MAIN GROUP 7 - SYSTEM FOR MAIN ENGINE COMPONENTS

Pipeline systems - general


All pipelines to be as per good marine standard, according to system drawings approved by
the Owners and to the satisfaction of equipment suppliers involved as required. Classification
Society's and National Authority's approvals to be obtained on systems where required.
Pipes to be delivered with certificates to the extent required by the Classification Societies.

The pipe layout shall, as far as practical, permit unobstructed access along walkways, and
access for operation, maintenance and inspection of equipment and components. The pipe
routing shall also ensure free access to all doors, manholes and floor plates as far as
practically.

Mud boxes, strainers, valves, etc. are in general to be arranged as required for systems
operation safety and according to Class requirements.
One non-return valve shall be fitted on discharge side of all pumps to avoid unintended
reverse flow.

Bell mouth to be provided at each suction head in tanks as required.

Foundations for L.O. and F.O. pumps, separator(-s), plate type heat exchangers, filters, etc.
where waist oil can occur to be equipped with waste tray with drain pipe to the dirty oil tank
in double bottom via a common header. The header drop line to the tank to be fitted with a
manual shut off valve.

Marking of pipelines, valves, fittings, etc., ref. item 448.

Material (Piping and valves)


Material and size of piping system, including valves and cocks, strainers, etc. to be of
International Standards.
The pipelines, pumps and valves shall be according to Appendix 1 “Pipes, Pumps & Fitting
Standard”.

Steel pipes shall be generally galvanized, except as mentioned against individual systems.
However, pipes running through oil tanks shall not to be galvanized.

The materials to be used in piping systems are to be suitable for the medium and service for
which the system is intended. Components applied in the systems are to be constructed in
materials compatible with piping material and system fluids.

Suitable Ermeto type couplings shall be provided for small bore (below 25 mm) high pressure
piping except compressed air system, which shall be provided with flanges.

Pipes above ND40 in general to be flanged, for pipes below ND40 flanges or welding sleeves
to be used according to agreement between Owner and Yard.
Couplings may be applied over all where the Class permits.
For air pipes welded connections may be applied.
Sounding pipes with self-closing sounding valves to have 1 1/2" tread connection.

Workmanship
Piping to be led straight as far as practicable with a minimum number of bends and with an
adequate number of flange joints for access and removal.
Consideration also to be given in design to system flow resistance with regard to pipe bore,
pipe arrangement, workmanship, pump characteristics, etc.
Saddles to be used for “T” & “X” joints.

The pipelines to be equipped with expansion joints or to be laid with expansion bends where
necessary to avoid damage due to expansion or movement of the structure. Where fuel oil pipe
and lub oil pipe are laid on hot areas, screens to be arranged. Pipe lines to be provided with
drainage and/or ventilation facilities as appropriate.

All pipes to be well clamped to the ship’ structure.


For steel pipes flat steel clamps or U-type steel bolts to be provided, pipes shall be adequately
clamped/supported to prevent vibrations and allow for expansion..
For galvanized steel pipes galvanized flat steel clamps or similar to be applied.
For copper pipes flat steel clamps with neoprene or lead lining to be provided.
Clamps normally to be welded, but bolted if this is more practical.
Bolts on clamps inside tanks to be provided with self-locking nuts.

Hot dip galvanised pipes to be hot dip galvanized after completed welding and treatment.
In general welding on hot dip galvanized pipes to be avoided.
Welded seams on pre-galvanised pipes to be sprayed by zink spray or similar. Minor
damages during installation & welding on board, shall be touched up with zinc paint.

Where piping penetrates into the watertight or oil tight bulkheads or decks, the connection to
be made tight by means of three-flanged piece, sleeve joint or direct welded pipe as per
shipbuilding practice.

Lub oil pipes, fuel oil pipes, hydraulic pipes and pressure air pipes to be cleaned thoroughly.
Lub oil- and Hydraulic pipe system testing and cleaning procedures to be according to the
standards required by supplier of hydraulic machinery.

Sufficient drain shall be arranged for the high pressure air system pipelines.

All pumps to be fitted with gauges on both pressure and suction side of pumps.
Inlet/outlets of coolers to be fitted with thermometers.

Inlet/outlets on FW side of heat exchangers to be fitted with manometers.

Valves
Valves to be of class approved type as required. Consideration to be given to system’s flow
resistance when valves are selected.
Butterfly valves of good quality to be applied where this is considered practical.

