Dear Parish Family,
After one of the Christmas Masses this year, a little girl
about six years old came running up to me: “Hey,” she said,
“I remember you. You’re the guy that baptized me.” “I am?”
I said. “So, you remember your baptism?” She nodded
eagerly. “Aren’t you lucky”, I told her. And I meant it. “Most
of us were just little babies when we got baptized, including
me, I don’t remember a thing.”
This weekend our parish family joins our entire Christian
family of faith as we commemorate and celebrate the
Baptism of the Lord. In today’s Gospel from Matthew (3:13-
17), Jesus asks to be baptized at the hands of John the
Baptist. At this sacred moment, the heavens open, quite
literally, and in the presence of the Father and the Spirit, the
identity of Jesus is revealed to us: “This is my beloved Son,
with whom I am well pleased.”
At three of our liturgies, we will celebrate the baptism of
several infants and children—a wonderful way for those of
us who “don’t remember a thing” to recall and reclaim the
moment of our own baptism in and through Jesus Christ—
the moment in which our true identity as beloved sons and
daughters of the Lord is revealed to us and to our
community.
This weekend also serves as both the culmination of the
all too brief Christmas season and, in a significant way, the
herald of Lent and Easter.
It gives us the opportunity to consider in a real and
conscious way the importance of the baptismal promises
which, for most of us, were recited by our godparents on our
behalf:
Celebrant: Do you reject Satan?
Response: I do.

ENTERING A NEW YEAR
It’s a new year and many of us are making resolutions.
Most of these we will keep for a little while but if past years
are a good indicator, well before Easter arrives, our
resolutions are good intentions simply gone by the wayside
in the hurry of life.
In the next couple of weeks many of you will receive your
annual thank you letter from the parish (you know the one
that you use for your tax filing), and some of you will look at
it and say “I can do better than that”. If you want to make a
New Year’s resolution with one hundred percent probability
of success, try this. “I resolve to return more of the gifts that
God has given me on a more regular basis.” Then fill out an
EFT sign-up sheet found in the kiosk of the rotunda, in the
office, or on the website and send it to the office.

Celebrant: And all his works?
Response: I do.
Celebrant: And all his empty promises?
Response: I do.
Celebrant: Do you believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth?
Response: I do.
Celebrant: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our
Lord, Who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died,
and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at
the right hand of the Father?
Response: I do.
Celebrant: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy
catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness
of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
Response: I do.
Renewing these promises is a way of making a total
commitment of our lives to God. This is the most important
decision a human being can make. We are called to give our
lives to the Lord. To decide to live for Him and not for
ourselves alone (2 Cor 5:15). And to respond to His total
Love with our love.
On another note, many thanks to everyone who
contributed so generously in terms of time, talent, and
treasure to make our Advent, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and
Christmas celebrations so wonderful. Last year I got myself
into a lot of trouble by trying to print the names of everyone
involved in service. Naturally, I inadvertently left out a few.
So this year, I will play it safe: Thank you, Everyone! Thank
you so much! And God bless you all.

rolls around you will look back at a resolution kept, you will
feel good about what you have done, and the support that
you give your parish family will be greatly appreciated.

Catechetical Minute
A Gift Unopened?

Today’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks the official
end of Christmastide in our Liturgical Year. Yet, there will be
for many Catholics a Christmas gift (one of our greatest gifts)
that is still unopened by most Roman Catholics. What is this
gift? Simple, the Sacred Scriptures, the Word of God,
the Bible.
Let’s take a look at some data (courtesy of America
Magazine):
- Only half of US adults can name a single Gospel. Do you
know how many there are?
- Most do not know the name of the first book of the Bible.
- 60 percent of Evangelicals (who are “sola scriptura”) state
that Jesus was born in Jerusalem and not that “little town
of Bethlehem”.
- Despite all the battles over posting the Ten Command-
ments, six in ten Americans cannot name five of them.
- For good measure, half of high school students think that
Sodom & Gomorrah were married!
- And, the Acts of the Apostles is a play that was written by
the Apostles.
So where are we? You are in a parish that offers weekly
Bible studies. There are Small Christian Communities that
weekly break open the Word of God for spiritual
nourishment and study. There is a parish library which offers
much in the way of books on the scriptures.
Our diocese offers classes held all over the county for
serious Scripture Study. There are many other resources
available. The question now falls to you. Will you open your
remaining Christmas gift?
Prayer Formation & Opportunities
CENTERING PRAYER: is a renewal of the rich
tradition of contemplative prayer in the Christian
Church. It is designed to reduce obstacles to an
intimate personal relationship with God. Our
centering prayer group meets every Wednesday
evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for prayer and instruction in
Rm. #12 in the McKeon Ctr. For additional information, log

