WORKSHEET # 3

Name: Jardinel, Nicole B. Date: May 11, 2020 _

Section: BA – 11 Score: ___________________________

Direction: Illustrate the equipment used in Arnis. Indicate its measurements and discuss the proper grip.

The primary weapon is the rattan stick, called a cane or baston (baton),
which varies in size, but is usually about 28 inches (71 cm) in length.

Rattan sticks are preferred by martial arts practitioners because they're

inexpensive, tough and does not splinter easily. They are usually used for
two-man drills. The sticks are hand-crafted from authentic Palasan Rattan.
The skins have been removed. They are burned to harden the sticks and
make them last longer. To prevent the sticks from going grass early, you may
wrap electrical tape around the sticks.

Dimensions:
Length: 28 inches or 71.12 centimeters.
Diameter: 1 inch or 2.54 centimeters
Weight: 160 grams per stick
Density: 0.44 grams per cubic centimeter

* All measurements are approximations since it is difficult to standardize

these sticks however pairs will be matched as closely as possible.

To have a proper grip on your Arnis stick. The first

step is to locate the intersection of your fingers and your
palm. This is the area where your palm and fingers
connect. Second, at this intersection, you should place the
Arnis stick so that the stick is perpendicular to your fingers.
Third, fold your fingers around the stick so that you can
have the maximum surface area of your fingers and
palm in contact with the stick. This will help you in having
a comfortable yet strong grip on the stick. Finally, try to
wiggle or shake the stick in your hand a little so that your
grip can adjust around the stick and be more comfortable.
With continuous practice of having a correct grip, this grip
will become instinctive.
