Hong Kong Model United Nations 2011

Position Paper: Digital Divide

Country: The Kingdom of Thailand

Thailand is currently ranked number 23, in the amount of internet usage, although the

majority of the population who are using internet are educated people living in the

urban areas and not people living in the rural areas of the country. The rapid increase

of Facebook users can show us how many people use the internet in our country.

The usage of technology has greatly affected our country and is used by the public as

a way of sharing their views, by using internet cites like Facebook and Twitter. Our

country has used technology to build the industries that we have today, for example

the car part manufacturing industry and the computer parts industry.

The increase of Internet usage throughout the country, especially the rural areas, is

increasing rabidly, as shown in the increase of people joining Facebook. Facebook

and other blogs are used by the our urban citizens as a way of broadcasting their

views. The importance of the radio in our rural areas cannot be overshadowed,

because the using the radio is the only way for the people living in the rural areas to

be able to learn about accruing events in our country; there are 524 licensed radio

stations throughout the country. 140 of these radio stations belong to the public

relations department where people our allowed to express themselves as a way of our

government to understand what the public wants to be fixed.

In our country’s opinion the Internet and tele-communications is a crucial tool in

modernizing our country and countries around the world. There is a lack of internet

access in our country and people in the rural areas might not be able to afford to buy a

computer and internet services. A way of resolving this problem is by opening

internet cafes around the country offering internet usage to the population for a fair

price. Furthermore this will help unite the country and by letting people share their

views on certain issues we as a united nation will be able to resolve them.

With the rapid modernisation of our country we can see that the number of Internet

users throughout our nation has increased rapidly with the rapid modernisation of our

country. Using the Internet has been a way of for the public to express themselves.

In conclusion, we hope that our fellow delegates will assist your nation and nations

around the world in an effort to unite the nation under a one mantle, the Internet. By

the use of the Internet countries can not just industrialise but become unified as

citizens of their respected countries and citizens of the world. Fully aware that the

digital divide is a problem in our nation and is on are agenda to be fixed by building

landlines into the rural areas and in so we can modernise the rural areas and unite our

country.
