Problem/Opportunity:
 Many residents in Hilldale Community including students from Hilldale Community
College would like to grow their own vegetables as a source of fresh, organic and
cheap food, but do not have the space or knowledge to do so.
 It is expected that HCM/HCC will provide financial support and a site on campus
for establishing a community garden for residents and students.
 There is a group of interested residents and driven students (the Project Team)
willing to set up the garden.
 Experts are available within the Dept. of FSRM and AHS to assist the project and
small-scale research projects and collaboration with these departments are
possible.
 The community of Hilldale will eventually have the possibility to interact with the
international student community and share knowledge and ideas.
Project Goal:
Design and build a community garden for community members and students on land
acquired by HCM/HCC by October 2021.

Start and End Dates

The project will start on 10 April 2020 to 31 October 2021

Budget
$8000 has been allocated this project as many services provided is volunteer and
gratis, funds provided are allocated for materials. Additional funds will be available
if needed.
Key Schedule Milestones
 Completion of garden design and building by July 15, 2020
 First Harvest by October 2020
Objectives:
Design a garden to produce organic food for consumption by residents and students and
provide a safe environment for learning and social interaction from April 2020 to October
2021.
 Develop partnerships for expert support with the Departments of FSRM and AHS in
April 2020.
 Develop partnerships for funding with local businesses in May 2020.
Local business maybe able to donate materials or used goods
Garden will be built through volunteer labour
Produce will be shared and consumed by gardeners, produce is not intended to be sold at
this time
Recruit at least 30 community members to be members of the garden in August /
September 2020
 Recruit at least 30 students to be members of the garden in September 2020.
 Construct and plant out the garden ready for first harvest in October 2020.
Success Criteria:
 Garden looks neat, attractive, is safe and productive.
 Costs of materials and garden construction are equal to or less than $8000.
 Members are trained in how to run the garden.
 A governance structure that includes the legal requirements is developed.
 After project is complete garden committee is well trained to run the garden after
project is complete
 The first crop is harvested by October 2020.
Assumptions:
 The land provided by HCM/HCC is suitable for growing vegetables.

 The experts in FSRM and AHS will be available and willing to share their
knowledge and skills.
 After their training, community members and students will have sufficient skills
and knowledge to run the garden effectively.
 The HCM/HCC insurance policy will cover the garden.
 The Project Team will have enough time to manage the project between
personal/work, classes and study commitments.

Risks
 Insufficient support from HCM/HCC in terms of land, budget and experts
 Gardener drop out
 Crop failure
 Vandalism and theft
 Personal injuries
 Budget is exceeded

Obstacles:
 Maintaining project momentum over winter holidays

Project Cost
The Budget for this project $8000 which will be spent during the building stage of the
garden as the goal of the project will be to solicited many of the goods and services from
local business, the contingency fund of $2000 in case there is some unexpected costs.
This represents 25% of the total budget.
