Introduction
What is cutting classes? Why some are students always doing it? Are there any
consequences to it? How can we prevent students from cutting? Those are the
questions commonly asked by worrying parents and teachers because, they can’t
keep track of the students when they do this and it would usually lead them to
worry. We hope that this research would help answer all of them and put you in a
perspective to better understand the topic.
Cutting classes simply means intentionally not attending a required class in one's
formal education without a valid excuse. In the Philippines, according to
Department of Education (2009) cutting of classes become a rampant problem in
public schools in the Philippines. Public schools in the Philippines where there is
inefficient security and a relatively high number of students thus making it hard to
monitor each student. The alarming growth of students is one of the reasons why
it’s too hard to monitor the students in schools. The Cebu Provincial Board have
approved on third and final reading an ordinance that prohibits students from
skipping classes (Silva,2014). According to Cristoria and Isles (2014), “Violators
would undergo counseling on the first offense, then made to render up to 36
hours of community service on the second offense. A third offense would draw a
fine of less than P500”. This proves that the said issue is serious. Cutting of class
has become a gateway to a terrible future.
The reason that some students often seem to cut on classes is because students
are bored of school, some are stressed out, and others use it as a way to prevent
doing more work. These students would increasingly keep on cutting classes every
time they do it, and they would eventually just stop coming to school. This has
increased in the past few years. According to Viola (2016), every time a student
cuts class, it’s inevitable that they are also cutting their education. It is said that
going to school is like a having a job, they are mostly alike in such reason that you
get paid with knowledge. Infact, being always present in class and getting to
school on time are two of the crucial determining factors of a student’s success,
not just as a student but as a person who will be managing his/her own life in the
future. Failing grades and poor academic performance may also be the result
cutting of classes and it would be worst if it will not be prevented.
Cutting of classes do not only affect the grades and academic performance of a
student, but it also affects their parents. Parents were the ones who had earned
money they allot for their children's educations is deliberately wasted by the
child, teachers are also affected by the student’s performance, if it is found out
that they lost a student during class hours, they will be reprimanded, or worse
filed a case against them. Therefore, in this study, the researchers want to
understand that attending class is vital for a good education and a good future.
Attendance of students in class serves a predictor to their success. A student's
time in class not only affects themselves in the present, but also their families and
teachers. But most importantly, attending class has a very high impact on a
student's future and on his/her academic performance.
Students nowadays tend to lose their IDs because they can't handle their
belongings very well. Having a ID is important as a student because this holds
your information like your parent mobile number, where do you live and also
your complete name. IDs helps students in a sense that it serves as a way to
contact your guardians in times of emergencies. Students should always wear it in
school and also outside in the premises in terms of safety.
Also, sometimes teachers untentionally forgot to check the attendance or running
out of time to check in a certain day. And the secretary is sick of checking the
attendance or she is just busy doing projects. Some people thinks that checking
the attendance is not important which is wrong, checking attendance is important
because this gives the teacher a attention if a one student is always absent or
present. Also, one reason why the grades of the student is low or suddenly the
grades drop. The teacher has a proof if the parent of the student complaint that
her/his grades are low and that because of being absent in the class.
Research Design
The respondents of the study were the students of the Calbayog City
National High school specifically the Science Curriculum Program-Science
Technology and Engineering (SCP-STE) students. The 79 students of SCP-STE
Curriculum are the ___% of the ___ of total number of enrolled students in SCP-
STE. And also, the pupils of Calbayog City Sped Center specifically the Grade 2
pupils. ________________
Sampling Procedure
This study utilized the convenient and purposive sampling procedure where
students ages seven (7) to sixteen (16) years old and _______________________
as the sample. It is considered as convenient because the researchers
respondents where available in there locality specifically in the school of the
researchers and Calbayog City Sped Center. It is purposive in a way that the
respondents were chosen personally by the researchers that have qualified on the
criteria that they have set.
