QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Top 5 reasons for

upgrading to the latest
version of Phast/Safeti
PRESENTERS: James Pickles, DNV GL – Digital Solutions
DATE: 4 September 2019

1. I have version 7.11 PHAST, can I specify length of pipeline by typing in a number? Previously I had
to draw on the grid to achieve the desired length.
In the long pipeline model you must still draw the pipeline on the map to the desired length. We are
looking at ways to avoid this and in the future you will see some further improvements in long
pipeline modelling.

2. In Phast 7.2 while defining a mixture component there is no need to input the toxic parameters,
whereas in Phast 8.0 the calculations are not proceeding without defining the toxic parameters for
the mixture. How does one proceed with the calcuations without specifying toxic parameters?
You are correct that in version 7.2 you can define a mixture and run calculations without having
specified toxic parameters on the mixture. However, you would not get any toxic results if the Multi-
comp. toxic calc. method field on the Toxic parameters of the Parameters tab is set to Mixture
probit and your mixture contains toxic components.

As such, a change was made (which you are seeing in version 8.0) that means users will get errors
when running a toxic mixture that doesn't have the toxic parameters on the mixture specified.

If the Multi-comp. toxic calc. method field is set to Mixture probit (the default setting), the toxic
calculations will attempt to use the toxic parameters specified for the mixture. Since your mixture
doesn't have any toxic parameters specified you will see errors (which is correct). You can either
ensure your toxic mixtures have toxic parameters specified or you can change the Multi-comp.
toxic calc. method field to Most toxic material probit or Product of each toxic material.
Please read the help for further details. This should then allow you to run your models without errors.

Please note, if your mixture is not toxic you will be able to run it without errors.

3. I need cas material 8008206

Unfortunately, kerosene is not available in the DIPPR database. We recommend either creating a
new component and specifying relevant properties (e.g. from MSDS) or use a material that has
similar properties.
4. In version 7.11, we can export the result to .csv file, which can be manipulated to extract the result
faster. Can the latest version 8.22, export the result to .csv files?
It's not clear which results are being referred to, but there are various places where results can be
exported. Consequence data can be exported to Excel, as can risk data. Diagnostic files can be
turned on, generating a range of csv files. I recommend contacting technical support for a definitive
answer.

5. Can we revert back to an older version?

This depends on your licence. If you have an SLA you can install any version. If you don't have an
SLA you will only be able to use a specific version. Please contact your local sales coordinator for
clarifications.

6. For long pipeline model, is there any plan in the future to allow liquid modelling? I understand that
we can only model gas.
The long pipeline model can be used for gas and flashing liquids. Sub-cooled liquids can't be
modelled.

7. How can we import a 3D model in PHAST?

3D CAD models can be imported in version 8.2+. The Data tab in the ribbon bar has a CAD import
option. Currently we support the following formats: .dgn, .rvm, .obj, .mcr.

8. What is the latest version of Safeti Offshore?

The latest version of Safeti Offshore is 7.6. Version 7.7 is planned to be released very soon.
Significant improvements have been made in these versions.

9. On page 21 you show a three-dimensional plant. Which software, Phast or Safeti, has the capability
to enter a 3D model?
The 3D viewer is currently available in Phast only. In a future release it will be available in Safeti, too.

10. Do you have any modification about thermodynamic model for multicomponent model?
Please contact us via technical support to clarify the question.

11. Are you going to provide results for submarine pipelines?

Our offshore software, Safeti Offshore, can model releases from subsea pipelines. Please speak to
your local sales coordinator for more information.

12. I am a Phast 8.11 user. Can you do a webinar in tasks such as importing and using maps? Plus
maybe an overview on more advanced tasks within Phast. This would be more useful than just trying
to read the tutorials and help guides.
We have added these to our list of suggestions.

13. Has version 8.22 UDM been approved for use by PHMSA? Version 6.6 and 6.7 have an approval
report, is there a report available for the new version?
Version 8.22 has not yet been approved by PHMSA. This is an item on our roadmap, and we hope to
bring some positive news in the not-too-distant future.

