Course Overview
Through our course we will gain intensive Knowledge in the mentioned topics

Drill String Design:

Day 1

 Introduction - pre-class test

 Mechanical Properties of Steel & Basic Concepts- Strength & Deformation
 Hook’s Law - Minimum Yield Stress - Maximum Yield Stress
 Buoyancy - Axial Forces and Buckling in Submerged Tubulars
 On the first day participants will have an overview of the learning objectives during the
course. The day will continue on to discuss topics such as the properties of steel, Hooke's Law,
and Thermal Stress. Participants will gain knowledge about axial forces and buckling in
submerged tubulars, ending with a practical exercise.

Day 2

 Drill Stem Design, Drill Pipe Specifications and Connections

 Drill pipe Specs - Steel Grade – Tool Joints – Make-up Torque – Drill pipe Classification – Drill
pipe Marking
 Drill string Tension Design based on Margin of Over pull and SCF
 Collapse, Burst and Torsion Design
 Participants will have a detail analysis of the complete manufacture of Drill Pipe process will be
reviewed including connections and make up torque. During the day multiple exercises will
complement the theory part.

Day 3

 Bottom Hole Assembly and Drill string Dynamics

 Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) Selection and Design – Drill Collar and Heavy Weight Drill Pipe
(HWDP) Specifications and properties – BHA Design Process
 Bending Strength Ratio – Stiffness Ratio – Stress Relief Features
 BHA Design for Directional Drilling Applications
 BHA components, properties, design factors and limitation including a BHA applicability in
directional wells, stabilization principles and effects of stiffness, formation Dip, hole washout
and WOB. The day will end with a review of drill string dynamics.

Day 4

 Drill String Care and Inspection

 Drill String Failures and Prevention – Group 1 and Group 2 DS Failures
 Drill String Failure Prevention – Drill String Care and Inspection
 In the final day participants will learn about types of damage which may occur during
operations and handling. Detail review of tables, curves and technical data of DS-1 will be
followed by fatigue design, overload cases and class exercises.
Directional drilling an planning:
Day 1

 Directional Drilling Fundamentals and Terminology

 Fundamentals, applications, and limitations
 Terminology, well objectives, and target issues
 Well planning: positioning and coordinate systems
 Day one will focus on directional drilling fundamentals and terminology. Participants will learn
about the fundamentals, applications, and limitations of directional drilling. The day will
continue with a discussion over terminology, well objectives, and target issues. A discussion on
well planning will close out the day, paying special attention to positioning and coordinating
systems.
