Finals Q1 NEE 525 - _____
Problem Solving. Use your bond paper and place your final answer inside a box with appropriate units. Use up to three decimal points. Write your
answer clearly. Show your COMPLETE solution.

1. (5 pts) Given: 3-phase delta-connected, 2,500-volt, 60-cycle generator, with 8 poles, 2 slots per pole per phase, a sine wave emf, and a flux per
pole of 4,500,000 maxwells. Calculate the number of inductors per slot.

2. (5 pts) Given a three-phase transformer: the number of primary turns = 1,800; frequency = 60; flux in core = 1,600,000 maxwells. Calculate the
full-load current in the secondary (low-pressure) winding when the output is 10 kVa, the ratio of transformation being 20 to 1.

3. (10 pts) An alternator runs at a peripheral speed of 10,000 fpm and it has 6 poles. The speed is 1200 rpm. Calculate the frequency and pole pitch

4. (5 pts) Given: flux per pole = 3,000,000 maxwells; sine-wave flux distribution; pole pitch = 10 in.; length of armature core (gross) = 8 ¾ in.; length
of armature core (net) = 7 ½ in.; tooth pitch = 2 in.; tooth width (average) = 1 in. Calculate the maximum value of the apparent flux density in the
teeth.

5. (5 pts) Given a 3-phase, delta-connected 2,200-volt generator, with an armature diameter of 4 ft and specific loading of 400 amp-conductors per
inch of armature periphery, delivering 100 kW on 70 percent power factor. Calculate the amperes per phase in the armature winding.

6. (10 pts) Given that 1/2 gal of water per minute passing through cooling pipes in a transformer tank is required for every kilowatt of heat loss,
and that 1 sq. in of pipe surface must be provided for every watt passing through the cooling coil from the heated oil to the water. Calculate
a. the length of 1-in copper tube required to construct a cooling coil to dissipate 3 ½ kW,
b. the velocity of the water in the pipe. (7 ½ gal = 1 cu ft)

7. (5 pts) Given that the full-load copper losses are exactly twice the iron losses in a 75 kVa transformer, and that the quarter-load efficiency is 96.5
per cent. Calculate the half-load efficiency at 0.85 power factor.

8. (5 pts) In a transformer having a 15 to 1 ratio, the copper losses in the primary are 20 per cent less than in the secondary. The resistance per
turn of the primary is 0.0059 ohm, and there are 1,485 more turns in the primary than in the secondary. Calculate the secondary winding resistance.

9. (10 pts) The primary winding of a transformer connected to a 2,200-volt circuit consists of two coils which may be connected in series or parallel.
When they are in series, with secondary circuit open, the primary current is 0.32 amp and the power input is 150 watts. Calculate the no-load
current and power factor when the primary coils are connected in parallel on a 1,000-volt circuit of the same frequency.

10. (5 pts) Given: flux per slot pitch at center of pole = 650,000 maxwells; slot-pitch = 1.25-in; axial length of armature core (gross) = 10 in.; ampere-
turns required to overcome reluctance of air-gap at center of pole = 10,000. Calculate the average permeance per square centimeter of the air gap
under center of pole.

11. (5 pts) Calculate the percentage regulation on a load of unity power factor of a transformer having 3.5 per cent resistance drop and 14 per cent
reactive drop.

12. (5 pts) Given a 30-kVa transformer with core loss = 300 watts, the copper loss at quarter load = 85 watts. Calculate the all-day efficiency on a
6-hr basis. (i.e. 6-hr full-load, 18-hr no-load)

13. From the given circuit, the CTs has 1500:5 class C200 specification. The peak-load current is a balanced 1500 A per phase.
a. (5 pts) Determine the rated burden impedance.
b. (20 pts) If the circuit has an A phase to ground fault on the line, with fault current magnitude of 16000 A. Find the phase and residual relay
currents. Assume that the C phase current is at 0°. Use ACB sequence

14. (15 pts) A current transformer has a maximum load current of 1850 A and maximum fault current of 20,500 A. The total burden impedance is
6.2 Ω. A 2000:5 class C200 multiratio CT is present. The available CT taps are 300, 400, 500, 800, 1100, 1200, 1500, 1600 and 2000. (These taps
represent the primary current rating, with the secondary current rating being 5 A for all tap selections). Determine the proper taps that shall be
used.
