Length = L
9.50 ft
Step-1: Data

Size of Column, S1 = 10.00 in

S2 = 10.00 in
No. of Bars in Col. = 8 - Ø25mm (not so necessary)
f'c = 3,000.00 psi
= 3.00 ksi
fy = 60,000.00 psi
= 60.00 ksi
Service Load from Column = 338.00 kips (Load taken from Staadpro)
Service Load with 10% self wt. of Footing, Ws = 371.80 kips
Allowable Soil Pressure, qa = 5.00 ksf

Step-2: Footign Size

Since the space between the bottom of the footing and the surface will be occupied partly by
concrete and partly by soil (fill), an average unit weight of 125 lb/ft 3 will be assumed.

So, pressure of Soil, A1 = 110.00 pcf

Let, Top of the Footing below GL, B1 = 5.00 ft
The Soil Pressure at 5.00 ft depth, C1= A1xB1 = 550.00 psf

The net bearing pressure of the soil to carry the Colm Service Load, q net = qa - C1
= 4.450 ksf

Hence, the required footing area, Areq = Ws / q

net
= 83.55 ft2

Say, Size of the Footing, L = 9.50 ft

B = 8.79 ft
Assuming, B = 9.00 ft
Step-3: Thickness

Assuming, d = 20.50 in ( assuming sum of (L+B) in the unit of inch)

Step-4: Punching Shear Check

Factored Load from Colm, Pu = 494.00 kip (Taken from Staadpro)

Upward pressure caused by the factored load of column, qu = Pu / (LxB)
= 5.78 ksf

The footing depth in squre footings is usually determined from the two-way or punching
shear on the critical perimeter abcd. Trial calculation suggest, d = 20.50 in
(Mentioned at Step-3)
Hence the length of the Critical Perimeter, bo = 2{(S1+d)+(S2+d)}
= 122.00 in

The shear force acting on this perimeter, being equal to the upward pressure minus that acting
within the perimeter abcd, is :- Vu = qu*(L*B) - qu*((S1+d)*(S2+d)/144) kips

= qu((L*B) - (S1+d)*(S2+d)/144)) kips

= 456.68 kips

Design strength, ØVc = 4ØÖf'cbod kips

= 465.75 kips > Vu = 456.68 kips

Since ØVc > Vu, So, d = 20.50 in is adequate for punching shear.
Step-5: Beam Shear Check in the Long direction (L)

The selected value d= 20.50 in will now be checked for one-way or beam shear on section ef.
The factored shear force acting on that section is :-

VuL = qu*S3*B kips L/2-S1/2= 4.33 ft d= 20.50 in

= 136.50 kips S3 = L/2 - S1/2 - d d1 = 15.00 in
= 2.63 ft

Design strength, ØVc = 2ØÖf'cBd1 kips

= 150.84 kips > VuL = 136.50 kips

Since ØVc > VuL, So, d = 20.50 in is also adequate for Beam shear.

Step-6: Beam Shear Check in the Short direction (B)

The selected value d= 20.50 in will now be checked for one-way or beam shear on section ij.
The factored shear force acting on that section is :-

VuB = qu*S4*L kips B/2-S2/2= 4.08 ft d= 20.50 in

= 130.36 kips S4 = B/2 - S2/2 - d d1 = 15.00 in
= 2.38 ft

Design strength, ØVc = 2ØÖf'cLd1 kips

= 159.22 kips > VuB = 130.36 kips

Since ØVc > VuB, So, d = 20.50 in is also adequate for Beam shear.
Step-7: Bending Moment in the Long direction (L) or on section gh

MuL = qu*B*(L/2-S1/2)2/2 kip-ft

= 488.22 kip-ft
= 5,858.67 kip-in = 5,858,666.67 lb-in

Step-8: Bending Moment in the Short direction (B) or on section kl

MuB = qu*L*(B/2-S2/2)2/2 kip-ft

= 457.60 kip-ft
= 5,491.18 kip-in = 5,491,175.93 lb-in

Step-9: Check "d" considering Max moment

P = 0.75 Pb = 0.75x0.85x0.85x(f'c/fy)x(87000/(87000+fy))
= 0.016
Mu = ØPfybd2(1-0.59P(fy/f'c) b = Length of the short direction(B)
d= 8.790 in < 20.50 in = 108.00 in

