TECHNOLOGY

ASSIGNMENT 1 50 marks (10%)

A softcopy of the assignment should be submitted to me at

nazatulshima@unikl.edu.my before the dateline on May 8, 2020 (12:00pm)

Instructions

(1) This is a group assignment (4 to 5 persons per group).

(2) Prepare your answers for Question 1 to 4 on A4 paper.
(3) Include relevant MINITAB output for each question.
(4) Except for the output, the answer for each question should be hand written.
(5) Number your answers accordingly.
(6) Only one submission needed for each group.

Question 1

The quantity of milk in a bottle may be assumed to have a normal distribution. A

random sample of 16 bottles was taken and the quantity of milk was measured,
with the following results, in ml.

1005, 1003, 998, 1001, 1002, 999, 1000, 1001,

1007, 1003, 1010, 1001, 1003, 1002, 1005, 995

Perform the analysis in MINITAB. Attach the output and from the output;

(a) Determine a 90% confidence interval for the mean quantity of milk in a
bottle.
(b) Test at 5% significance level whether the mean quantity of milk is at least
950ml.

Question 2

Tests of product quality using inspectors can lead to serious error problems.
Benson and Ohta (1986) evaluated the performance of inspectors in a new
company using novice and experienced inspectors. Each inspector classified 200
products as defective or non defective. The number of errors is shown as follows:

Novice Experienced
25 35 26 40 46 20 31 15 25 19 28 17
45 31 33 29 21 49 19 18 24 10 20 21

(a) Test the difference between using novice and experienced inspectors.
Use α = 0.01 and assume unequal variances.

(i) Include a relevant MINITAB output.

(5 marks)
(ii) By referring to the output, conclude the hypothesis of the difference
between using novice and experienced inspectors. Follow the step
by step flow of hypothesis testing.
(5 marks)

(b) Test the difference between using novice and experienced inspectors.
Use α = 0.05 and assume equal variances.

(i) Include a relevant MINITAB output.

(5 marks)

(ii) By referring to the output, conclude the hypothesis of the difference

between using novice and experienced inspectors. Follow the step
by step flow of hypothesis testing.

Question 3

The Table below shows a comparison of two methods (Karlsruhe and Lehigh
procedures) for predicting the shear strength for steel plate girders. The
procedures were applied to five specific girders.

Karlsruhe Lehigh
Girder
Method Method
1 1.186 1.061
2 1.151 0.992
3 1.322 1.063
4 1.339 1.062
5 1.200 1.065

Perform the analysis in MINITAB. Attach the output and from the output;

(a) Determine a 90% confidence interval of difference between the two

methods.
(b) Test at 1% significance level whether the two methods are different.
(10 marks)

Question 4

The following data give uric acid levels (in milligrams per 100 milliliters) for 5
subjects before and after a special diet.
Subject Before After
1 5.2 5.2
2 6.3 6.2
3 6.4 6.3
4 5.5 5.6
5 5.9 5.6

3
CLB 20903 JANUARY 2020

Perform the analysis in MINITAB. Attach the output and from the output;

(a) Test the hypothesis that the diet reduces the uric acid level, using 5%
significance level.

(b) Construct a 99% confidence interval on the mean difference in the uric
acid levels.