The valves fitted to hull shall be duly approved by classification society.

70 FUEL OIL SYSTEM


General
The ship to be arranged with fuel oil system based upon engines operating on gas oil.
(According to ISO 8217) and HF HSD fuel

Main engines’ fuel oil system to be divided into two independent systems and to have fuel
supply from either of the service/settling tanks described below.

Tanks
One (1) Service tanks and one (1) combined Settling-/Service tank for gas oil and HF HSD
fuel oil to be arranged in accordance with Class requirements.
Service tanks to have manual filling from bunker tanks via the transfer pumps, ref. item 701.
The tanks to be equipped with high/low level alarms, waste tray with drain, overflow and oil
level gauge to fulfil Class requirements.

Remote quick closing arrangements for fuel valves, emergency shut down for fuel pumps,
etc. shall be provided as required by SOLAS regulations.
The valves shall be closable from weather deck.

Fuel oil storage tanks to be arranged according to Tank plan.


Fuel oil bunker stations, ref. item 351.

One (1) Overflow / Drain tank to be arranged according to Tank plan. The tank to have
overflow from all fuel oil bunker tanks and from service / settling tanks. Ref. also item 821.

The tank to be equipped with sounding and level alarms.

701 Fuel Oil Drain- and Transfer System

Fuel oil transfer pumps to be installed as follows:

The pumps shall be directly coupled to a 3 Phase, 50 Hz, 400 V motor complete with locally
mounted starter.
The pump and motor shall be mounted on a combined base plate.
The pumps shall have remote stop outside engine room.

The transfer pumps shall have built-on safety valve.

The transfer pumps to be backup for each other.


The pumps to have suction from storage tanks and with supply to the service/settling tanks.
The fuel oil transfer pumps shall also take suction from and deliver to any of the bunker tank.

Waste trays of F.O pumps and purifiers shall be drained to sludge tank.

702 Fuel Oil Separation Plant

The vessel is to be equipped with separator for gas oil / HF HSD fuel oil as follows:

703 Fuel Oil Consumer System

Main engines
The manufacturer’s standard filter equipment, by duplex filter, to be installed on the main
engine.
FO heat exchanger shall be installed according to engine manufacturer’s requirements.

Aux. engine
Aux. engine to have built-on fuel oil pump.
Standard filter equipment to be installed in aux. engine supply lines according to Class.
The fuel oil system to be designed according to engine manufacturer’s recommendation.

Emergency generator engine


The emergency generator set to be located in a separate room and to have separate service
tank for Gas oil / HF HSD fuel oil with capacity according to rules.
Filling facilities to be arranged from fuel oil purifier discharge.

71 LUB. OIL SYSTEM

711 Lub. Oil Transfer and Drain Systems

General
Transfer systems shall be provided for filling and emptying the engines, main gearboxes,
thruster, hydraulic system, etc. The systems shall be segregated to avoid any mixing of
different oils.

Hull integrated storage tanks


Hull integrated lub oil storage tanks for major equipment to be arranged. The tanks to be
arranged for following purposes:
• One (1) LO storage tank for Main engines
• One (1) LO storage tank for Auxiliary engines
• One (1) LO storage tank for Main gearboxes
• One (1) LO storage tank for Tunnel thrusters

Each storage tank to have separate filling line from deck. The storage tanks shall be equipped
with air pipes, sounding device, tapping cocks and waste tray. The waste tray shall be drained
to sludge tank.

Transfer systems
Main engines’ LO systems to be filled by gravity via permanent installed piping systems
from LO storage tank for main engines.
Main engines’ LO systems to be emptied by gravity and ME priming pump via permanent
installed piping systems to sludge tank.

Auxiliary engines’ LO systems to be filled by gravity via non-permanent flexible hose from
LO storage tank for auxiliary engines.
Auxiliary engines’ LO systems to be emptied by gravity/separate hand pump via non-
permanent flexible hose to sludge tank.

Main reduction gears’ LO systems to be filled by gravity via permanent installed piping
systems from LO storage tank for main gearboxes located above the gears.
Main reduction gears’ LO systems to be emptied by the gears’ LO standby pump via
permanent installed piping systems to sludge tank.

Tunnel thrusters’ LO systems to be filled by a separate lub oil transfer pump (ref table above)
via permanent installed piping systems from LO storage tanks for tunnel thrusters.

