Introduction:
Tourism :
"Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places
outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for
leisure, business and other purposes."
Objectives of Tourism :
• Movement of people and their stay at various destinations.
• Gives rise to activities at the destinations.
• Developing social and physical infrastructure and amenities to facilitate
visitors.
• Gives rise to recreational and other cultural events to attract tourists.
• Developing pleasure activities and professional service providers.
• Gives rise to various service demands which are provided by commercial sense
of tourist industry.

Need of Study
Objectives :
• Identify heritage sites & study its potential for tourism purpose;
• Assessment of heritage sites as per UNESCO heritage criteria;
• To prepare heritage tourism circuit with considering optimal route;
• To prepare relevant planning proposals and recommendation for the
study area.
Vision:
• To enhance and promote Heritage of Surat city for tourism purpose
Scope of Work
• This study is limited within the boundary of Surat City.
• Article 49 deals with the protection of monuments and places and objects of
national importance under the directive principles of state policy, which states that
“it shall be the obligation of the State to protect every monument or place or
object of artistic or historic interest (declared by or under law made by
parliament) to be of national importance, from spoliation, disfigurement,
destruction, removal, disposal or export, as the case may be”.
• Ancient and historical monuments and records and archaeological sites and remains
(declared to be of national importance) are in the union list (entry 67); ancient and
historical monuments and records, other than those declared to be of national
importance are in the state list (entry 12); and archaeological sites and remains,
• Other than those declared to be of national importance are in the concurrent list
(entry 40) as per the Schedule VII of the Constitution of India. "It shall be the duty
of every citizen of India to value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite
culture"

Mother Kunti and the Pandavas.

intangible heritage. According to
localise it is held more than 70 years.
It is famous for delicious food and
iftari, during the holy month of
Ramadan. It is known especially for
non-veg food and sweets but one can
get minor amount of veg food also.

Jama Masjid is a four-storeyed
minaret used as a Friday mosque and

which would be help in proposal to place heritage in tourism sector. This
survey includes more than 450 people.
• This survey is taken out with „Hogg and Tennis Method- 2009‟ sample size
calculation method.
• The result of this method shows that minimum 271 people survey should be
conducted for Surat city.

• As per their knowledge, how many Heritage Places/ Monuments are there in
Surat city?
As per the survey, majority people as per 38.5% of them think that only 16 to 30
places, 24.5% of them think about 31 to 45, as per 21.4% think up to 15 places
and monuments and only 3.7% think that there are more than 60 places and
monuments are there in Surat City.
It shows that there is a lack of awareness and information regarding heritage

According to Survey, 57.4% willing to make heritage as tourism, 37.9%
gives neutral opinion and only 4.8% denies.

• Government can propose this own project with of Hop-on Hop-off Bus to
connect different Circuits;
• To increase tourism potential, complete circuit should connect or provide
with major nearer transportation;
• For revenue generation, make a whole circuit with minimum amount of fees
or it can apply on individual places as Fort has done.
• Perform innovative activities such as public shows, exhibitions that people
are informed and aware about the heritage properties-precincts such as light
show on fort , cultural festivals etc.
• There are more than 2900 homes from central zone and Rander area ;
notified as Heritage by UMC which were built before 1950, it can be
convert into Heritage Home stay for tourist attraction.
