Nobody mobs them, of tears their clothes, But Led Zeppelin are still the most Successful rock band of all time Bigger than the Beatles, Bigger than the Rolling Stones. And far bigger than pop acts like the Osmonds and the Bay City Rollers, Zep. as they are known (0 their fans, also happen to be the best rock band in the world Tn a five concert season at Earls Cour Zep played to a total of 85,000 people, Every ticket was sold within six hours of the ‘box-office opening. Compare that with the Osmonds. They played two nights at Earls Court and neither Concert sold out in advance. ‘The Bay City Rollers are not yet as well established as they Will be Within @ yeae but by comparison their London ticket sales were modest They played three shows at London's Hammersmith Odeon, which has a capacity of 3.400, There was insufficient demand for iiekets to consider a fourth concert Mel Bush, shrewdest and most successful of the top British promoters told me: "Led Zeppelin are, without question, the most successful band in the world, "Nobody else ‘could sell out five Earls Court concerts, At his British peak, David Bowie could just manage to sell out Earls Court for one night. Pink Floyd tried to do two nights but ‘only sold hal the tickets for the second ni Top American promoters agree that has never been anything like the British group. Nor even the Rolling Stones are in their class as crowd-pullers.. American attendance records were established years ago by the Beatles and most of them stood from the mid-sixties until the early seventies, when Zep ccame along aad smashed them Their recent 26-city tour of the U.S. attracted 4 total audience of around 700,000, and American ticket prices are usvally close 10 $12 a head But who ced Zeppelin? has the man in the street ever heard of them? How many Aults could name one band member? “The fist name to remember is Jimmy Pi the 31-year old former Yardbird wo pulled Led Zeppelin together in 1968. In a business cra ‘with grvat guitarists, he i certainly one ofthe Exciting ard imaginative and with astonishing technique, he leads the way. ‘The 26-year old vocalist Robert Plant follows. The latest, Pliysical Graffiti is stil elose tothe top of the all-important American alum charts. The band's carnings have been conservatively estimated at §25 million a year. For Led Zeppelin there are no rules. Just sweat and inspiration and Rock & roll magic. To take in a Led Zeppelin concert is to undergo an astonishing, Jenn mind-blowing experience, ‘The success of Led Zeppelin has 4 fot 10 do with the management of a 89 year old former ‘wrestler and bouncer ~ Peter Grant. If you ever imagined something better than Danish T.V. 1969 - this should be it eis vintage 1969 video in COLOUR! For the first time ever ~ here's the exclusive review. ‘This footage hails from Paris T.V. during a little festival of bands that headlined Led Zeppelin. The other groups performing ranged from orchestras to ballets and rock music. Tt seems to me that it was captured forever on film [because ofthe ether ariforms included on the bill, and Led Zeppelin just happened to be there. So, ‘why is this the coolest celluloid you've ever seen? ‘Well, Iu begins with a shot of the mighty Zep backstage, You can see Page and Jones holding their guitars close together tuning up. Jones holds ‘up the Fender bass and Page adjusts his Les Paul ~ yes, that's right Page uses the classic sunburst Gibson Les Paul in this performance. (Around this time in "69, he switched over to the Les Paul from the Telecaster). The scene then cuts to tan talking on the phone (in French of course). ‘When he hangs up the phone, you can hear a familiar sound in the distance - sounds like Communication Breakdown’ - itis! The camera shifts t0 the stage where John Bonham is seen blasting away on drums. It's. soundeheck. The shots of Bonham are simply incredible and will amaze anyone within listening or viewing range. He is the highlight in this footage of the soundcheck 0 the camera gets less of the other members. Bonham is twirling his drum sticks ‘With true skill while playing impossible fills with fone hand and foot, ‘You've never seen anything like it! They play through the song and they seem ready for the real show. The cameramen and Soundmen are holding microphones testing forthe best results. The tape then cuts to the