ef s: “As Above, So Below”. That we are all part of the same
wonderful cosmos, we all ex st because of each other, not n sp te of, and
therefore are nfluenced by and are of nfluence to, all parts of our ‘world’.
An Astrolog cal B rth chart s based on a map of the heavens on the day,
t me and locat on of someone’s b rth. The map s constructed by calculat ng
the pos t on of the var ous planets n the sky. Th s map or b rth chart s l ke
your f nger-pr nts.
It never changes. People get a b t confused about astrology and th nk the
b rth chart ‘pred cts’ everyth ng to do w th someone’s l fe. That’s not
actually true. The b rth chart llustrates what sort of character you are, your
potent al. What happens n your l fe ( n my op n on) s not fated, more the
result of cho ces you make. The pred ct ve b t of astrology s determ ned by
calculat ng where the planets w ll be n the future n relat on to where they
were when you were born. A sort of astral compar son.

Important Notes
Planet: A celest al body that orb ts around the Sun.
Star: W th the except on of the Moon and the planets, every f xed po nt
of l ght n the sky s a star, nclud ng the Sun. However n astrology we use
the term ‘planet’ for all the b ts we use. So f you catch me call ng the Sun,
a planet, that s an astrolog cal term, not one used n astronomy.

Your Chart of the Heavens

If you mag ne that the centre of a b rth chart s the earth, the map s
made up of where each planet was, n each segment of the sky, around us n
the cosmos.
We use a c rcle to plot the planet pos t ons, wh ch s now made 100%
eas er, by us ng computer programmes. In the ‘old days’ the cycles of the
movements and placements of the planets were made by educated men and
the nformat on kept n a book called an Ephemer s. Nowadays, all you
need to do s use a good computer programme or the wonderful free Sw ss
resource http://www.astro.com

If you go to the r webs te and make an account, you can create your
own chart. I do recommend us ng the chart-mak ng system called Equal
House. After you’ve created your account, go to the page marked free
horoscopes and scroll down unt l you see Extended Chart Select on. Cl ck
on th s and you’ll now be on a page w th lots of opt ons. Th s s the page
Astrologers use to make the r charts personal and the way they l ke them as
there are at least 5 chart systems.

Chart Systems
There are numerous way to calculate a chart. I use the system called
Equal House as t s the oldest system and I th nk f t sn’t broken don’t f x
t! The other systems were ntroduced by var ous d fferent blokes over the
years and are called th ngs l ke Plac dus (after the man that used t), Koch
(d tto) Reg omontanus. Most computer programmes are automat cally set to
Plac dus wh ch makes your chart look lop-s ded and uneven. Unfortunately
astro.com s set to th s system and you won’t see the correct shape of a chart
us ng t.
We’re now go ng to make your chart us ng Equal House.
On th s page, scroll to data and choose equal house, gnore all the
others…..
Now cl ck the red button: 'make chart' and b ngo! Your chart w ll appear
on the next page as equal house and all your houses, or segments of your
chart w ll be of equal s ze = 30 degrees.

You w ll need three p eces of nformat on to make your chart: your date
of b rth, your t me of b rth, and your locat on of b rth.
We are go ng to use the mag nary chart of someone called Ben who
was born on 15 September 1980, at 4 PM n London England.

Each b rth chart or horoscope ncludes the 10 planets: The Sun, the
Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jup ter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
The last three weren't d scovered by the Babylon ans as telescopes hadn't
been nvented and they were far too d stant n space to be seen w th the
naked eye but knowledge of the r ex stence s v tal to understand Ind gos.
Each planet represents a d fferent part of the psyche.

The most mportant parts of a chart for a beg nner are the Ascendant,
the s gn of the Sun and the s gn of the Moon. In my How to Surv ve the
Zod ac ser es of books I expla n what are the mean ngs of each house.

The Ascendant
How you came nto the world
The Ascendant s determ nded by the actual t me of b rth, so you need to
know the accurate t me to get the correct Ascendant because t changes s gn
every two hours. So someone born at 10am w ll have a d fferent Ascendant
from someone born at 12pm. In astrology we class fy the Ascendant as
be ng the ous de part of you, the b t that people meet f rst. The mage we
want people to see n fact the mage people w ll see. Your Ascendant s what
you d splay at a party, or to your parents, or when you’re under pressure.
It’s the coat you wear, the glasses you see the world through, how you
v ewed the world when you came nto t. Your beg nn ng. As you were
be ng born, the most mportant part of your chart was n a s gn s gn fy ng
how you ‘came nto the world’. It could be n the s gn of V rgo mak ng you
d scr m nat ng, analyt cal and prone to want ng to categor se th ngs. Or t
could be n the s gn of Cancer, want ng to ‘feel at home’ , lov ng Mum,
want ng protect on and f nanc al secur ty. Each s gn has a d fferent
mean ng. So you could be a Leo = f rey, jolly, dramat c w th a Capr corn
Ascendant = shy, amb t ous, determ nded.
Or maybe you were born around 6am, then your Ascendant and your
Sun s gn w ll be probabally n the same s gn. Tak ng nto account your
Ascendant makes your chart nd v dual to you and far more personal sed
than just know ng your Sun s gn....

