Kitchen Safety and Conveniences /

Prevention of underlying risk
Kitchen hazards are a common underlying risk in worldwide area. Our
product is aimed to reduce the possibility of any harm done to human in
kitchen as much as possible.
Research
-A typical family stove reaches 250 F to 450 F

-Cooking’s purpose is to eliminate potential bacteria and reduce health risk

-Carrying, lifting, pushing, and other manual handling manoeuvres can, if not done safely,
seriously harm the body’s musculoskeletal system.

-Kitchens often have numerous slip, trip, and fall risks created by human error

-If not properly stored in shelves and fridges, objects could fall from height onto people, while
food could become unsafe to use over time.

Brainstorming
-Kitchen Mittens ( very commonly used)

-Fire Extinguisher ( last line safety hardlock)

-Heat absorbing suits

-Asbestos products (A very heat resistant mineral)

-Food insulated while cooking, (like this scene in the movie pixels)

-Robot that cooks for you

-Extended prosthetics that can be used to cook without taking risk (sounds

like cooking pots handle

-Microbots (insulates heat) that releases liquid nitrogen when it detects

incoming risk
Proposed Solution

Kitchen Mitts / Heat resistant units

This Solution sounds the most easily usable and realistic. Most people are able to afford a

mitten in their house, and it doesn’t require crazy technology to create heat resistance mittens.

This solution easily has a mass produce-able ability to fulfill common needs in the family. Other

ideas are either too unrealistic, don't have the technology, too big to commonly spread, or too

expensive and not convenient.

Hypothesis

By using Kitchen Mittens, The user’s hand would be insulated

from the dangerous heat transferring from the stove and
prevent possible human damage.
Ideal Prototype Image

The mittens are made up of Heat resistant

materials, There are only four fingers together and
one thumb, This restrict hand usage but increases
the resistance against heat. The top half and the
bottom half are made up of different materials
sealed together, The top materials renders heat
resistance and silver lines as the design, and the
bottom half of the mitten contributes to the
conveniences and comfort . There are two layers of
materials inside the mitten, on the inside layer
wool are filled to ensure the comfort when usage,
and outer layer are filled with heat resistant
material that insulates hand while cooking which
ensures quality.
Testing Method

The subjects is asked hold a bowl of rice heated for 2 minute in the microwave bear
handed , then the subject is asked to wear the prototype then hold up a bowl of rice
from microwave that has been heated for 2 minutes. Then the subject was asked to
describe if he/she was able to complete the task during both trials and any
comments / suggestions.

Was the subject able to complete the task?

Did the prototype accomplish its purpose in protecting the subject?

Data table

The same subject were used for both experiments.

Time held Sucessful? Comments

Bare-Handed 7s No “I dropped the bowl

on the table
because the heat
started hurting”

Using Prototype 120 s (completed) Yes “I can’t feel the

overwhelming heat
from the bowl
anymore”

Potential improvement of 16 times the bare-handed held time.

Testing Solution

The designed solution works perfectly fine. The subject weren’t able to
complete the task first since the bowl was too hot for it to be held
bare-handedly, But while wearing the prototype, the subject was able to
complete the test. The subject claimed : “ Wearing this mittens made holding
the rice bowl so much easier, My hand can’t feel any overwhelming heat and it
is very comfortable to wear these while picking up hot stuff in the kitchen.”

The subject wasn’t able to complete the task without the prototype, therefore
the prototype is successful in protecting the subject.
Analyze

The prototype perfectly achieved its purpose. The subject is protected from the
potentially damaging heat. The measured temperature of outside the mittens

( 147C) is much more greater than the measured temperature inside the
mittens(28C) , therefore it is successful in insulating the subject from the heat. And
there aren’t any potential damage done to either the Mittens or the subject.
Conclusion

The hypothesis was perfectly achieved by the prototype, It

improved the subject’s held time by 16 times .Therefore the
prototype is successful in completing its purposes. For it does have in
real life applications and usage.
