Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff:

On January 7, 2011, Magnet Schools of America released its final report of the review it conducted
of HISD’s magnet program. The report includes a number of findings and recommendations regarding
HISD’s 113 magnet schools. However, it is important to note that, at this time, no decisions have
been made and no actions have been taken with respect to these recommendations.

Magnet Schools of America will present its findings to the Board of Education on January 10, 2011.
A series of community meetings will be held during the last week of January and the first week of
February for the public to provide input on the report. Specific dates and locations of the meetings will
be forthcoming. The Board will consider the recommendations and staff and community feedback
and will take action at its March 10, 2011, meeting.

The magnet review falls under the district’s Strategic Direction core initiative of maintaining rigorous
instructional standards and supports. In 2006, a peer review of the magnet program was completed;
however, no action was taken and concerns about inconsistencies in funding and program implementa-
tion continued to be raised. The Board of Education requested the independent external review by
Magnet Schools of America to address these issues and to ensure that HISD’s magnet program is
effective, fair, and efficient. In alignment with the district’s beliefs and visions, HISD is committed
to offering families quality choice in all schools in a fiscally responsive manner.

Please note that the magnet application process that has been used in the past will continue to be in
effect for 2011–2012. The January 7 magnet application deadline is unchanged, notifications will be
mailed March 25, and final decisions will be due April 8.

Magnet Schools of America presentará su informe a la Mesa
Directiva el 10 de enero de 2011. Se ha programado una serie

Vui loøng löu yù raèng thuû tuïc noäp ñôn xin vaøo chöông trình
magnet töøng ñöôïc söû duïng trong quaù khöù cuõng seõ tieáp tuïc coù
hieäu löïc cho nieân khoaù 2011–2012. Haïn choùt noäp ñôn laø 7
thaùng Gieâng thì khoâng thay ñoåi, caùc thoâng baùo seõ ñöôïc göûi ñi
vaøo ngaøy 25 thaùng Ba, vaø quyeát ñònh sau cuøng seõ laø 8 thaùng Tö.