So, d = 20.50 in
and, t = 25.00 in
Step-10: Steel requirements in the Long Direction (L)

AsL = MuL / ((Øfy(d-a/2)) Let, a= 0.85 in

= 5.404 in2 Here, b = Length of the short direction(B)
Check, a= Asfy / 0.85f'cb = 108.00 in
= 1.177 in = 0.85 in, So OK

pmin = 200 / fy = 0.003

Asmin = pmin*b*d = 7.380 in2

So, As = 7.380 in2

Reinforcement Required: -
(1) 37.00 nos. Ø12mm = Ø12mm@ 3.00 in c/c
(2) 24.00 nos. Ø16mm = Ø16mm@ 4.00 in c/c
(3) 17.00 nos. Ø20mm = Ø20mm@ 6.00 in c/c
(4) 10.00 nos. Ø25mm = Ø25mm@ 10.00 in c/c

Step-11: Steel requirements in the Short Direction (B)

AsB = MuB / ((Øfy(d-a/2)) Let, a= 0.96 in

= 5.079 2 Here, b = Length of the Long direction(L)
in
Check, a= Asfy / 0.85f'cb = 114.00 in
= 1.048 in = 0.96 in, So OK

Asmin = 0.0018bt = 5.130 in2

So, As = 5.130 in2

In the short direction that portion of the reinforcement determined by Eqn :-

Reinforcement in Bandwidth, B 2
=
Total reinforcement in the short direction ß+1

shall be uniformly distributed across a bandwidth, B centered with respect to column and having
a width equal to the length of the short side of the footing, The reminder of the reinforcement shall
be uniformly distributed in the outer portion of the footing.

ß = Ratio of the long side to the short side

= 1.06
n
Now, from the above Eq : -
Reinforcement in Bandwidth, B = 4.991 in2

Reinforcement Required within Bandwidth, B (equal to the length of the short side): -
(1) 25.00 nos. Ø12mm = Ø12mm@ 4.00 in c/c
(2) 17.00 nos. Ø16mm = Ø16mm@ 6.00 in c/c
(3) 12.00 nos. Ø20mm = Ø20mm@ 9.00 in c/c
(4) 7.00 nos. Ø25mm = Ø25mm@ 15.00 in c/c

Reinforcement Required beyond the Bandwidth, B: -

Asrem = 0.139 in2

(1) 1.00 nos. Ø12mm

(2) 1.00 nos. Ø16mm
(3) 1.00 nos. Ø20mm
(4) 1.00 nos. Ø25mm
Step-12: Development Length for footing in the long direction (L)

Max Bond Stress, u =
D

Reqd Development Length, ld =

= 11.37 in for Ø16mm P = 3.14
= 16.14 in for Ø20mm

= 28.98 in for Ø25mm

From face of column, the actual ld = (L/2 - S1/2)*12 - 3

= 49.00 in > 7.34 in for Ø12mm
= 49.00 in > 11.37 in for Ø16mm
= 49.00 in > 16.14 in for Ø20mm
= 49.00 in > 28.98 in for Ø25mm
So, bond is adequate
Step-13: Development Length for footing in the Short direction (B)

A sfy where, SO = Perimeter of Reinf.

Reqd Development Length, ld =
uSO = 2*P*r
= 7.34 in for Ø12mm = P*d
= 11.37 in for Ø16mm P = 3.14
= 16.14 in for Ø20mm

= 28.98 in for Ø25mm

From face of column, the actual ld = (B/2 - S2/2)*12 - 3

= 46.00 in > 7.34 in for Ø12mm
= 46.00 in > 11.37 in for Ø16mm
= 46.00 in > 16.14 in for Ø20mm
= 46.00 in > 28.98 in for Ø25mm
So, bond is adequate
Step-14: Development Length for Column

A sfy where, SO = Perimeter of Reinf.

Reqd Development Length, ld =
uSO = 2*P*r
= 7.34 in for Ø12mm = P*d
= 11.37 in for Ø16mm P = 3.14
= 16.14 in for Ø20mm

= 28.98 in for Ø25mm
