Answer any THREE questions. All questions carry equal
marks. 3 x 16 = 48 M
2. a) Differentiate between Hole basis System and Shaft basis
System of fits. 6M
b) A hole and mating shaft are to have a nominal assembly
size of 40 mm. The assembly is to have a maximum clearance of 0.15 mm and a minimum clearance of 0.05 mm. The hole tolerance is 1.5 times the shaft tolerance. Determine the limits for both hole and shaft by using 10 M (i) hole basis and (ii) shaft basis system
3. a) Enumerate the desirable characteristics of precision
measuring instruments. Explain any two precision instruments in detail with the help of neat sketch. 8M
b) Design a general purpose GO and NO-GO plug gauge
for inspecting a hole of 25 D8, with the following information: 25 mm diameter lies in the diameter step of 18 and 30 mm and the fundamental deviation for ‘D ’ hole is given by (16D0.44). IT8 grade is 25 I. 8M
4. a) Explain the working mechanism of NPL flatness
interferometer. 8M Page 2 of 3 b) Explain the working principle of Auto collimator. State its advantages and disadvantages. 8M
5. a) Explain three wire method for measuring effective
diameter of a screw thread. 8M
b) State the various sources of errors in manufacturing
gears. Explain various types of errors in gears. 8M
6. a) Explain the construction and working principle of Solex
Pneumatic Comparator with a neat sketch. 8M
b) Describe how to check the flatness of the clamping
surface of table in the alignment test on a drilling machine. 8M