show. The announcers are introducing the show and are reading the names of people performing. Led Zeppelin tops the bill and receives a respectable applause from the audience. Speaking of the ‘crowd, most of them are not the typical ype of fans you'd expect to see ata rock concert. ‘There are a [ot of older_men and women as well as young children. (They were obviously there for ihe lighter side ofthe show. ‘We then sce the Zeppelin entourage backstage, ready For another thunderous performance. They look a bit uncomfortable {Waiting to go on stage- maybe they realize that this may not have been an ideal fineup to playing ‘Nevertheless, they are ready to rock and they sive ittheir all, One of the promoters then signals {o the band o go on. You can sce the stunned Faces of the older members of the audience throughout the performance. As the song ends they receive a more than appreciative applause Plant introduces the next song; "This is called Dazed und Confused ‘You ean hear John Paul starting the bass riff to the song but the tape cuts to the violin bow Noto. KNEBWORTH 1979. 1974 [had bought tickets for new outdoor rock festival, a ‘one-day event ata place called Knebworth. 1 bought my ticket like thousands of other people, because Led Zeppelin were supposed to be headlining. As we now all Knovr Tras five years too early, but L did attend and I enjoyed myself enough to attend every summer. Pink Floyd in 1975, the Rolling Stones in 1976, Genesis in 1978. Then | emigrated to Canada, Thad visited Canada on vacation in the summer of 1977 and had acquired tickets to Led Zeppelin show at Buffalo's Rich Stadium. 1 Titerally flew the Atlantic to see them, Just days before the Buffalo gig, a personal tragedy struck Robert Plant’ family and the gig was cancelled ‘Afier emigrating to Canada in late 1978 T found ‘out that the headlining aet at Knebworth in 1979 ‘was (0 be guess who? Feeling more than alittle frustrated, I parchased my tickets and flew back across the Atlantic the other way to try and Zeppelin again, This time Twas lucky. ‘My friends, who T hadn't seen in almost a year threw a big weleome home party, and we all planned our big weekend at Knebworth. In true communal hippy fashion we crammed 18 of us into two Ford Econoline vans which we had Linked by CB radio (illegal in the U-K. athe time, Thad brought them with me from Canada). We had the CB because only one of us knew for certain how to find Knebworth House, and so we ‘would keep in touch and follow him. ‘The total journey was 180 miles and in keeping with ‘Mutphy’s Law we lost the other truck before we had gone 5 miles (they ended up ip Bristol and Finally made it Knebworth 14 hours behind us). It was still dark and there was little oF no artifical light through the forest. On arriving I was astonished to see that almost every single person was being herded through one of four turnstiles; a logistical htmare. By the time I had squeezed through fe was already maybe ten thousand people in front of the stage. ALthe time my own vanity immediately thought that he had been talking (0 the roadie. In retrospect there were probably dozens of people there from Canada and it was probably just a coincidence Well after dark, and after a particularly boring set by Todd Rundgren, the atmosphere began to become thick with anticipation. It was not the same as Earl's Count but the Feeling of an impending event was unmistakable. By th Thad made my way to the eentre ofthe audience, fand was now siding about ten feet to right of the mixing desk. I had my camera, my binoculars, binoculars, my Smm movie camera, my CB. and mny tape deck. I fell like a walking ad for a high-tech store! There Was no announcement, bu the stage back-drop suddenly began to glow in the dark. Once again I was to be absolutely astonished by the magnitude ofthe video screen, It completely fwarfed the one at Earl's Court. in this day and fage we are used to seeing these things, but then, it wwas unprecedented. The frst picture it showed ‘was Page's back, inthe blue shirt with the Strap across it, and then of course the audience began to-cheer. The sheer size of the audience {about 250,000) meant that the cheering did not Sound coordinated but sounded like the swelling fsurton abeach, ‘There were fires lit throughout the crowd as people burned their accumulated garbage.
