The Holy Spirit – the glory of God in the form of a dove

(1877-1901)

Luke 3:21-22 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass,
that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, and
the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and
a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in
thee I am well pleased. (KJV)

After Christ was baptized, He bowed on the banks of Jordan, and

never before had heaven listened to such a prayer, as came from his
divine lips. Christ took our nature upon Himself. The glory of God in
the form of a dove of burnished gold, rested upon Him, and from the
infinite glory was heard these words, “This is my beloved Son, in whom
I am well pleased.” [Matthew 3:16, 17.] The human race is encircled by
the human arm of Christ, while with His divine arm He grasps the
throne of the Infinite One. The prayer of Christ cleaved right through
the darkness and entered where God is. To each of us it means that
heaven is open before us, that the gates are ajar, that the glory is
imparted to the Son of God and all who believe in His name. Our
petition will be heard in heaven, as He [God] answered the petition of
whom? Our Surety, our Substitute, the Son of the infinite God. {Ms27-
1893 (October 15, 1893) par. 7} (1893.10.15)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms27-1893.7&para=6091.12

And what was the result of that prayer <such> as angels and
seraphim and cherubim had never listened to before. It was their
Commander in human nature, that was putting up the cry in behalf of
human nature, that God Himself would give the strength that man must
have in order to be conqueror. And what was the result? The heaven
was opened before him, the glory of God in the form of a dove of
burnished gold encircled the Son of man, while the infinite Father
speaks. Hear His voice: “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well
pleased.” [Matthew 3:16,17.] Well what does that say to you and me? It
tells us that we may, everyone, obtain the victory over every temptation,
however severe, however trying, through the merits of our Lord and
Saviour, Jesus Christ. {Ms12-1895 (May 19, 1895) par. 9} (1895.05.19)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms12-1895.9&para=4759.14

The Lord can take every one of us in His embrace, for His arm
encircles the race. Let us remember this. After Christ (in behalf of the
human race) had taken the necessary steps in repentance, conversion,
and faith, He went to John to be baptized of him in Jordan. “John forbad
him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to
me?” Jesus answered, “Suffer it to be so now; for thus it becometh us to
fulfil all righteousness.” When He came up out of the water, He knelt
down on the banks of the Jordan and offered a prayer such as had never
before entered heaven. While He was praying, the heavens opened, and
the glory of God, in the form of a dove of burnished gold, rested
upon Him, and from the highest heaven was heard the voice of the
infinite One, God the Father, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am
well pleased.” [Matthew 3:13-17.] {Ms144-1901 (April 3, 1901) par.
16} (1901.04.03); {GCB, April 4, 1901 par. 15} (1901.04.04)

https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_GCB.April.4.1901.Art.A.par.15&para=448.732

Never before had angels listened to such a prayer as Christ offered at

his baptism, and they were solicitous to be the bearers of the message
from the Father to his Son. But, no; direct from the Father issues the
light of his glory. The heavens were opened, and beams of glory rested
upon the Son of God, and assumed the form of a dove, in appearance
like burnished gold. The dove-like form was emblematical of the
meekness and gentleness of Christ. While the people stood spell-bound
with amazement, their eyes fastened upon Christ, from the opening
heavens came these words: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am
well pleased.” The words of confirmation that Christ is the Son of God
was given to inspire faith in those who witnessed the scene, and to
sustain the Son of God in his arduous work. Notwithstanding the Son of
God was clothed with humanity, yet Jehovah, with his own voice,
assures him of his sonship with the Eternal. In this manifestation to his
Son, God accepts humanity as exalted through the excellence of his
beloved Son. {2SP 60.2} (1877)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_2SP.60.2&para=143.230

Never before have the angels listened to such a prayer. They are
eager to bear to their loved Commander a message of assurance and
comfort. But no; the Father Himself will answer the petition of His
Son. Direct from the throne issue the beams of His glory. The
heavens are opened, and upon the Saviour’s head descends a dovelike
form of purest light,—fit emblem of Him, the meek and lowly
One. {DA 112.1}
Of the vast throng at the Jordan, few except John discerned the
heavenly vision. Yet the solemnity of the divine Presence rested upon
the assembly. The people stood silently gazing upon Christ. His form
was bathed in the light that ever surrounds the throne of God. His
upturned face was glorified as they had never before seen the face of
man. From the open heavens a voice was heard saying, “This is My
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” {DA 112.2} (1898)

