Design Contest

Have Designs on India?

Design is what provides an insight into the shape of things to come in the future.
India – exciting, dynamic and ever-changing. A seamless combination of rich heritage
and innovation!

If you think that your design skills are bold, innovative and can make an impact on the
life of people participate in the INDIA Future of Change Design Contest.

The INDIA Future of Change Design contest invites students from around
the world to present their designs on any one or more or all of the five contest themes
suggested here.

Contest Themes
Theme 1. Healthcare/Special Needs
Theme 2. Transportation/Mobility
Theme 3. Digital Environment
Theme 4. Home Environment
Theme 5. Public Space Environment

Contest Categories
Category 1. International Segment
Open to Foreign citizens only
Category 2. National Segment
Open to Indian citizens only

Prizes
• Two winners in each Contest Theme in each Contest Category:
(A total of ten winners in each Contest Category. Twenty winners in all.)
• One Grand Prize winner to be declared under each Contest Category:
Grand Prize - cash prize of US$ 35000 each
• A fifteen day all-expenses-paid vacation to select destinations in India for all winners.
• 4-week internship for the Grand Prize winners in leading Indian and transnational
companies for 10 winners.
• Presentations to venture capitalists, angel investors, mentors/incubators
for all 20 winners.
• Top 20 entries to be exhibited at the INDIA Future of Change Showcase
at the Kirchner Museum, Davos, Switzerland, January 26-30, 2011 on the sidelines
of the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum.
Rules of Participation
Eligibility
• Entry to the contest is open to all students.
• The participant must ensure he/she registers and submits in the correct category
- i.e. International segment or National segment of the Design Contest.
Submission in the incorrect category will lead to disqualification .
• The participant must be an enrolled student in any school/college/institute
and be above 18 years or under 32 years of age as on 31 December 2010.
• Participation is open to teams and individual submissions.
• In the case of team participation, team size must not exceed 4 members.
• Submitted projects must be original and not currently in mass production.
• Projects entered previously in other competitions earlier
will not be considered eligible for entry and will face immediate disqualification.
• Design ideas that have previously been awarded in other competitions
will not be considered eligible for entry and will face immediate disqualification.

Technical Criteria
• The design idea must be innovative in its form
• All submissions must relate to INDIA Future of Change
and should be relevant in the Indian context.
• Feasibility of the idea will be of primary importance in the judging process.
• All submissions must be environment and resource-friendly and sustainable.
• Each contestant can submit a maximum of one entry per category
and a maximum of five across categories.

Process of Submission
• All submissions must be made online through www.indiafutureofchange.com
No physical prints will be accepted.
• All submissions must carry a proof to identify the contestant as a student.
• The design idea must be accompanied by a concise concept note in a language of your
choice, not exceeding 500 words. The note must explain the thought behind the work,
its practical implementation and relevance to the context.
• The design idea could be a product, process or a system.
• Each contestant should present the idea in not more than five A3 size
(420mm x 297mm) paper and submit it as a PDF document.
JPEG files will also be accepted but PDF is the preferred format for submission.
Contestants can opt for vertical or horizontal formats as required.
• The 5 pages of A3 could be presented under:
a. Problem Definition/Need finding/Background
b. Analysis/Insights/Design opportunities and Redefined Design Goals
c. Design solution
d. Design solution
e. Detailed drawing/rendering of the product or schematic map of the process/system
• Each entry (inclusive of all files submitted) should not exceed 10 MB.
• The designs entered may not be marked with any form of identification
(name, logo, etc.). Entries will be disqualified if they are marked.
• All submissions must carry an accompanying Letter of Acknowledgement,
giving credit to information sources, image resources etc., wherever applicable.
• The designs should be submitted electronically
to designentry@indiafutureofchange.com
by 31 January, 2011, 1200 hrs GMT.
Rights and Reproduction
• Any moral and paternity right regarding the project sent in for the contest is the
designer’s property. However, by submitting a design in the competition,
the participant agrees to give INDIA Future of Change and its partners/sponsors
the first right of refusal to the exclusive use of the design. This option is valid until the
end of 2011.
• All participants agree to allow their entries to be published or showcased by INDIA
Future of Change. INDIA Future of Change retains the right to publish the submissions
and pemissable information associated with them and the participants in all
communication exercises for INDIA Future of Change campaign.
• INDIA Future of Change or any employee or agent of India Future of Change will NOT
be liable for:
(a) any costs incurred or loss or liability suffered by the participants in relation to the
program
(b) any lost expectation of profits by participant
(c) any failure by participant to understand their rights in relation to Intellectual
Property, or the rights of The Organizers in relation to Intellectual Property
(d) any other benefit applicants may expect to gain by participating in the program.
• INDIA Future of Change may change the Terms and Conditions of participation at any
time without specific notice. The amended Terms and Conditions of Entry will be
effective immediately upon being posted on www.indiafutureofchange.com. Important
changes to the Terms and Conditions will be highlighted on www.indiafutureofchange.
com for your convenience; however, you acknowledge that it is your sole responsibility
to regularly visit www.indiafutureofchange.com to read any changes to the Terms and
Conditions of Entry. Conditions apply.
• Disputes, if any, are subject to the jurisdiction in the courts of Delhi, India only.

Selection Criteria
• The entries will be judged on the relevance and the quality of perspective presented
within the context of the contest theme.
• Entries will be short-listed based on adherence to clauses mentioned under ‘Eligibility’
and ‘Technical Criteria’. Also, there will be weightage for overall merit of the idea.
• Each entry will be evaluated on criteria pertinent to the design contest themes, viz. –
~ Is it a creative and innovative solution?
~ Does it address and solve an existing essential problem?
~ Is the product/service/system appropriate in its functions?
~ Does it create a satisfying user experience while using the product
or service or system?
~ Does the solution follow a design process?
~ Does the solution show respect for the environment and address sustainablity issues?
• Emphasis will be laid on the participants’ conviction in the idea and the thoroughness
of research and understanding of the design and its context.
• INDIA Future of Change may at any time and for any reason:
(a) disqualify a participant from the program if the evaluation panel or the Grand Jury
in their absolute discretion, determine that such disqualification is warranted
(b)discontinue the program by posting a notice to that effect
on www.indiafutureofchange.com
Selection Procedure
• All entries will be reviewed by a panel of renowned Indian and international
professionals, academicians and domain experts.
• There is no fixed matrix of judging criteria. All entries will be judged individually,
and the winners selected by consensus of the Jury.

Declaration of Results
• Top ten winners in each of the categories will be announced by March 15, 2011.
• The Grand Prizes will be announced in March, 2011 during the Award Ceremony
Function in New Delhi. Exact date of the Award Ceremony will be communicated
to the winners in January, 2011.
