Can I convert my hydraulic control valve to single acting by simply plugging one
of the work ports?
While this will work, it will also result in a lot of heat build up within the hydraulic
system because oil will go over the relief valve in one of the spool positions. The
best solution is to either replace the valve or change to a single acting spool
provided the design of the valve will allow it.
What is the advantage of using a control valve with a motor spool?
The motor spool connects both work ports back to tank when the valve is in the
neutral position. This allows hydraulic motors that are turning components with a lot
Control of inertia, such as large pulleys or sprockets to freewheel to a stop when the valve is
shifted to neutral. Without the motor spool the work ports would be blocked in
Valve neutral causing the motor to stop immediately. This could generate a very high
FAQs pressure spike and damage components in the hydraulic system.
What information do I need to decide which hydraulic control valve
is right for my system?
There are a number of important specifications you should know to aide in
the selection of a control valve.
1- Open or closed center 3- Maximum flow
2- Maximum pressure 4- Single acting, double acting or motor spool
While this is not a complete list of possible options it would provide enough
information to select the proper valve for most applications..

What is the difference between a pressure compensated flow control and

priority flow control?
TECH A pressure compensated flow control will deliver the same controlled flow
regardless of pressure as long as the inlet flow remains constant. If the inlet flow
TIP is increased or decreased the controlled flow will also vary accordingly. A priority
flow control will deliver the same controlled flow regardless of changes to the
inlet flow or pressure as long as the inlet flow exceeds controlled flow demand.

TECH Twisting a hydraulic hose during installation can lead to its premature failure.
Installing a hose that flex's, and has as little as a 7 degree twist, can reduce
service life by as much as 90%. Also, twisted hydraulic hoses that are under
TIPS pressure have a greater chance of their fittings coming loose.

I will be setting up a hydraulic system and need to determine what size

reservoir I should use?
TECH A good rule of thumb to use when selecting a reservoir is 2 to 1. This means if
your pump output is 10 GPM the reservoir should hold approximately 20
TIPS gallons. Some other factors that may have an influence on this ratio are the
systems duty cycle, operating temperature and environment.