The Holy Spirit – the glory of the Father, given to Christ (1892-
1896)

John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with
the glory which I had with thee before the world was. (KJV)

John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be
with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast
given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
(KJV)

Jesus is waiting to breathe upon all his disciples, and give them the
inspiration of his sanctifying spirit, and transfuse the vital influence
from himself to his people. He would have them understand that
henceforth they cannot serve two masters. Their lives cannot be
divided. Christ is to live in his human agents, and work through their
faculties, and act through their capabilities. Their will must be
submitted to his will, they must act with his spirit, that it may be no
more they that live, but Christ that liveth in them. Jesus is seeking to
impress upon them the thought that in giving his Holy Spirit he is
giving to them the glory which the Father has given him, that he and
his people may be one in God. {Lt11b-1892 (July 17, 1892) par. 7} {ST

Christ impresses upon the mind of believers the fact that they are to
have the glory which the Father has given him, in order that all who
love and serve him may be one with God. “For I have given unto them
the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have
known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that
thou didst send me.... And the glory which thou gavest me I have
given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and
thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world
may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast
loved me.{Lt13-1894 (September 27, 1894) par. 17} (1894.09.27);

The Holy Spirit - the presence of God, the personal presence of

Christ (1888-1911)

“I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you.” The divine
Spirit that the world’s Redeemer promised to send, is the presence and
power of God. {ST November 23, 1891, par. 1} (1891.11.23)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_ST.November.23.1891.par.1&para=820.10683

The work of the holy Spirit is immeasurably great. It is from this

source that power and efficiency come to the worker for God; and the
holy Spirit is the comforter, as the personal presence of Christ to the
soul. He who looks to Christ in simple, childlike faith is made a
partaker of the divine nature through the agency of the Holy Spirit. {RH

I testify to my brethren and sisters that the church of Christ,

enfeebled and defective as it may be, is the only object on earth on
which He bestows His supreme regard. While He extends to all the
world His invitation to come to Him and be saved, He commissions His
angels to render divine help to every soul that cometh to Him in
repentance and contrition, and He comes personally by His Holy
Spirit into the midst of His church. {Lt2d-1892 (December 23, 1892)

Not to keep the commandments of God is not to love Him. None will
keep the law of God unless they love Him who is the only begotten of
the Father. And none the less surely, if they love Him, they will express
that love by obedience to Him. All who love Christ will be loved of the
Father, and He will manifest Himself to them. In all their emergencies
and perplexities they will have a helper in Jesus Christ. {Ms44-1897
(May 13, 1897) par. 3} {SW September 13, 1898, par. 1}
That Christ should manifest Himself to them, and yet be invisible to
the world, was a mystery to the disciples. They could not understand the
words of Christ in their spiritual sense. They were thinking of the
outward, visible manifestation. They could not take in the fact that they
could have the presence of Christ with them, and yet He be unseen by
the world. They did not understand the meaning of a spiritual
manifestation. {Ms44-1897 (May 13, 1897) par. 3} (1897.05.13); {SW

The Lord encourages all who seek Him with the whole heart. He
gives them His Holy Spirit, the manifestation of His presence and
favor. But those who forsake God in order to save their lives will be
forsaken by Him. In seeking to save their lives by yielding the truth,
they will lose eternal life. {Ms9-1900 (January 26, 1900) par. 9}

…Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands in
blessing, bade them, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel,”
adding, “Lo, I am with you alway” (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:20); when
on the Day of Pentecost the promised Comforter descended and the
power from on high was given and the souls of the believers thrilled
with the conscious presence of their ascended Lord—then, even
though, like His, their pathway led through sacrifice and martyrdom,
would they have exchanged the ministry of the gospel of His grace,
with the “crown of righteousness” to be received at His coming, for the
glory of an earthly throne, which had been the hope of their earlier
discipleship? {GC 350.1} (1888,1911)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_GC.350.1&para=132.1600

While Jesus ministers in the sanctuary above, He is still by His

Spirit the minister of the church on earth. He is withdrawn from the eye
of sense, but His parting promise is fulfilled, “Lo, I am with you alway,
even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. While He delegates
His power to inferior ministers, His energizing presence is still with
His church. {DA 166.2} (1898)