14. Can you use UDM 2 or 1 in version 8?

No, version 8 uses UDM3. There is an option available to turn off along wind diffusion, and depending
on the case you can get similar results to UDM2. However, it depends on the case.
15. Does it only export the list of materials used on that study, or the whole system materials?
The Export workspace option will export the system materials file, which will contain all system
materials, as well as any modifications users have made in their system materials. The study file will
contain materials that users have added to their studies.

16. For 6.7 users, what would be your recommendation for finding out the differences? For example, I'm
used to finding the graph options in a certain way in 6.7. Some of those options are not on the same
menu in version 8. Is the help option user-friendly?
We provide training courses for users wanting to get up to speed with the latest version. Technical
support are also on hand for assistance if users need certain information. On the whole, our users
have found the transition a smooth one and have benefited from the upgrade. The new interface is
sufficiently familar that any subtle differences are not difficult to grasp.

We do consider our help option to be user-friendly.

17. Can you show how the 3D result would be display without a CAD model? Can it show a distance grid?
Yes, a CAD model is not required to show the 3D plots. Yes, distance x, y and z axes can be
displayed.

18. Can you export a detailed Excel report as you can in 6.7 for dispersión and pool jet fire?
Yes you can export the dispersion and fire results like you can in 6.7. There have been some changes
in the dispersion graphs due to the improvements made with along wind diffusion. The maximum
concentration vs distance graph was added. The centreline concentration plot was replaced by
concentration at height.

19. What file formats for the geometry files can be accepted?
Currently we support the following formats: .dgn, .rvm, .obj, .mcr. We plan to expand this list in a
future release.

20. The software seems to be too heavy in memory consumption, making it very slow, which would not
be expected for software like this. It is much heavier than 6.7, which is already heavy, which makes
some people still use 6.7. Do you have plans to enhance performance?
We are working on a 64-bit version as well as actively working to enhance performance in other
areas.

21. Report formats are also slow, do you have plans to make it simpler and lighter?
We have introduced the consequence data report option to summarise this data in a tabulated format.
This is generally quicker and simpler to use than the report.

22. I'm a coder and I think I could improve time and develop APIs to enhance the usage of the software
for myself and for DNV GL, by inputing and outputing data and generating value. Do you have plans
to include an API? If not, please consider it.
We are in the process of developing APIs for Phast. A member of the product management team will
be in touch.

23. Is there a tool to export the consequence over the map for every single scenario ran? We have a
regulator requirement here in Brazil. It takes a long time to do it.
You can display the consequence data for all scenarios on the GIS one weather at a time and then
export as shape files to display in tools such as Google Earth. Once in Google Earth you could then
turn the scenarios on/off as required.
24. Do you have suggestions for establishing different time of valve closure for scenarios within vessels?
For instance, if you create different size leaks within one equipment, which close in different timings
given the detection time, the maximum inventory will be the same for all.
In this instance you would need to create the scenarios under separate vessels.

25. Any plans for considering liquid modelling for pipeline, or is the route model the best use still?
The long pipeline model can be used for gas and flashing liquids. Sub-cooled liquids can't be
modelled.

26. Is there the possibility to include Domino models into Phast Risk to enhance its strength to model
Domino cases?
Domino/escalation is extremely difficult to model due to the many ways in which a scenario might
escalate. One area we are looking at is to enhance the reports (or create a domino report) which for
each scenario gives the likelihood of the effects of the scenario impacting other equipment in the
study.

27. Can you please advise the min. pipe diameter handling flammable HC that I need to consider when
modelling a large gas refinery?
All pipe diameters should be considered. You might be advised to do some simple consequence
modelling up front for the range of diameters and pressures to determine whether the consequence
distances are negligible, and if so, neglect them from further modelling.

28. I think in the US, many still use v6.7 because of Phmsa approval. Is there any word on Phmsa
approval for v8x?
PHMSA approval for the latest versions is on our roadmap.

29. Objects drawn in Phast were shown to generate a thermal shadow for flux, however, do these
objects have any effect if they are within the flame impingement area?
No, the radiation shielding objects affect only the flux. If the flame is sufficient to reach a radiation
shielding object then it effectively ignores the object and you will not see any impact on thermal
radiation.
