SPH 3U1 INDEPENDENT STUDY

Purpose: To help prepare the student to learn on his own without relying constantly on the
teacher to direct the learning process.

UNIT: WAVES & SOUND

Background: Waves and sound represent significant elements in today’s culture. A world
without them would be a very different place. Examples surround us both figuratively and
literally. Communications devices such as cell/phones, radio, TV, musical instruments, and
medical procedures eg. Ultrasound, X-rays are technologies that make use of waves and sound.
This unit is intended to help students understand some basic concepts of waves and sound.

Topics:
• Vibrations and waves transmission of sound
• Characteristics of sound sound intensity
• Doppler effect characteristics of hearing sound
• Principle of superposition standing waves
• Resonance: acoustical & mechanical beats

1. Read and summarize and make notes on:


a) Sections 10.1
b) Chapter 13: Sec 13.1 – 13.7
c) Chapter 14: Sec 14.2 – 14.8