Christ by the Holy Spirit is there to set the seal to His own
ordinance. He is there to convict and soften the heart. Not a look, not a
thought of contrition, escapes His notice. For the repentant,
brokenhearted one He is waiting. All things are ready for that soul’s
reception. He who washed the feet of Judas longs to wash every heart
from the stain of sin. {DA 656.3} (1898)

The Omnipresence of Christ - in a special way (1897)

Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of
the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had
been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven
Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. (KJV)

Revelation 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These
things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars;
(KJV)

Zechariah 4:10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they
shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with
those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro
through the whole earth. (KJV)

The grace of Christ was to be given to the disciples to fit them for
their work, for in their assemblies would be all classes of men, and if
they themselves were receiving grace from Christ, they could give grace
for grace. The Holy Spirit’s power would attend the appeals
made. {Ms138-1897 (December 2, 1897) par. 20}
In giving His commission to His followers, Christ did not tell them
they would be left alone. He assured them that He would be near them.
He spoke of His Omnipresence in a special way. Go to all nations, He
said. Go, to the farthest portion of the habitable globe, but know that
My presence will be there. Labor in faith and confidence, for the time
will never come when I shall forsake you. {Ms138-1897 (December 2,
1897) par. 21}
The assurance of His abiding presence was the richest legacy Christ
could give His disciples. Having the High Priest of our profession close
by our side, we need not imperil our souls by opening the secrets of our
hearts to priest or minister. In all confidence we may open our heart to
the head over all the church. {Ms138-1897 (December 2, 1897) par. 22}

Christ, the Spirit of Christ - the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth

(1890-1903)

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all
things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (KJV)

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto
you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from
the Father, he shall testify of me: (KJV)

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will
guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but
whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you
things to come. (KJV)

Christ is to be known by the blessed name of Comforter. “The

Comforter,” said Christ to His disciples, “which is the Holy Ghost,
whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things,
and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto
you, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world
giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be
afraid.” [John 14:26, 27.] {Ms7-1902 (January 26, 1902) par. 10} (1902)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms7-1902.10&para=10728.16
The Saviour is our Comforter. This I have proved Him to be. I do
not understand why I am so afflicted. At first I tried to reason out why I
did not have strength to bear my testimony to the people in this country.
But I try no longer. I have given my way and my will into the hands of
God, for He knows what is best for me. It is not the manifestation of
His great and awful majesty and unparalleled power that will leave us
without excuse if we refuse Him our love and obedience. It is the love,
the compassion, the patience, the longsuffering that He has shown
which will witness against those who do not offer Him the willing
service of their lives. Those who turn to God with heart and soul and
mind will find in Him peaceful security. {Ms20-1892 (July 16, 1892)
par. 6} (1892.07.16); {Ms34-1892 (July 16, 1892) par. 30}

The nights are long and painful, but Jesus is my Comforter and my
Hope. Today I have been able to sit up very little. {Ms20-1892 (July 23,

https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms34-1892.39&para=5439.80

If I could see you, I would have words to speak that might be more
acceptable than these traced with my pen. Christ comes as a
Comforter to all who believe. He invites your confidence. He says,
“Abide in me.” [John 15:4.] Surely we may trust in our loving Saviour.
You can say, “Yes, my Saviour; in thee I can and will trust. I will abide
in thee.” Then how trustfully you can work in His presence. Your
works will be but the fruit of Christ working in you. You may rest in
what Christ can do for you. And the energies of your soul will be
awakened to co-operate [with] Him. He will work in you to do His good
pleasure. {Lt103-1898 (November 21, 1898) par. 14} (1898.11.21)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt103-1898.14&para=6217.21
Jesus comes to you as the Spirit of truth; study the mind of the
Spirit, consult your Lord, follow His way. If you yield to the dictates of
the mind and flesh, your spirit will lose its proper character and balance,
and you fail to discern and cannot appreciate moral power. Then you
will seek to carry out the maxims of worldlings. Their voices are heard
on every side, Here is the path of success. Your mind will, if you follow
their suggestions, be deceived, carnalized, and you will esteem the
enlightenment of the Holy Spirit as less than human invention. God
calls upon you to close the door to human inventions and to open the
door to divine illumination. Be careful that you do not resist the Spirit
of God in its office work upon the temple of the soul. Be determined to
please God, to magnify His name, to enjoy the sweet influence of His
grace. {Ms8c-1891 (July 26, 1891) par. 14} (1891.07.26)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms8c-1891.14&para=6103.19

