Today´s workshop

5
Key messages of today´s meeting from VDA
Session 1: Role of Gasoline & Diesel in Future Light Duty Vehicles (esp. with regard to CO2, RDE)
CO2
• Constructive collaboration with EU institutions on the recently presented CO2 proposal
• Proposal is in some points to overambitious and does not take into account all potentials of CO2 reduction
• Key of EU Commission was technology neutrality in proposal: no E-Quota or ban of any technology
RDE
• Since Sept. 2017 RDE mandatory for all new types in Europe. Regulatory development process in Europe showed that splitting a regulation in three
or four packages is not an effective way to get a solid regulation
• India could learn from the European experiences with RDE introduction: RDE should be finalized in one package with a lead time of at least 3 years
Diesel
• In Germany we are not talking about a ban, we are talking about some restrictions for some distinct cities driven by NGOs for cars older than seven
years. German Government is committed to Diesel technology.

Session 2: Development of Heavy Duty Powertrain

• After 8 years of development and regulatory work the European and German truck and bus industry welcomes very much the formal
implementation of VECTO (standardized measurement of fuel consumption of trucks)
• It will create transparency on CO2 emissions for customers which industry has never seen before
• This could be a role model for India as well

Session 3: Development in xEVs: Possible Future Options

• The German car industry is heavily committed to the market uptake of EVs
• The uptake very much requires infrastructural support by the local governments
• In this scope the harmonization of an internationally accepted charging interface solution is recommended

6
Conclusion for the future

Federal Chancellor Merkel Sept. 2017:

“The challenges for Germany are visible strongly

in the automotive industry: Decades are still
needed for combustion engines, but at the same
time the path to new drive technologies and
digitalization must be taken”
