Antacid Marketing Pitch

Have you ever eaten too much meat lover’s pizza or drank too much orange juice and got
heartburn? Assumingly so, it bothered you so much that the first thing you did was run to your
mom’s medicine cabinet to grab the Tums? Well that very bottle you grabbed is full of a
substance America spends $10 billion on every year – an antacid. Antacids neutralizes excess
stomach acid to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. It is also used to relieve
symptoms of extra gas such a belching, bloating, and feelings of pressure or discomfort in the
stomach/gut. However, in the 1800s, the idea of an antacid was nonexistent. For this assignment,
your task is to go back into time and market the ability of one of the following modern-day
common antacid by explaining how it serves as an acid-neutralizing agent in the stomach.

Commercial Name Acid-Neutralizing Agent(s)

Alka-Seltzer NaHCO3
Milk of Magnesia Mg(OH)2
Tums CaCO3
Rolaids NaAl(OH)2CO3
Maalox Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)2
Mylanta Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)2
Amphojel Al(OH)3
Di-Gel Mg(OH)2 and CaCO3

Goal: Pick a common antacid from the list above and create a marketing presentation that
explains why it would work well as an acid-neutralizing agent.
Role: You are the chemist that is responsible for discovering your antacid in the 1800s.
Audience: Representatives of pharmaceutical companies that you want to sell your product.
Product: Marketing presentation that explains why your antacid works well as an acid-
neutralizing agent in the stomach and includes the molecular, complete ionic equation, and net
ionic equation for its reaction. Think about the most common antacid that helps your stomach
break down and digest foods.
Expectations: Construct a pitch that presents a full, high-level of mastery of the acid-base
neutralization concepts. See the attached rubric.

Score Description
4 The response achieves the following:
A score of 4 indicates a full mastery of the acid-base neutralization concepts.

Award 4 points if student presents a thorough understanding of:

1) the underlying principles of an acid-base neutralization reaction,
2) how their chosen antacid serves as an acid-base neutralizing agent in the
stomach.
3) the molecular, complete molecular ionic, and net ionic reactions for their
antacid and the most common stomach acid, hydrochloric acid, with
4) no major errors or omissions.

3 The response achieves the following:

A score of 3 indicates a proficient understanding of the gas law concepts.

Award 3 points if student presents a substantial understanding:

1) the underlying principles of an acid-base neutralization reaction,
2) how their chosen antacid serves as an acid-base neutralizing agent in the
stomach, and/ord
3) the molecular, complete molecular ionic, and net ionic reactions for their
antacid and the most common stomach acid, hydrochloric acid.

2 The response achieves the following:

A score of 2 indicates a partial/incomplete understanding of the gas law concepts.

Award 2 points if student response contains 2 of the following:

1) the underlying principles of an acid-base neutralization reaction,
2) how their chosen antacid serves as an acid-base neutralizing agent in the
stomach, and/or
3) the molecular, complete molecular ionic, and net ionic reactions for their
antacid and the most common stomach acid, hydrochloric acid.

1 The response achieves the following:

A score of 1 indicates a serious misunderstanding of the gas law concepts.

Award 1 point if student response contains 1 of the following:

1) the underlying principles of an acid-base neutralization reaction,
2) how their chosen antacid serves as an acid-base neutralizing agent in the
stomach, and/or
3) the molecular, complete molecular ionic, and net ionic reactions for their
antacid and the most common stomach acid, hydrochloric acid.

0 No understanding of the gas law concepts is shown.