How essential that we have the enlightenment of the Spirit of God,

for thus only can we see the glory of Christ, and by beholding become
changed from character to character in and through faith in Christ. We
turn from the picture of our shortcomings to behold the atonement made
for us and we rejoice as we know that we may be clothed with Christ’s
righteousness. In Him all fulness dwells. He has grace and pardon for
every soul. As by faith we look to Jesus, our faith pierces the shadow,
and we adore God for His wondrous love in giving Jesus the
Comforter. {Ms34-1892 (July 26, 1892) par. 44} (1892.07.06)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms34-1892.44&para=5439.91

“But if the spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in
you, He that raised up Jesus from the dead shall also quicken your
mortal bodies by His spirit that dwelleth in you.” [Romans 8:11.] O
how precious are these words to every bereaved soul. Christ is our
Guide and Comforter, who comforts us in all our tribulations. When
He gives us a bitter draught to drink, He also holds a cup of blessing to
our lips. He fills the heart with submission, with joy and peace in
believing, and enables us to say submissively, “not my will, but thine, O
Lord be done. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be
the name of the Lord.” [Luke 22:42; Job 1:21.] With this submission,
hope is resurrected, and the hand of faith lays hold upon the hand of
infinite power. “He that raised up Christ from the dead, shall also
quicken your mortal bodies by His spirit that dwelleth in you.” {Lt65a-
1894 (January 1, 1894) par. 5} (1894.01.01)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt65a-1894.5&para=7061.11

The reason why the churches are weak and sickly and ready to die, is
that the enemy has brought influences of a discouraging nature to bear
upon trembling souls. He has sought to shut Jesus from their view
as the Comforter, as one who reproves, who warns, who admonishes
them, saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” {RH August 26, 1890,
par. 10} (1890)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_RH.August.26.1890.par.10&para=821.10654

Let them study the seventeenth of John, and learn how to pray and
how to live the prayer of Christ. He is the Comforter. He will abide in
their hearts, making their joy full. {Ms1-1903 (January 7, 1903) par.
13} (1903.01.07); {RH, January 27, 1903 par. 13} (1903.01.27)

https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_RH.January.27.1903.Art.A.par.13&para=821.22495

It is not essential for you to know and be able to define just what the
Holy Spirit is. Christ tells us that the Holy Spirit is the Comforter, and
the Comforter is the Holy Ghost, "the Spirit of truth, which the Father
shall send in My name." "I will pray the Father, and He shall give you
another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit
of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not,
neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you, and
shall be in you" [John 14:16, 17]. This refers to the omnipresence of the
Spirit of Christ, called the Comforter. {Lt7-1891 (June 11, 1891) par. 14}
(1891.06.11)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt7-1891.14&para=5132.20
The words spoken to the disciples come to us through their words.
The Comforter is ours as well as theirs, at all times and in all places, in
all sorrows and in all affliction, when the outlook seems dark and the
future perplexing, and we feel helpless and alone. These are times when
the Comforter will be sent in answer to the prayer of faith. {RH October
26, 1897, par. 14}
There is no comforter like Christ, so tender and so true. He is
touched with the feeling of our infirmities. His Spirit speaks to the
heart. Circumstances may separate us from our friends; the broad,
restless ocean may roll between us and them. Though their sincere
friendship may still exist, they may be unable to demonstrate it by
doing for us that which would be gratefully received. But no
circumstances, no distance, can separate us from the heavenly
Comforter. Wherever we are, wherever we may go, he is always there,
one given in Christ’s place, to act in his stead. He is always at our right
hand, to speak soothing, gentle words; to support, sustain, uphold, and
cheer. The influence of the Holy Spirit is the life of Christ in the soul.
This Spirit works in and through every one who receives Christ. Those
who know the indwelling of this Spirit reveal its fruit,—love, joy,
peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith. {RH October 26,
1897, par. 15} (1897.10.26)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_RH.October.26.1897.par.14&para=821.16322

To the poor and oppressed and downtrodden of earth, Christ says, “If

The Holy Spirit – Christ’s representative (1895-1910)

