WHAT HAS BEEN LOST or COMPROMISED AT NEST+m

 Our identity as a comprehensive, K-12 college preparatory public school, not just a science
and technology school.
 Meaningful morning Advisory in the Middle and Upper School.
 With the loss of Advisory comes the loss of the NEST+m student’s voice and the time to
maintain Model UN, Student Government, National Honor Society, Peer Leadership and
other student programs.
 Morning meeting in the Lower School, the precursor to Advisory, is reduced.
 Discipline and adherence to the NEST+m Code of Conduct in the Middle School and Upper
School.
 Faculty morale - our fifty teachers have filed over thirty United Federation of Teachers
(UFT) grievances, with more pending.
 Electives and Languages in Middle and Upper School.
 Dress code in the Upper School.
 Arts education is reduced, school wide.
 The NEST+m policy of allocating money for instruction over administration. This year’s
planned school budget was revised on October 18th to include an increased administrative
salary line increased of over 80%, up from $202,000 to $362,000.
- Per session money paid to teachers to conduct clubs and after school classes, before
and after school tutoring,
professional development and other enrichment cut from $216,000 to $73,000.
- Classrooms are without books as the book budget was cut from $140,000 to $73,000.
- Educational consultant budget which paid for staff development and guest lecturers cut
from $37,000 to $5,000.
 Gender split math and science classes in the Middle and Upper Schools.
 No accountability for broken rules and unclear consequences.
 Music and dance reduced or eliminated, schoolwide.
 Upper School Masterworks Program of independent study eliminated.
 Promised and pre-registered AP classes eliminated.
 The staff has been instructed to end IEP referrals and only give students-in-need eight
weeks of “at risk” services.
 NEST+m is an exempt school that does not adhere to mandated DOE curriculum - yet the
Middle School science curriculum is changed to Project Based Inquiry Science (PBIS), a city
mandated science curriculum not used at Lab, Anderson and other gifted schools.
 Snack and recess for Lower School is reduced - essential breaks for every child.
 Small class size, K-12.
 PTA access to the building for fundraising events – newly imposed usage costs negate
potential fundraising profits and benefits.
 Parent alert letters eliminated for all grades; with the loss of parent alert letters comes the
abdication of parental accountability.
 Orderly and safe arrivals and departures.
 Our regular school day is illegally extended to 3:05 in violation of the UFT contract.
 School spirit and morale among teachers, students and parents.
 Our family-style, first name basis between students, staff and parents.
 No Crossing Guard.
 No School Nurse.
