Protocol of the proposed research

1. Title of the research project:
“ASSESSMENT OF COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IN MAINTENANCE
HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS USING THE MONTREAL COGNITIVE
ASSESSMENT TEST”
2. Aim:
The aim of the study is to assess the cognitive impairment in maintenance hemodialysis
patients by using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test.
Objective:
To evaluate and assess the cognitive impairment in maintenanace hemodialysis patients
who were on hemodialysis more than three months by using Montreal Cognitive
Assessment Test.
3. Materials and Methodology:
Sample Area: The study will be conducted at the Department of Nephrology Sri
Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Porur, Chennai.
Sample Size: 150 patients (α 0.05 and β 80)
Type of the study: Prospective Observational study
Period of the study: 6months
Inclusion criteria:
 Age 18 – 65 years
 Dialysis vintage of at least 3 months
 ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis
 Patients who were willing to give informed consent
Exclusion criteria:
 Peritoneal Dialysis Patients
 Acute Kidney Injury Patients
 Newly Initiated on Hemodialysis

4. Study Methodology:
Patients will be included in this study after obtaining informed consent and based on
their inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were grouped based on their age, vintage of
hemodialysis, co-morbid conditions. Then the cognitive status of each patient will be
analyzed by using Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test (MoCA).The obtained data will
be analyzed statistically by using SPSS software analysis.

7
5. Need of the study
Cognitive Impairment is when a person has trouble remembering, learning new things,
concentrating or making decisions that affect their everyday life.
End Stage Renal Disease is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment in
patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.
This study will be helpful in detecting the cognitive impairment of patients on
maintenance hemodialysis by using Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test (MoCA).
The MoCA test is short screening which covers the patient’s attention, concentration,
memory, orientation, language, visuoconstructional skills, conceptual thinking,
calculation and executive function.
Advantages:
 More sensitive than Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE).
 Easily approachable and non-invasive screening tool
 Early detection of cognitive impairment helps in prevention of depression in
maintenance hemodialysis patients.
 Early detection of cognitive impairment will reduce the treatment time with
cognitive stimulation therapy.

6. Statistical analysis:
The results of the study will be analyzed using SPSS software. The data will be
expressed in percentage, mean & standard deviation.P value <0.05 will be considered
Statistically significant.

Brief description of the study process:

This study is aimed to assess the cognitive impairment of patients on maintenance hemodialysis.
Patients were grouped based on their age, vintage of hemodialysis, co-morbid conditions. By
using Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test which is a screening tool scores ranges between 0 and
30. A score 26 or over is considered to be normal, score < 26 indicates the presence of cognitive
impairment.
Possible risk of the participants: There is no risk involved in this study
Cost and payment to the participant: There is no cost involved and no payment will be
made to patient
Confidentiality: Information obtained in this study will be kept confidential. Your name will
not be used in reporting of information in publications or conference presentations.
