UNIVERSITY OF SULAIMANI Final EXAM - 1st attempt SUBJECT: Steel Design

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING 2019-2020 8/June/2020 TIME: 9:00 AM to 11:59 PM

CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT FOURTH YEAR EXAMINER: Mr. Alan Saeed

Q1:Answer the followings: (20 points)

1-What is local buckling, where it may happen, how it could be prevented?

2-Does Euler buckling of a column describes Inelastic buckling of long columns?

explain how?

3-What is meant by stiffened element? Which of the following rolled sections are
considered as stiffened?

a -Wall of an HSS (hollow structural section).

b -Leg of an angle.

c -Flange of a channel.

4- What is meant by compact section? How a steel section could be compact?

5- Why does AISC specify minimum and maximum edge distance for bolts in
tension members?

Q2 : Design the weld truss connection shown in (figure 1).Use E80 electrodes
SMAW process.All steels are grade A-36 Fu= 58 ksi. Also find the thickness of the
gusset plate. ( 15 points)

Q3: Determine the available strength of C12*30 attached to a gusset plate through
the web as shown in (figure 2),using 10 bolts 7/8 in diameter,3 inch spacing C/C
,bearing type,threads included considering yielding , rupture,bolts,bearing and
block shear. Find also the maximum length to prevent buckling.

Fy=50 ksi Fu=58 ksi (15 points)

Q4 : An ASTM A992 W12×96 column bears on a 24-in. × 24-in. concrete

pedestal with f ′c = 3 ksi. The space between the base plate and the concrete
pedestal has grout with f ′c = 4 ksi. Design the ASTM A36 base plate to support
the following loads in axial compression: (15 points)

2
PD = 115 kips

PL = 345 kips

Column ASTM A992 Fy = 50 ksi Fu = 65 ksi

Base Plate ASTM A36 Fy = 36 ksi Fu = 58 ksi

Column W12×96

d = 12.7 in. bf = 12.2 in. tf = 0.900 in. tw = 0.550 in.

Q5: Determine the maximum value of service load P that can be carried by the
beam in( figure 3) using AISC LRFD considering 1) bending; 2) shear strength
and 3) deflection limit of L/360. The load P is 25% dead load and 75% live
load. Disregard the self weight. The beam is braced at the supports and at the
midspan point only. Beam section is built-up Fy=50 ksi Fu= 65 ksi.

Q6: Check whether the section W12x45 has sufficient available strength to
support the loads applied to the vertical members in the single-story frame shown
in the figure. The braced frame is subjected to dead load ,roof live load and wind
load. Bending is about the strong axis, and each column is laterally braced at top
and bottom.Fy=50 ksi Fu=65 ksi.The frame is indeterminate so from first order
analysis the column load and moment are shown (in fig.4)for each case.

(use load combination for loads and moments) (20 points)
