Section I: Read the text carefully and then answer the following questions choosing the
correct option (A, B, C, D)

Transportation in Mozambique

Transport networks are of major importance to the economy. Mozambique’s landlocked

neighbours – Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland – are the main users of the
Mozambican transport system. South Africa is not land-locked but it also makes use of
Mozambique’s transport system.
The railways are the best-developed sector, with three good rail links between major
Mozambican ports and neighbouring countries. By the time the country got independence,
almost the entire railway system was owned by the state and passed into the hands of the new
government. The route system is 3,131 km long; the single largest user is Southern Africa.

Section II - Used to + infinitive

The structure used to + infinitive is used to refer to a past routine or situation which no longer
exists at the present time.
It refers to past habits and states that do not exist today; something that you did regularly in the
past but you don’t do now. ‘Used to + infinitive’ can only refer to a past time.
Ex:
1. I used to smoke. – There was a period in my past where I smoked regularly but I do not smoke now.
2. I did not use to smoke. – I smoke now but there was a period in my life when I did not smoke .

Here are more examples:

3. Sarah used to drink coffee. Now she prefers tea.
4. Pierre used to fly from Paris to London. Now he takes the train.
5. I used to drive to work but now I walk. It’s healthier.
6. I used to work in an office. Now I go out to meet my clients.

The interrogative form of 'used to' is : Did + Subject + 'use to' + verbal base
Ex:
1. Did you use to live in London?

Exercise - 2
Make an affirmative sentence, negative sentence or question using ‘used to + infinitive’:
1. I / live in a flat when I was a child. _______________________________________________
2. We / go to the beach every summer? ______________________________________________
3. She / love eating chocolate, but now she hates it. ____________________________________
4. He / not / smoke. _____________________________________________________________
5. I / play tennis when I was at school. ______________________________________________
6. She / be able to speak French, but she has forgotten it all. _____________________________
7. He / play golf every weekend? ___________________________________________________
8. They both / have short hair. _____________________________________________________
9. Julie / study Portuguese. _______________________________________________________
10. I / not / hate school. __________________________________________________________

Section III - Countable and uncountable nouns

Countable and uncountable nouns
It's important to distinguish between countable and uncountable nouns in English because their
usage is different in regards to both determiners and verbs.

● Countable nouns
Countable nouns are for things we can count using numbers. They have a singular and a plural
form. The singular form can use the determiner "a" or "an". If you want to ask about the quantity
of a countable noun, you ask "How many?" combined with the plural countable noun.
Examples
1. She has three dogs.
2. I own a house.
3. I would like two books please.
4. How many friends do you have?

● Uncountable nouns
Uncountable nouns are for the things that we cannot count with numbers. They may be the
names for abstract ideas or qualities or for physical objects that are too small or too amorphous
to be counted (liquids, powders, gases, etc.). Uncountable nouns are used with a singular verb.
They usually do not have a plural form.
We use some with uncountable nouns in positive sentences and any with negatives.
1. There's some milk in the fridge.
2. There isn't any coffee.

Exercise - 3
Decide whether these nouns are countable (C) or uncountable (U)
1. The children are playing in the garden. ______
2. I don't like milk. _________
3. I prefer tea. __________
4. Scientists say that the environment is threatened by pollution. __________
5. My mother uses butter to prepare cakes. ___________
6. There are a lot of windows in our classroom. ___________
7. We need some glue to fix this vase. ___________
8. The waiters in this restaurant are very professional. _____________
9. My father drinks two big glasses of water every morning. ____________
10. The bread my mother prepares is delicious. ____________

Section IV - Quantifiers
A quantifier is a word or phrase which is used before a noun to indicate the amount or quantity:
'Some', 'many', 'a lot of' and 'a few' are examples of quantifiers.

● Much, many, a lot (of)

We use many, much, a lot (of) to refer to big quantities. We use ‘many’ with countable nouns
and ‘much’ with uncountable nouns, and we can use ‘a lot (of)’ with both countable and
uncountable nouns. In modern English it is very common to use ‘a lot (of)’ in affirmative
sentences instead of ‘many’ and ‘much’.

● A few, a little, a bit (of)

To talk about small quantities we can use ‘a few’ and ‘a little’.
We use ‘a few’ with countable nouns and ‘a little’ with uncountable nouns.
It’s also possible to use ‘a bit’ with uncountable nouns, but it is more informal.

● Some, any
When we want to refer to a plural noun or an uncountable noun, without giving a specific
quantity, we use ‘some’ and ‘any’. We use ‘some’ in affirmatives and ‘any’ in questions and
negatives. As is common in English, there is an exception to this rule. When we make requests
and offers, we usually use ‘some’ instead of ‘any’.

● Enough, plenty (of)

The words ‘enough’ and ‘plenty’ express the idea of being a sufficient quantity. Both words can
go with countable and uncountable nouns. We use ‘plenty (of)’ to mean there is more than a
sufficient quantity of something. And we use ‘enough’ to express the idea of having, or not
having, a sufficient quantity

Exercise - 4
Complete the sentences using the words in brackets.
1. There are __________ things to do today. (many/much)
2. We have ________time left, don’t worry. (many/a lot of)
3. Would you like _________ milk in your coffee? (a little/a few)