True faith and repose in God are always accompanied by the

illuminations of the Holy Spirit, whose temple we are. The Holy Spirit
is the Spirit of Christ, it is His representative. Here is the divine
agency that carries conviction to hearts. When the power of His spirit is
revealed through the servants of God, we behold divinity flashing
through humanity. When accompanied by the Holy Spirit, the
presentation of truth as it is in Jesus will be of more value than all the
honor or glory of the world. {Lt18-1895 (September 13, 1895) par. 12}

Christ has left His Holy Spirit to be His representative in the

world, to give celestial aid to every hungering, thirsting soul. Heavenly
inspiration is still imparted to men, and it is the work of those who have
had light, to let light shine forth to those who are in darkness. {Lt84-

Christ came to our world, but the world could not endure His purity.
He has gone to His Father, but He has sent His Holy Spirit to
represent Him in the world till He shall come again. This is the
message we are to bear, “Behold he cometh with clouds, and every eye
shall see him, and they also which pierced him; and all kindreds of the
earth shall wail because of him.” [Revelation 1:7.] {Ms1-1897 (January

After His ascension He was to be absent in person; but through the

Comforter He would still be with them, and they were not to spend their
time in mourning. This was what Satan wanted. He desired them to give
the world the impression that they had been deceived and disappointed;
but by faith they were to look to the sanctuary above, where Jesus was
ministering for them; they were to open their hearts to the Holy Spirit,
His representative, and to rejoice in the light of His presence. {DA

The Holy Spirit is Christ’s representative, but divested of the

was for their interest that He should go to the Father, and send the Spirit

the Saviour would be accessible to all. In this sense He would be nearer

The Holy Spirit - a representation of Christ Himself (1899)

When Christ entered within the heavenly gates, He was enthroned,

amid the songs of millions of angels. As soon as this ceremony was
completed, the Holy Spirit descended upon His followers in rich
currents according to Christ’s promise, and they were no more orphans.
How quickly Christ fulfilled His promise, and sent from the heavenly
courts the guarantee of His love! After His inauguration, the Spirit came
and Christ was indeed glorified, even with the glory which He had from
all eternity with the Father. During His humiliation upon this earth, the
Spirit had not descended with all its efficacy; and Christ declared that
if He went not away, it would not come, but that if He went away, He
would send it. It was a representation of Himself, and after He was
glorified it was manifest. {ST May 17, 1899, par. 3} (1899.05.17)

Christ is present in the person of the Holy Spirit (1881-1899)

When God’s people search the Scriptures with a desire to know what
is truth, Jesus is present in the person of His representative, the
Holy Spirit, reviving the heart of the humble and contrite ones. “If a
man love me, he will keep my words,” Christ said, “and my Father will
love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

What saith our Saviour? “I will not leave thee comfortless; I will
come unto you.” “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them,
he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my
Father; and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” When
trials overshadow the soul, remember the words of Christ, remember
that He is an unseen presence in the person of the Holy Spirit, and
He will be the peace and comfort given you, manifesting to you that He
is with you, the Sun of Righteousness, chasing away your darkness. “If
a man loves me,” Christ said, “he will keep my words, and my Father
will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with
him.” [John 14:18, 21, 23.] Be of good cheer; light will come, and your
soul will rejoice greatly in the Lord. {Lt124-1897 (March 7, 1897) par. 10}
(1897.03.07)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt124-1897.10&para=7309.16

The living fountain is to be kept before the souls who are perishing
in their sins. They must arouse. They must come to the fountain opened
in the house of David. They need the balm of the Saviour’s love applied
to their bruised and wounded souls. We must have the mighty energy of
the Holy Spirit, with all its quickening, transforming, life-giving power,
in order to penetrate the palsied soul. Work we must in spiritual lines.
Lift up Christ in His power in the person of the Holy Spirit. He is
waiting for them to open the door and admit Him. His presence will
thrill every nerve and muscle. Every organ will begin to perform its
functions, and the whole man will be restored to spiritual soundness as
he sees Christ by faith. {Lt59-1899 (March 29, 1899) par. 11}

Christ manifests Himself by the Holy Spirit (1895-1909)