INTERCESSORY PRAYER: our parishioners have the opportu-
nity to write their needs and blessings in the Intercessory
Prayer books that are located in the Serra Center and the
Parish Chapel. Members of this ministry meet each Saturday,
from 8:15-9:00 a.m. in Rm. 209 to pray for all members and
the intentions written by the parishioners in the books.
Members may also pray at home. Anyone can be part of this
ministry: shut-ins, retired, etc. For further information,

We will resume our study of the Gospel of Matthew. Please
feel free to join this study at anytime.
On Tuesday, January 11, the Lessons of Faith Class will
resume at 11:00 a.m. in Rm. #1. This class will continue our
review and study of The United States Catholic Catechism for
Adults. This class can also be joined at any time.

Opportunities at the Old Mission
Serenity Retreat with Fr. Tom Weston, SJ
January 28 -30, 2011
Here is an opportunity to spend a weekend with women
and men in recovery from alcoholism and addiction. Our
retreat is open to folks in AA, NA and Al-Anon. The retreat
will focus on the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous with time
for prayer and meditation. Fr. Tom Weston, SJ has been
involved in 12-Step Programs since 1976. He counsels,
conducts workshops and seminars and preaches retreats
internationally and often. This retreat begins with dinner
Friday at 6pm and ends with lunch on Sunday. Private single

 DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO…
Querida Familia Parroquial,
Este año, después de una de las Misas de Navidad, una niña
pequeña de alrededor de seis años de edad, vino corriendo
hacia mi: “Oiga”, me dijo, “yo me acuerdo de usted” “usted
es el que me bautizó” ¿Qué yo?, le dije, “¿Así que te acuer-
das de tu bautismo?” Ella asintió gustosamente. “¡Qué suerte
la tuya”!, le dije. Y así lo creía. “La mayoría de nosotros éra-
mos bebés bien pequeños cuando nos bautizaron”.
“Incluyéndome yo.” “Yo no recuerdo nada.”
Este fin de semana nuestra familia parroquial se une a nues-
tra familia de fe Cristiana al conmemorar y celebrar el Bautis-
mo del Señor. En el Evangelio de hoy de Mateo (3:13-17),
Jesús pide ser bautizado por las manos de Juan el Bautista.
En este momento sagrado, el cielo se abre, literalmente y en
la presencia del Padre y del Espíritu, la identidad de Jesús se
nos revela: “Este es mi Hijo, el Amado, éste es mi Elegido.”
Durante tres de nuestras liturgias nosotros celebramos los
bautismos de varios bebés, y niños—una forma maravillosa
para aquellos de nosotros que “no recordamos nada”, poda-
mos recordar y reclamar el momento de nuestro propio bau-
tismo en y a través de Cristo Jesús—el momento en el cual
nuestra identidad verdadera como hijos e hijas del Señor es
revelada a nosotros y a nuestra comunidad.
Este fin de semana sirve también como la culminación de la
estación tan corta de Navidad y en forma significativa tam-
bién como el heraldo de la Cuaresma y de la Pascua de Resu-
rrección. El mismo nos da la oportunidad de considerar en
una forma real y conciente, la importancia de las promesas
bautismales, las cuales para la mayoría de nosotros, fueron
recitadas por nuestros padrinos en nuestro nombre:
Celebrante: ¿Rechazas a Satanás?
Respuesta: Si, lo rechazo.
Celebrante: ¿Y todas sus obras?
Respuesta: Si, las rechazo.
Celebrante: ¿Crees en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso? Creador
del cielo y de la tierra?
Respuesta: Si creo.
Celebrante: ¿Crees en Cristo Jesús, Su Hijo Unico, nuestro
Señor, Que nació de la Virgen María, fue crucificado, murió
y fue enterrado, resucitó de entre los muertos, y está senta-
do a la derecha del Padre?
Respuesta: Si creo.
Celebrante: Crees en el Espíritu Santo, la santa Iglesia Cató-
lica, la comunión de los santos, el perdón de los pecados, la
resurrección del Cuerpo y la vida perdurable?
Respuesta: Si creo.

