Assignment 1 (Quiz 1)

1.) Octal 73 equals 00111011 in binary

2.) Binary 100000 equals 40 in octal
3.) Hexadecimal 3E6 equals 998 decimal
4.) Binary 11110 equals 1E in hexadecimal

5.) Define the Analog signal

Answer –
Analog signals are a representation of time varying quantities in a continuous signal.
Basically, a time variance is presented in a manner in which some sort of information is
passed using various types of methods. These methods can include electrical, mechanical,
hydraulic or pneumatic systems. Unlike digital signals, which use a numeric method of
transmitting information, analog signals use small fluctuations in the signal itself to pass
information.
Analog signals act essentially like simulations of a continuous time varying quantity.
They duplicate the features of the actual quantity by presenting a different quantity. In
other words, they use one method of recording information and transfer it to a different
format that, in turn, presents the information in that medium.

6.) Define the Digital signal

Answer –
It is an electronic signal transmitted as binary code that can be either the presence or
absence of current, high and low voltages or short pulses at a particular frequency. The
original information is converted into a string of bits before being transmitted. A radio
signal, for example, will be either on or off. Digital signals can be sent for long distances
and suffer less interference than analog signals. The communications industry worldwide
is in the midst of a switch to digital signals. Sound storage in a compact disk is in digital
form.

7.) List at least 10 devices that contain digital circuitry ?

Answer
MP3 players
Computers
Digital Watches
Television
DVD player
Digital Camera
Digital Camcorder
GPS systems
Cell Phones
Internet Modem

8.) List several advantages of digital over analog circuits ?

Answer -
The digital circuits are often preferred because of the ease with which their outputs can
be manipulated by computers, and because digital signals are more robust and less
subject to transmission errors.
Various other advantages of digital circuits over analog circuits are as following –
Less expensive
More reliable
Easy to manipulate
More flexible
Compatibility with other digital systems
Integrated networks
Only digest information can be transported through a noisy channel without degradation

9) Which logic gate might be called the “all or nothing gate’?

Answer
AND Gate

10) Which logic gate might be called the “ any or all gate”?
Answer –
OR Gate

11 ) Which logic circuit complements the input?

Answer –
Inverter Gate

12) Which logic gate might be called the “any but not all gate”?
Answer –
XOR Gate