Fixed free standing stores tanks


The tanks to be installed and located adequate for following purposes:
• One (1) Min. 210 l stores tank for steering gear.
• One (1) Min. 210 l stores tank for tugger winches.
• One (1) Min. 210 l stores tank for windlass.

Sludge tank
In double bottom engine room, one (1) sludge tank to be arranged with capacity according to
Class requirements for drainage from separator(-s), for drainage from waste tray and
emptying of engines and gear. Sludge handling system, ref. item 803.

712 Lub oil purification plant


One (1) lub oil separator of capacity 2500 lit/hr shall be provided.

The separator shall be provided liquid seal breakage alarm device.

The separator to be of manual cleaning type with 60 kW electric pre-heater and separate
electric driven supply pump.

Purifier to be piped separately to each engine with manual crossover function available.

Purifier shall be supplied mounted on separate base plates that also form a waste tray with
drain pipe and valve connected to the dirty oil tank.

713 Lub. Oil System for Propulsion Machinery and Transmissions

Main engines
Separate LO system for each main engine to be arranged.
Engines to be of type with wet sump.
Each main engine to have one (1) engine driven lubrication oil pump and one (1) separate
electric driven priming/standby pump. The pumps shall have suction from sump and delivery
to the engine.
Lub. oil cooler to be freshwater cooled.
Lub oil system to be thermostatically regulated.
Engine manufacturer’s standard lub.oil filter equipment to be fitted.

The main engines crank case to have ventilation leading to forecastle deck. The pipes shall
have goose neck with wire-mesh for flame arresting.

Main gears
Each gear to be equipped with a built-on oil system.

Stern tubes and stern tube tanks


For the stern tube a pressurized level tank to be arranged which provides a static pressure for
the stern tube.
The tanks to be located above the deep loading line and be prepared for an air pressure of 0,2
– 0,3 bar depending on maker’s calculations. Level switch shall be provided on stern tube
header tank as per rule requirement to give low-level alarm. The discharge valve on the tank
shall be locked in open position.

The stern tube to be arranged with drain and the drain valve shall be locked in closed
position.
Drain plug shall be provided for stern tube.

One (1) min. 400 litres storage tank to be installed.

714 Lub.Oil System - Auxiliary Engine

Auxiliary engine to have lub.oil system built on.

72 COOLING SYSTEMS

General:
Each main propulsion plant shall be served by an independent thermostatically regulated FW
cooling system.
SW/FW heat exchanger shall be dimensioned to give sufficient cooling for connected
equipment running at maximum continuous load, with a S.W. inlet temperature of up to
32°C.

Velocity in Seawater pipes generally not exceed 2.5 m/s.


Velocity in Freshwater pipes shall generally not exceed 3.5 m/s.
15% fouling to be included in design calculations for sea water heat exchangers.

The systems shall in general serve as follows:

System no. 1:
PS propulsion plant, comprising: Main engine and misc equipment like; main gear, shaft
generator, aux. engine, bulk handling compressor(s), Fi-Fi gearbox, and stern thruster motor.

System no. 2:
SB propulsion plant, comprising: Main engine and misc equipments like; main gear, shaft
generator, aux. engine, Fi-Fi gearbox, and bow thrusters motors.

Alternatively; the two auxiliary engines can be arranged with self-contained SW and FW
cooling systems built-on the engines, as per manufacturer’s standard.

721 Seawater (SW) Cooling system

SW for cooling purposes shall be provided as described below.


Throttling Valves (saunders or similar) for flow regulating shall be fitted for all circuits.

Sea inlets:
Two sea inlets to be arranged in engine room area, one low suction and one high suction. The
suction pipes shall penetrate into sea chests in order to avoid air suction. After each inlet
valve a M.S. galvanized strainer (fabricated type) shall be installed.
The chests to be arranged with connections for vent pipe and compressed air.
Strainer plates in inlet of the sea chests shall be of galvanized steel.

Chemical dosing system for sea water system shall be arranged.

Overboard valves shall be closable non-return valves.

The sea inlets shall be connected to each other via a cross over main, which is to be built as
an integral part of the double bottom.
Main seawater cross over line from low to high suction to be arranged in the double bottom
of the engine room and this section of double bottom to have increase wall thickness to
15mm. Access manholes to be provided for this area from both inside and outside of the hull
to allow blasting and painting at dry-dock time.

