Relationship between Abortion Concept and Feminism Ideology

Feminism was born due to the ethical opposition to the abuse of human rights, which

included women's oppression in all aspects of life. Termination of the women's pregnancy or

abortion is one of the elements of life where the women's oppression is felt both in the past and

the current society. Feminism has been considered of importance and in operation in the

communities for less than 250 years. In the academic field, feminism has lasted for less than fifty

years, but currently, it has gained support, and it has built strong roots in today’s society.

The feminist ethics attempts to improve, think back, and redevelop the conventional ethics

that does not consider the interests of women and their rights. These ethics of feminism are

practiced in different sectors, which include; applied care, discourse, and autonomy ethics

(Friedman & Bolte, 2007). In healthcare, medicine deals with women and men differently as

they vary in psychology, physiology, and other aspects. Ethics in healthcare deals with female-

specific conditions like; breast cancer, menopause, pregnancy, and the fact that access of women

to healthcare is more laborious than men (ÇEVLİKLİ, 2017).

Termination of pregnancy is frequently performed in the gynecology field. In the past,

invasive methods were used for doing an abortion, but since the 1980s, there have been medical,

physiological procedures that help in performing abortions. Despite that, all parts of the world

use almost the same methods; each country has laws and regulations that inhibit this practice.

The abortion was considered illegal in the 1960s if the life of the mother during pregnancy was

in danger in each country of the world (ÇEVLİKLİ, 2017). The law did not approve other

reasons. However, after these years, some of the world countries started to mitigate their

restrictions on abortion because of different causes such as Roe and Wade (Zucker et al.,. 2007).

A study done by Berat tried to explain pregnancy termination and feminist ethics. He used

books and texts from a personal library, Library of Marmara University Faculty of Medicine.

The study was by the revisionary texts stance. The study concludes that feminism has gained a

constructive attitude and support recently. He also mentions that feminism views should be

voiced more; the intellectual content of the feminism should be improved and should be taken

seriously.

He studied the abortion concept debates dwelling on the prima facie item. There are two

clashes on ethically distinct concepts that are witnessed from this. The arguments are between

“The autonomy of mother” and “the right to life of foetus” (ÇEVLİKLİ, 2017). Of the two

clashes, feminism seems to favor the autonomy of the mother to be superior to the right to life of

the foetus. The feminists also acknowledge the mother's decision on the fate of her pregnancy.

‘Pro-life” and “pro-choice” seemed to explain these ideas about the termination of pregnancy.