When church members are fully decided to be Christian, which

work that needs to be done. It is self-esteem that leads men and women

As Jesus looked upon that vast congregation, He read the heart-
sorrow beneath the outward display of joyous exultation. He saw many
whose souls were parched as the desert, many over-wearied by
participation in the great ceremonial pointing to Himself. How He
longed to pour into the heart the current of His love. Many were almost
fainting from weariness, but that voice unlike any other, fell upon the
ear in soothing accents, “If any man thirst”—for assurance of truth, for
restful hope, for deliverance from sinful propensities—“let him come
unto Me, and drink.” He need not go to the priests or rabbis, but let him
come unto Me. “He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out
of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake He of the
Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive it; for the Holy
Ghost was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified.)” [Verses
37-39.] When He should ascend to the Father, then the Comforter
which the Saviour promised to send would come. Jesus promised to
manifest Himself through the Holy Spirit to every individual who
shall seek Him and believe on Him. {Lt97-1895 (October 8, 1895) par. 4}

The Holy Spirit never leaves unassisted a soul who is looking to

Jesus. It takes of the things of Christ, and shows them to the seeker.
And if the eye is kept fixed upon Jesus, the work of the Spirit ceases not
until the soul is conformed to His image. Through the gracious
influence of the Spirit the sinner is changed in spirit and purpose, till he
becomes one with Christ. His affection for God increases; he hungers
and thirsts for righteousness, and by beholding Christ he is changed
from glory to glory, from character to character, and becomes more and
more like his Master. Christ is formed within, and by His Spirit He
fulfils the promise, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” “The

The Lord Jesus acts through the Holy Spirit; for it is his
representative. Through it he infuses spiritual life into the soul,
quickening its energies for good, cleansing it from moral defilement,
and giving it a fitness for his kingdom. Jesus has large blessings to
bestow, rich gifts to distribute among men. He is the wonderful
Counselor, infinite in wisdom and strength; and if we will acknowledge
the power of his Spirit, and submit to be molded by it, we shall stand
complete in him. {RH August 25, 1896, par. 6} (1896.08.25); {RH

God by His Spirit is everywhere present (1903)

The greatness of God is to us incomprehensible. “The Lord’s throne

is in heaven” (Psalm 11:4); yet by His Spirit He is everywhere
present. He has an intimate knowledge of, and a personal interest in, all
the works of His hand. {Ed 132.2} (1903)

The God of heaven uses His Spirit as it pleases Him (1894-
1910)

The Holy Spirit is a free, working, independent agency. The God of

heaven uses his Spirit as it pleases him, and human minds and human
judgment and human methods can no more set boundaries to its
working, or prescribe as to the channel through which it shall operate,
than they can say to the wind, “I bid you to blow in a certain direction,
and to conduct yourself in such and such a manner.” {Lt54-1894 (June
10, 1894) par. 9} (1894.06.10); {RH May 5, 1896, par. 2}

Jesus - the only medium of communication between God and

man (1890-1900)

Thus was made known to Jacob that which met the need and longing
of his soul—a Saviour. With joy and gratitude he saw revealed a way
by which he, a sinner, could be restored to communion with God. The
mystic ladder of his dream represented Jesus, the only medium of
communication between God and man. {SC 19.2} (1892-1893)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_SC.19.2&para=108.62

Since the sin of our first parents there has been no direct
communication between God and man. The Father has given the
world into the hands of Christ, that through His mediatorial work He
may redeem man and vindicate the authority and holiness of the law of
God. All the communion between heaven and the fallen race has
been through Christ. It was the Son of God that gave to our first
parents the promise of redemption. It was He who revealed Himself to
the patriarchs. Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses
understood the gospel. They looked for salvation through man’s
Substitute and Surety. These holy men of old held communion with the
Saviour who was to come to our world in human flesh; and some of
them talked with Christ and heavenly angels face to face. {PP 366.1}

Ever since Adam’s sin, the human race had been cut off from direct
communion with God; the intercourse between heaven and earth
had been through Christ. {DA 116.2} (1898)

He is with us as we teach the words he spoke in the Old Testament

as well as in the New. He who gave commandment in the New
Testament is the one also who gave the instruction contained in the Old
Testament. The Old and New Testaments are both sacred; for they both
contain the words of Christ. All communication from heaven to earth
since Adam’s fall has come through Christ. He who believes the
instruction contained in the New Testament and in the Old, doing those
things which Christ has commanded therein, has the Saviour always
with him. {GCB July 1, 1900, Art. C, par. 3} (1900.07.01)