Seawater pumps and closing valve shall be mounted directly to the crossover section by
threaded set–on flange with SUS studs welded directly to the deck. The trunk shall be of
sufficient length to allow for easy installation of all pumps accordingly.

Sea water cooling system for Main engines – System 1 and 2


Two (2) off electric motor driven sea water pumps shall be installed.
Each pumps to provide cooling water to one main SW/FW cooling system.
The pumps to be arranged as back-up for each other.

Each pump shall be dimensioned for max. load of one main engine and the connected
equipment. Each pump should cover for cooling water requirement for both main SW/FW
cooling system at times during low load operation (less than 50% of full load).

The SW pumps shall be supplied with automatic air ejector.

50 mm stub pipes with blanks are to be fitted to the saltwater inlet and outlets of both coolers,
for acid cleaning. Stub pipes to be fitted with SS ball valves.

722 Fresh water cooling system

Freshwater cooling system for Main engines - System. 1 and 2


One (1) off central cooler to be installed in each system.
The SW/FW coolers to be of plate type with port strainers/filter, clip on seals, and with plates
of Titanium material.
One seawater strainer to be fitted at the water inlet of each heat exchanger. This is in addition

Each system shall consist of a common low temperature (LT) circuit and with integrated high
temperature (HT) circuits for main engine.
The cooling circuits to be thermostatically regulated, thermostatic valves to be of fixed
setting (wax) type.
The low temperature circuits shall be based on a temperature of 37ºC after thermostat valve /
FW coolers.

One expansion tank of adequate capacity shall be provided for each of the main engine fresh
water cooling system and installed suitably.

pumps shall be provided for both aux engines.

Main gear – Freshwater cooling system

742 Exhaust Pipe and Silencer

All exhaust pipes to be laid to the top of the funnel, and directed outwards and aft.
Penetration in funnel top plate to have collar to prevent ingress of rain water.

The pipes to be resiliently suspended in such a way that no vibration is transmitted to the
accommodation bulkheads and clamped in such a way they can freely expand. Expansion
compensators to be fitted where necessary.

Silencers
In exhaust pipes, from main engines and auxiliary engine, spark arrestors / silencers with 35
dB (A) attenuation to be arranged. The exhaust pipes and the silencers to be resiliently
suspended.

Insulation
The exhaust pipes to be properly insulated (as required by Class) with mineral wool.
Insulation thickness to be 50 mm for the main engines and 40 mm for the auxiliary engine.
The insulation to be covered with galvanized steel lining.

Drain
Drain from exhaust pipes at the lowest horizontal section to be arranged.

79 AUTOMATION SYSTEM FOR THE MACHINERY PLANT

791 Manoeuvre Desks, Main Console, Instruments

All consoles to be made of steel plates.


The equipment shall generally be mounted in the top of the console. The consoles to have
detachable covers in the front.
Final layout / arrangement to be approved by Owner during detail design.

a) Engine control room consoles.

i) Engine room console to be installed in engine control. The following equipment to


be installed in the console:

792 Alarm/Monitoring System

General
One (1) monitoring/alarm system for machinery and equipment to be installed. The system
shall be of approved type and have sufficient capacity to fulfil the class and main suppliers
requirements.
The acoustic signal shall have a loudness that can be heard in the engine room when the
machinery is in service.

System Structure/ Hardware


The systen to be run on safe power supply. Failure of normal power supply shall give alarm.

Operator stations/Alarm panels


One (1) master alarm panel in ECR. Five (5) group alarm unit located as follows: Bridge fore
and aft, messroom, chief and 2nd engineers cabin.

Alarm / Monitoring
The installed alarm system shall be able to indicate at the same time more than one fault,
and the acceptance of any alarm shall not hinder another alarm. Alarms shall remain

Testing of alarm and monitoring system


Equipment manufacturers and the shipyard should provide necessary test cocks and other
additions to enable easy testing of monitoring equipment, alarms and shutdowns.

793 Remote control of propellers

The vessel shall have Ulstein electronic-hydraulic remote control system for main engines
and C.P. propellers.

There will be 2 electrically totally independent plants, one port and one starboard. A failure
in the port plant will not put the starboard plant out of operation and vice versa.

Each plant to have two galvanic isolated power supplies.