The Sun
Rules who you are

The Sun represents who you are. The ego. That wh ch dent f es you.
Most people know what Sun s gn they are, even f they don’t know
anyth ng else about astrology. In a b rth chart the s gn and locat on (house
placement) of the Sun descr bes how you w ll tackle l fe. W ll you be
fearless or t m d, creat ve or sporty? It also descr bes what you w ll f nd
nterest ng and how you w ll express your personal ty. As the Sun goes
through each s gn of the Zod ac, t corresponds w th the seasons, so
someone who was born n December (above the equator) w ll have been
born n the W nter.
From our v ewpo nt on Earth, t looks as f the Sun moves from one part
of the sky to another as the seasons progress, and t was th s movement that
the Babylon ans plotted.
The Sun s a star and a l fe-g v ng one at that. W thout t our l ves would
be bleak and cold. In astrology we v ew the Sun as tell ng us what our
mot vat on s, what our sense of self s and how we are created. The ma n
focus of our personal ty.
Look ng at t n a very s mpl st c manner, someone born dur ng the
month of August s l kely to be a b t more 'sunny' than someone born n the
depths of W nter.
Most people resonate w th the standard descr pt ons of the r Sun s gn.
There s a b g d fference between a Capr corn and a Leo! The s gn of the
Sun changes every 30 days or so and doesn’t qu te correspond to the
months of the year as they are based on maths not on the cycle of the Sun.
The general accepted dates are :
Ar es 21 March - 20 Apr l
Taurus 21 Apr l - 21 May
Gem n 22 May - 21 June
Cancer 22 June- 22 July
Leo 23 July – 23 August
V rgo 24 August - 22 September
L bra 23 September – 23 October
Scorp o 24 October – 22 November
Sag ttar us 23 November – 21 December
Capr corn 22 December – 20 January
Aquar us 21 January – 18 February
P sces 19 February – 20 March

No Such Th ng as a Cusp
If you were born on the day when the Sun was chang ng s gn, check
w th astro.com to f nd out, once and for all, exactly what s gn you are as
there s no such th ng as a cusp. You are e ther one s gn or another, you
can’t be both!

The Moon
Rules the emot ons and nst ncts

The Moon n Astrology represents how we feel about th ngs. If the Sun
s who we are, and the Ascendant s how we project ourselves, then the
Moon s how we respond emot onally to th ngs. In real ty the Moon reflects
the l ght of the Sun, so we say t represents how we are emot onally,
subconc ously. As you may know the Moon affects the t des and the water
on Earth, and our emot ons are generally qu te watery th ngs!
The s gn of your Moon m ght be completely d fferent to the s gn of your
Sun. th s s because the Moon changes s gn approx mately every two days.
Th s can make your l fe more compl cated unt l you get to gr ps w th those
d fferent s gns and energ es. Someone w th a F re s gn Sun and a Water s gn
Moon m ght f nd t harder to allow the r emot ons to flow. There could be a
confl ct between want ng someth ng and be ng emot onally settled w th t.

The B rth Chart

When you've created your chart, t m ght look l ke gobbledeegook at
f rst glance. Don't get put off by all the we rd symbols and the coloured
l nes go ng through t. Th s s just an nternat onal astrolog cal language that
anyone from any country n the world can nterpret.
If you knew noth ng about Astrology before you chose th s book, you
m ght have thought ‘but I’m a Scorp o, why would I need to know about all
the other s gns?’

We have ALL the s gns n all of our charts. Our Sun s gn m ght be one
s gn but as there are 10 planets t’s unl kely that we’ll have all our planets n
all of the s gns. Even f our planets are n only a few s gns, our houses w ll
conta n the m ss ng s gns and every month the Moon w ll trans t through
them, and over your l fe-t me all the other planets w ll too.
Some mover faster than others, the Moon be ng the fastest.

Th s s what your b rth chart (or natal chart as they call t n the USA)
w ll show you: Wh ch b ts are n wh ch s gns.
Your chart, nstead of hav ng the s gns Ar es to P sces wr tten on them,
w ll have these symbols for each s gn. We call them glyphs.

The S gns and The r Symbols

Ar es
Here we have the Ram's horns, ready to 'push' you forward

Taurus

In anc ent t mes, the cattle had curly horns, so the symbol for the bull s
aga n the horns

Gem n

As Gem n s the tw ns, the glyph symbol has two parts jo ned at the top
and bottom

Cancer

The glyph for Cancer represents the nurtur ng breasts

Leo

The L on's mane makes the symbol for Leo

V rgo

The symbol for V rgo looks l ke a cap tal M w th ts ta l curled nwards,

(not to be confused w th Scorp o's symbol that s s m lar but the ta l po nts
outwards and has a st ng on the end!) It's sa d to represent the ntest nes, as
th s s the area of the body 'ruled' by V rgo.

L bra

The L bra scales of just ce are represented n the r symbol and are the
only nan mate object n the Zod ac.

Scorp o

The symbol for Scorp o s the cap tal M aga n (l ke V rgo) and has a ta l
w th a po nty end, represent ng the st ng of the Scorp on
