MUSIC
Music of the Lowlands of Luzon
You will discover how the people of lowlands of Luzon express their feelings toward each other and the environment,
their history and religious beliefs through the medium of voice and musical instruments.
Liturgical music originated as a part of religious ceremony, and includes a number of traditions, both ancient and modern.
A devotional song is a hymn which accompanies religious observances and rituals. In Eastern and Near-Eastern religions,
devotionals can function as communion prayer and meditation.
Activity 1
You will hear examples of Liturgical music and Devotional music and describes its characteristics. Write it in your
notebook.

Arts

The 7 principles of art and design are balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity and movement.
The elements of art and design – line, shape/form, space, value, color and texture – to create a composition as a whole.

Arts and Crafts in Luzon

 Taka refers to paper mache made using carved wooden sculpture used as a mold. The craft originated in the town
of Paete, Laguna in the Philippines
 Bulul, also known as bul-ul or tinagtaggu, is a carved wooden figure used to guard the rice crop by the Ifugao
(and their sub-tribe Kalanguya) peoples of northern Luzon.
 “Batok” is the general term for tattoos. The practice was common among the Bontok, Ifugao and Kalinga people.
 Traditional Ilocano handicrafts, like the “inabel” fabrics & “burnay” jars are folk arts that continue to tell its tales
for many hundred years now.

Fitness Assessment

A fitness assessment is a series of measurements that help determine physical fitness. It is a comprehensive assessment
of health related fitness administered by professional, trained staff.

A fitness assessment provides a baseline measurement of -cardiovascular endurance,

- body composition, - muscular endurance, -muscular strength, - flexibility.

Objectives of Fitness Assessment

• to determine the health status and physical fitness of an individual through the assessment of the 5 components of fitness

• To help develop and establish an effective fitness program.

• To establish goals and motivation

• To evaluate progress

• To identify the strengths and weaknesses in relation to the physical fitness

Fitness Tests

Agility is the ability to move quickly and change directions while maintaining control and balance. Good agility requires
a combination of speed, balance, power and co-ordination.

Cardio-vascular endurance assessment

 Cardio-respiratory endurance: the ability to perform large-muscle, dynamic exercise of moderate to high
intensity for prolonged periods.
 Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of; the heart, the blood, the blood vessels the respiratory system to
provide the required oxygen and fuel to the muscles for carrying on a particular exercise for specific period of
time at a steady rate.

Aerobic - the main goal of any aerobic exercise is to provide an increased amount of oxygen to the body. Aerobic
exercise involved three specific types of exercise including; cycling, swimming, and running.

Body Composition assessment

The evaluation of body composition can be done through measure of the two-component (fat and fat- free mass) assess
by;

 Height & Weight (Body Mass Index), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), hydrostatic weighing,
Circumference Measurements, Waist Girth & Waist-to-Hip Ratio.
 Skin-fold test which determines the body mass index, or percentage of actual "fat".

 Muscular Strength

Tests muscular strength of the upper body, (Push Up Strength Test), or Muscular Endurance which tests the ability of
the muscles to exert force over an extended period of time.

Muscular endurance

Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to contract without becoming exhausted. Is very
important for people playing sports and who have to sustain an activity for long periods of time.

Flexibility Test

The capacity of the joints to move through a full range of motion; the ability to bend and recover without injury.
Evaluates flexibility of lower back and posterior leg muscles.

Warm-up activities are necessary to prepare the body for vigorous physical activity because they increase performance
and decrease the risk of muscular injury

Health

Dimensions of Holistic Health

 Physical health means how well your body functions. It means you can carry out everyday tasks without
becoming too tired.You can attain this by giving your body total care, which includes the following:

-keeping your body fit by exercising and participating in active games

-eating a well-balanced diet

-getting adequate sleep and rest

-drinking enough water

-practicing cleanliness and good grooming habits

-getting regular medical and dental checkup and treatment

-avoiding harmful substances, such as tobacco, alcohol and drugs of abuse

 Mental or intellectual health means being a lifelong learner by continuously wanting to learn new things and
improve one’s skills. A mentally healthy person is open to new ideas and experiences that can improve personal,
family, and community life.
 Emotional health means expressing your happiness, love, joy and hope as well as your sadness, anger, stress and
fear in healthful productive ways. You can best practice these when you:
- face life’s problems squarely
- handle stress and seek help, if needed
- express your emotions in positive ways
- deal with life’s pressures and stresses in positive ways
- build strong communication network among family, friends and peers
 Social health refers to how well you get along with other people. This can be observed when you:
- make and keep friends
- play/work well with a group
- give and get help from others when needed
- communicate well and show respect and care for yourself and others
 Moral-spiritual health means being at peace and in harmony with yourself, others and a higher power or bigger
reality.
- What you feel, think and say what you believe in or value are shown in how you act.
- It refers to your personal beliefs, values, and faith.

Interrelatedness of Health Dimensions

Example

An individual is affected physically if food and shelter are not fully satisfied. This person will also be affected
emotionally as she/he may feel inadequate, insecure, and unsafe. And how will this affect the mental health of the person?
Anxiety may develop when a person is worrying about his/her condition. Relationship with family, friends, and with
others may suffer also when a person is not contented and his/her longing for love and affection is not met. When the
physical, mental, emotional, and social needs are not satisfied, a person may resort to unethical behavior to satisfy his/her
basic needs.