La renovación de estas promesas es una forma de hacer un
compromiso de nuestras vidas a Dios. Esta es la decisión más
importante que un ser humano puede hacer. Nosotros esta-
mos llamados a dar nuestra vida al Señor a decidir darle la
vida a El y no a nosotros mismos (2 Corintios 5:15). También
a responder a Su Amor total con nuestro amor.
En una nota diferente , muchas gracias a todos los que con-
tribuyeron tan generosamente en su tiempo, su talento y su
tesoro para hacer de las celebraciones de Adviento, de Nues-
tra Señora de Guadalupe y de Navidad unas tan maravillosas.
El año pasado me resultó problemático tratar de mencionar
los nombres de todos los envueltos en los servicios, inadver-
tidamente, dejé de mencionar algunos. Por eso, este año iré
a la segura. ¡Gracias a todos! ¡Gracias mil! ¡Dios les bendiga!

ENTRANDO A UN AÑO NUEVO
Es un año nuevo ya y muchos de nosotros estamos hacien-
do resoluciones. Nosotros mantendremos muchas de éstas
por un corto tiempo pero si los años anteriores son un buen
indicador, antes de la Pascua, nuestras resoluciones serán
solo buenas intenciones llevadas a un lado en las prisas de la
vida. En las próximas semanas muchos de ustedes recibirán
su carta anual de agradecimiento por parte de la parroquia
(ustedes saben, la que usan para su declaración de impues-
tos), y algunos de ustedes la miraran y dirán “Yo puedo hacer
más que eso.” Si tu quieres hacer una resolución de Año Nue-
vo con la probabilidad de un cien por ciento de éxito, intenta
ésto. “Yo resuelvo el regresar más de los regalos que Dios me
ha dado en una forma más regular.” Entonces llena una for-
ma del Traslado Electrónico de Fondos localizada en el Kiosco
en la entrada principal del Centro Serra, en la oficina parro-
quial o en la página de internet. Nosotros haremos el resto al
cumplir con tus deseos. Cuando el Año 2012 llegue tu verás
hacia atrás, a una resolución que mantuviste, tu te sentirás
bien por lo que has hecho, y el apoyo que le das a tu familia
parroquial será muy apreciado.
Gracias por todo lo que haces y que el Año 2011 sea uno
bendecido para ti y para tu familia.

AWARENESS WEEK
Jan.9-15, 2011
God calls us all to live our faith and seek out our vocation to become a deacon, priest, religious
sister, married or single person. Perhaps God is calling you to the priesthood or consecrated
life. Will you have the courage to follow your heart? We are all called to love and serve Him
and one another. As we continue to walk in the light of Christ and to serve our Lord with our
whole heart, mind and soul, may we be filled with the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
and seek to forgive all who have hurt us. National Vocation Awareness Week is a time for re-
flection. During the week of January 9th-15th, we encourage all Catholics to:
• Take time to pray for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.
• Reflect on our own vocation and strengthen our personal relationship with Christ.
• Educate our young people about the importance of silent prayer and taking the time to truly
• Listen to God's voice in our hearts.

LAS VOCACIONES
Enero 9-15, 2011
Dios nos llama a que todos vivamos nuestra fe y busquemos nuestra vocación ya sea siendo
diáconos, sacerdotes, religiosos, personas casadas o personas solteras. Tal vez Dios te está lla-
mando a ti al sacerdocio o a la vida consagrada. ¿Tendrás el valor de seguir tu corazón? Todos
somos llamados a servirle a El y a unos y otros. Al continuar caminando en la luz de Cristo y al
continuar sirviéndole al Señor con todo nuestro corazón, mente y alma, seremos llenados del
amor de nuestro Señor y de Jesucristo Salvador y buscaremos como perdonar a aquellos que
nos han herido. La Semana de Oración por las Vocaciones es un tiempo para reflexionar. Du-
rante la semana del 9-15 de enero, animamos a todos los católicos a:
• que tomen tiempo para orar por las vocaciones al sacerdocio y a la vida consagrada.
• reflexionar sobre su propia vocación y a fortalecer su relación personal con Cristo.
• educar a los jóvenes sobre la importancia de la oración en silencio y a hacer tiempo para
