MILD STEEL TRANSFORMER COOLING TUBES

1.0 GENERAL:

This specification governs the quality requirements of electric resistance welded mild steel
tubes of square, round and elliptical shapes.
The Information on this document is the property of BHARAT HEAVY ELECTRICALS LIMITED

2.0 APPLICATION: Cooling tubes for transformers.

It must not be used directly or Indirectly in any way detrimental to the Interest of the company.

3.0 CONDITION OF DELIVERY:

Tubes shall be supplied with rust preventive coating of varnish externally throughout the
length. Tubes shall be plugged at both ends to prevent ingress of moisture.

4.0 COMPLIANCE WITH NATIONAL STANDARDS:

COPYRIGHT AND CONFIDENTIAL

The material shall comply with the requirements of the following National standard and also
meet the requirements of this specification.

IS : 8036-1976, Gr.: ERW : Mild Steel Transformer Cooling Tubes

5.0 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES :

5.1 Sizes:

BHEL order shall clearly state the following particulars:

For round tubes : Outside diameter X Thickness
For elliptical tubes : Major axis X Minor axis X Thickness
For square tubes : Side of the square and tolerance on dimensions

Tubes shall be supplied in random lengths of 4 to 7 metres, unless exact lengths are called
for in BHEL order.

5.2 Tolerances:

5.2.1 Outside Diameter:

Round tubes : ± 0.50 mm

Elliptical tubes : ± 0.50 mm for tubes upto 50 mm
± 1.00 percent for tubes above 50 mm

5.2.2 Thickness:

Round and Elliptical tubes : ± 8percent

Square tubes : As specified in order/drawing
5.2.3 Length:

When exact lengths are called for, the tolerances shall be + 6mm, and - 0 mm of the specified
length.

5.2.4 Straightness:

Round tubes shall not deviate from the straight line by more than 1/600th of any length
measured at the centre of that length.
Square and Elliptical tubes shall not show permanent twist of more than 50 and shall not
deviate from straight line by more than 1/600th of any length measured at the centre of that
length along horizontal plane.

6.0 MANUFACTURE:
Tubes shall be made form tested quality steel manufactured by an approved process.

7.0 FREEDOM FOR DEFECTS :

Tubes shall be cleanly finished and reasonably free from scale. They shall be free from cracks,
surface flaws, laminations and internal and surface defects. The ends shall be cut cleanly and
square with the axis of the tube.

8.0 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION :

The material shall show not more than 0.06 percent, each of sulphur and phosphorus.

9.0 TEST SAMPLES:

Test samples shall be taken in accordance with IS:4711 as detailed below:

5 sample pieces shall be selected at random from a lot of 150 tubes for tests.

10.0 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES :

10.1 Tensile:

The tensile strength of strips cut form selected tubes, when tested in accordance with IS:1608
shall be as follows:
Tensile strength : 315 N/mm2 , min.
Elongation on 5.65 √ So gauge length : 20 percent, min.

10.2 Bend Test (For tubes upto and including 50mm Nominal bore):

When tested in accordance with IS:2329, the finished tubes shall be capable of withstanding
the bend test without showing any signs of fracture or failure. Tubes shall not be filled for this
test.

Round tubes shall be capable of being bent cold with the weld at 900 to the plane of bending,
through 1800 round a former having a radius, at the bottom of the groove in the plane of
bending equal to 6 times outside diameter of the tube.

Square and elliptical tubes shall be capable of being bent cold, with major axis in the plane of
bending through 1800 around a former having a radius at the bottom of groove equal to 4 times
the outside diameter of major axis of the tube.

11.0 HYDRAULIC TEST:

Each tube shall be hydraulically tested at the manufacturer’s works.

Unless otherwise agreed to each round tube shall withstand a test pressure of 490 N/cm2
Without showing defects of any kind. The pressure shall be maintained for 5 minutes for proof
and inspection.

Unless otherwise agreed to each square and elliptical tube shall be tested by immersing the
tube in a tank containing water (in which an emulsion oil is added to avoid rusting of tubes)
and passing air from the tube at a test pressure of 69 N/mm2. The tubes shall not show defects
of any kind. The weld shall be placed facing upwards and leakage through the water producing
either visible water displacement or minute bubbles escaping from the weld interface is not
permissible. The pressure shall be maintained at least for 30 seconds for this purpose.

12.0 TEST CERTIFICATES :

Three copies of test certificates shall be supplied, unless otherwise stated on the order.
In addition, to the above, the supplier shall ensure to enclose one copy of the test certificate
along with their despatch documents to facilitate quick clearance of the material.
The test certificate shall bear the following information:
