1. How did Lewis have to make an important decision that had moral
implications?
2. What was the main message that the author was trying to convey in the
novel?

III. Prior Knowledge:


● Students should be familiar with the process of writing citations from a text.

● Analyze the explicit message of the novel using cited textual evidence.
● Analyze inferences drawn from the novel using cited textual evidence.

VII. Instructional Procedures:


a. Before​:
Do Now Activity​ (Formative Assessment/Engagement) 5mins
● Students will investigate the following question independently:
○ What do we know about Lewis so far? Do any of his
experiences match experiences you have had bridging the
difference between home and school?

b. During​:
Evidence Based Response Overview ​(Explain) 15 mins
● Teacher will explain what an Evidence Based Response is to
students.
● Teacher will give examples of both an explicit message and an
inference drawn from the text that is analysed with cited textual
evidence.

Discussion ​(Elaborate) 10 mins


● Students will discuss in small groups how the main character
Lewis changes as a result of his actions.
● Students will then discuss ideas with the whole class.

Plot Structure Roller Coaster ​(Explore) 15 mins


● Students will work in pairs to complete a plot structure worksheet.
● Students are expected to outline the rising action, falling action,
climax, resolution, and exposition of the novel.

c. After​:

​Exit Ticket ​(Summative Assessment/Evaluation) 5 mins


● Students will complete an exit ticket that evaluates their understanding
of the lesson objective.
- Give an example of one inference and one explicit message you
would like to explore from the text.