Each plant - port and starboard - consists of the following main components:
1 Main bridge panel, mounted in aft bridge console
1 Slave bridge panel, mounted in forward bridge console
1 Engine room panel, mounted in engine control room room console
1 Electronic cabinet, containing all electronic components
Mounted in engine watch keeping room.
1 Hydraulic (servo) unit, mounted on each gear, including electromechanical actuator,
feed-back pot. meters, alarm sensors for the machinery alarm plant etc.

Operation mode Combinator:


When combinator operation is used, both the main engines RPM and the pitch will be
increased / decreased accordingly, depending on the given order.

By using the lever on the wheelhouse panel, or any other panel in command, an electronic
signal will be given to the main engines governors and the electric mechanical actuator for
pitch control.

Operation mode Constant (fixed) RPM:


In modes of operation using shaft generator(s), fixed RPM on the corresponding main
engines are required. By using the selecting fixed RPM mode on the engine room panel,
the main engines will automatically be running at the pre-set RPM.

In this condition, the control lever on the manoeuvre panel in command will control only
the pitch, as the RPM is fixed.

The pitch control will be as for combinatory operation. The only difference will be that
RPM are now fixed.

Failure
If the electronics discover a system failure, the plant will automatically be switched over to
emergency control. The system failure indicator lamp on the wheelhouse panels will be
lighted together with the indicator lamp for emergency control. In addition, a signal will be
given to the vessel's engine alarm plant.
The pitch can then be controlled by the emergency control push buttons on the wheelhouse
panel in command.

Apart from the electromechanical actuator / serve valve, the emergency control is
independent of the normal control, and have 24V DC power supply.

Emergency Machinery Telegraph


Engine telegraph for emergency manoeuvring shall be installed according to rules.

If a serious emergency situation should set even the emergency control out of operation, the
pitch can be manually controlled. The order from the wheelhouse will then be given by using
the emergency machinery telegraph, and the pitch will be manually controlled by operating a
lever on the reduction gearbox.

The emergency machinery telegraphs - one port and one starboard - are independent of the
vessel's ordinary remote control system. They shall be connected to 24V DC battery. There
shall be one unit for each side in the forward bridge console, (the transmitter), one unit at
each gear (the receiver) and one slave (indication) unit at each main engine.

The receiver shall have acknowledgement push-button. The orders, given by operating a
switch or push-buttons in the wheelhouse transmitter, shall be visually shown on the receiver
by means of clearly marked indication lamps. An audible signal shall be given when a new
command is transmitted.

Automatic overload protection of main engines:


To prevent overload, the main engines are protected by means of an engine load signal and
RPM signal. If the signal exceeds the allowed value, the pitch will be reduced accordingly.

The size of the reduction, and the speed of it, will depend on the overload. A heavy overload
will lead to a fast and large pitch reduction. Then the pitch will be stabilised on a level where
the engines are not overloaded.

When using shaft generator, the corresponding main propeller's pitch will be reduced
analogous to the shaft generator's load on the main engine, by means of the automatic
overload protection system.

When supplying side thrusters etc. from the shaft generator's which prime mover is also
driving the main propeller and possible also the FiFi-pumps, a fixed pitch reduction will be
introduced on the corresponding main propeller. This pitch reduction will be in steps
according to the corresponding shaft generator's load. If higher load, the automatic overload
system will come into function for a further pitch reduction.

When operating in extreme hot conditions a fixed pitch reduction shall be introduced as per
engine makers’ recommendation. See also 601.

795 Safety Systems

Main Engine Safety System


A safety system for protection and control of each of the main engines shall be provided. The
safety system shall control and protect the main engines in order to prevent faulty operation
and/or major failure. The system shall automatic stop the engine upon critical failure which
may lead to breakdown of the engines, so as too low lub.oil pressure, overspeed, in addition
to any further requirements according to the Class.

The safety panel cabinet shall be located in the engine room.

Aux. Engine Safety System


A safety system for protection and control of the aux. engines shall be provided. The safety
system shall be similar to the safety system for the main engine.

The safety system for the aux. engines may include alarm and monitoring of the engine as
well. If so, the alarm shall be clearly indicated on the safety system panel / cabinet. In
addition a common alarm for the aux. engines shall be given to the central alarm plant.
Alarm:
- Low lub oil pressure
- High cooling water temperature
Shut Downs:
- Over speed
- Very low lub oil pressure

The safety panel / cabinet shall be located in the engine control room.
