Title: “Microencapsulation of essential oils and fragrances: Study on perfumed and mosquito-
repellent textiles”

Objective:

 Explore different possibilities of microencapsulated essential oil on textile substrates to

achieve aromatherapy textiles.
 To study applications of fragrance textiles and mosquito repellent textiles.
 To study durability of perfumed textiles with series of washing cycles.

Background:

Microencapsulation is a process by which very tiny droplets or particles of liquid or solid material
are surrounded or coated with a continuous film of polymeric material, yielding capsules ranging
from less than one micron to several hundred microns in size. It is mean of applying thin coating to
small particle of solid or droplet of liquid & dispersion. By using microencapsulation of essential
oils in herbal products which have, fragrance and mosquito repellent capabilities can be utilize for
made fragranced textiles and mosquito repellent textiles.

Textiles treat with microencapsulated slow release essential oil compounds is used for
aromatherapy. For this character it is very important to long lasting nature of slow releasing of
active compound from microcapsule.

Applications

In cosmetic textiles, the major interest in microencapsulation is currently in the application of

perfumes, mosquito repellent chemicals, essential oils, skin moisturizing agents, skin cooling
agents, anti-aging agents etc.

Advantages

Microencapsulation technology is an effective technique to achieve satisfactory performance for

aromatherapy and controlled release of essential oils is expected to be appreciated by consumers.

The integration of aromatherapy in textile application is a unique and user-friendly idea that enables
an alternative way for essential substance delivery systems for mosquito repellant and perfumed
textiles.

Disadvantages
The technique used called microencapsulation is relatively expensive when compared to
conventional methods. And there may be cross reaction between core material and wall material of
microencapsules.
