Theme
Geosciences can and must contribute in
solving the basic problems of mankind in the coming
decade for sustainable development. The idea of
“Sustainable Development” was evolved from the
rapid depletion of non-renewable resources and the
need to utilize them in an optimum way to conserve
the environment for future generations. This also gave
an impetus to initiate several geo-scientific studies in
the country addressing various issues such as water,
energy, soils, urbanization, disaster reduction,
education and research. In order to achieve this, an
integration of geosciences into the broad scope of the
national sustainable development programs is
necessary. This requires development of world-class
institutions for fundamental as well as applied
geosciences research in the country.
The results of scientific, technical studies
and surveys should be systematically documented to
obtain the status of geo-scientific knowledge in the
country. From this base level, the country should
develop and continually enhance core competence in
survey, mapping and information storage and retrieval
of geo-scientific information. Utilizing these, geo-
scientific community can provide expert advice and
help in decision-making to the policy makers for
sustainable socio-economic development. The
proposed conference is therefore aimed at deliberating
the current involvement of earth scientists in the
above issues followed by a prognosis on how such
involvement may develop strategies for future
development keeping in view the socio-economic
development in a systematic and sustainable manner.

comprising minerals, oil, gas and water
resources
• Geo-informatics and data management
• Geo-scientific Investigations such as
natural hazards, climate change
• Capacity building in academic and

• Role of Geo-science in urban planning
and management
Call for papers
Participants wishing to present papers are
requested to send the abstracts to the Co-Convener, on or
before 1 February, 2011. The abstract shall include full
address, email id, phone/ mobile number of
corresponding author along with registration form.
Department of Geophysics
Established in the year 1949, the Department
of Geophysics has been active all through since its
inception both in teaching and research. Three courses,
namely, M. Sc. (Tech.) course in Geophysics, M. Sc
course in Marine Geophysics and M. Sc course in
Hydrology are being conducted. The areas of research
have been potential fields, both on land and marine
environments, seismological studies in relation to crustal
studies, satellite gravity modeling, remote sensing and
hydrological studies etc. Recognizing the contribution To

About Visakhapatnam
Visakhapatnam (17° 43’N, 83° 23’ E), known as the
“City of Destiny”, lies on the east coast of India with many
delightful places for visitors. The climate in December is very
pleasant with a temperature of 16 - 18° C. This city is almost
sandwiched between Bay of Bengal on one side and Eastern
Ghats on the other. All along the beach road, stretching for
about 10 km, many beaches invite the visitors to exhibit their
serenity. The city has many tourist attractions and holy places
for religious minded and is well connected by air, rail and road
with all major cities in India.
Registration and Accommodation
Aspiring delegates who require accommodation will
have to register sufficiently in advance in the proforma enclosed
overleaf. Registration fees must accompany all registration

Student delegates will be accommodated in University hostels,
