importance of Statistics, data collection/gathering and the different forms
of data representation, measures of central tendency, measures of
variability, and probability.

B. Performance Standard: The learner is able to collect and organize data systematically and
compute accurately measures of central tendency and variability and apply
these appropriately in data analysis and interpretation in different fields.

IV. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Reviewing Previous Lesson
Last time, we discussed the frequency table and
histogram. Can you still remember what is frequency
table?
Yes, Ma’am.
Can you define it, Michael?
Ma’am, frequency table is a table that lists items and
and uses tally marks to record and show the number of
times data values occur.
Very well said, Michael! How about histogram? Can
you define it Kristine?
Ma’am, it is a vertical bar graph of a frequency
distribution of data values grouped into intervals.
Very good class! It seems that you really understood
our last lesson.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson

Now, before we proceed to our new lesson let’s have
an activity. But first, let me group you into three. This
side will be the group one, this one will be the group
two, and the rest will be the group three. I will give
each group an envelope. Inside it, there are pieces of
puzzle which you will assemble for you to answer the
riddles you’ve formed. The fastest team that will be
able to post the assembled riddle and have a correct
answer will receive a price. You will do it in three
minutes.
Is it clear to everyone?
Yes, Ma’am.
(Riddles about average)

Ok class, we have a winner. Let’s give them a round

of applause.

C. Presenting Examples/Instances
Please read everyone what you have just formed out
of the puzzle. (The students will read the riddle.)
What is the answer?
“Average”
Very good.
Your answer in the riddle has something similar to our
topic for today. But before we proceed to our
discussion, let’s have another activity. Stay with your
group, class. This activity is entitled, “Remember My
Password”. I will post a statement on the board and
give you a worksheet. For you to come up a password
of Harry Peter’s iphone, you must to solve the
numbers written on the table. Every correct answer is
the number of letter in Alphabet. After that, write the
letter on the table.
The group who finished first to solve the numbers and
got a password have a price.
Are my instructions clear class?
If that’s so, let’s get started. Yes, Ma’am.
Harry Peter wants to take a picture together
with Vanessa using his new iphone.
Unfortunately, he forgets the password that he
put in his screen lock. He wants your help to
open his phone by solving the problems on a
worksheet.

Time is up! Congratulations to the winning group.

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New

Skills #1

This will exercise you on how familiar you are in our

topic for today. I’ve notice that the number we add together is the
So, what have you notice on the numbers you add and number that we divide of.
you divide, Geline?
That’s correct.

If that’s so, what do you call the answer you’ve got

after you divide the total of the numbers by the
numbers were added together?
Yes, Clark?
Average, Ma’am.
You are correct!

But when we are talking about measure of central

tendency, it is commonly known as what?

Yes, Vanessa?
Mean
Awesome!
Now, based your answer in our activity a while ago,
how will you define the mean or the average?

Yes, Ellanie?
It is the total values divided by the number of items or
Very well said, Ellanie! sets.

Alright! Mean or also known as Arithmetic mean, is

the most commonly used measure of central tendency.
It is the sum of measures X divided by the number N
of measures in a variable. It is denoted as X́ .

To find the mean of an ungrouped data, use the

formula,

∑X
X́ =
N

Where:
X́ = Sample mean
X = Value of each item
N = number of items in the sample
∑= “the sum of”

Is it class?

E. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New

Skills #2 Yes, Ma’am.

Consider this example:

Find the simple mean (or average) of the following

numbers.
8, 7, 8, 7, 9, 5, 8, 5, 7, 6

X́ = 8+ 7+ 8+ 7+ 9+ 5+ 8+ 5+ 7+ 6
70
X́ =
10
X́ = 7

Therefore, the mean is 7.

Are you following, class?

Let’s have another example:

The grades in Geometry of 10 students are 87, 84, 85, Yes, Ma’am.
85, 86, 90, 79, 82, 78, and 76.
What is the mean grade of 10 students?

Lyka, write the following grades on the board and add

it.

Next, Aljon divide the total grade by the number of

students. (Lyka will write the following grades and she add it.)
Alright! Hence, the mean grade of the 10 students is (Aljon will divide the total grade by the number of
83.2. students.)
Aljon, got 83.2
Now, it’s your turn. Try to solve this.

Find the average grade of each of two students whose

grades in five subjects are as follows.

Student A = 85, 90, 95, 83, 82

Student B = 79, 88, 95, 94, 89

Try to solve on the board the grades of student A,

Camille.

For student B, Marcos?

Student A = 85+ 90+ 95+ 83+ 82
435
=
5
Excellent! = 87

Now, how did you get the average grade? Student B = 79+ 88+ 95+ 94+ 89
Yes, Vanessa? 445
=
5
Very well said, Vanessa. = 89

Now class, do you have any question about computing We get the average grade by adding the grades of each
mean? students and divide by the number of items or subjects.

F. Developing Mastery
Since you have no questions, I think you are now None, Ma’am.
ready for our next activity. But before that, back to
your group, class. Our activity is entitled, “Solve Me
As Fast As You Can!” What you are going to do is
solve the problem that I will flash on the screen. I will
give you a piece of an illustration board for you to
write your answer on it. Just raise your answer as fast
as you can. The group which accumulate the highest
number of points will receive a prize.
Is it clear, class?
Let us start.

Problem #1
Yes, Ma’am.

calculate the mean of 9, 4, 5, 17, 6, 7, 9, 10,
11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 9 and 24?
