2.1 Safety Precautions when Working on

Vehicle
Pay Attention to the Following to Prevent Personal Injury and Ve‐
hicle Damage:
WARNING
Risk of injury and accident by accidentally engaging a selector

lever position with the engine running.

♦ Shift the transmission into “P” and press the parking brake
button to lock the electro-mechanical parking brake before
working on a running engine.
Danger of poisonous exhaust gas with the engine running.
♦ When engine is running, an exhaust extracting system
must always be connected to the exhaust system.
Risk of injury through the radiator fan turning on automatically.
♦ Disconnect the connectors before working near the fan
shroud.
To Prevent Personal Injury, Damage or Destruction of Electrical

and Electronic Components, Observe the Following:
♦ Only connect and disconnect test equipment when the ignition
is off.
Caution
Risk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting

the battery.
♦ Follow the steps when disconnecting the battery.
♦ Only disconnect the battery when the ignition is turned off.

2.2 Safety Precautions when Working on

Vehicles with Start/Stop System
Pay Attention to the Following When Working on Vehicles with a
Stop/Start System:
WARNING
Risk of injury if the engine starts automatically in vehicles with

a Start/Stop System.
♦ For vehicles with an activated Start/Stop System (recog‐
nizable from a notification in the instrument cluster), the
engine can be started automatically if needed.
♦ Make sure the Start/Stop system is deactivated when
working on the vehicle (turn off ignition and turn the ignition
back on if needed).
2.3 Safety Precautions during Road Test

with Testing Equipment

If Testing Equipment Must Be Used during a Road Test, Observe
the Following: permitted unless authorised by AUDI AG. AUDI AG does not guarantee or accept any liability
WARNING
There is a risk of an accident due to distractions and improperly

secured testing equipment.
The front passenger airbag poses a risk if it deploys during an
accident.
• Operating testing equipment while driving is a distraction.
• Testing equipment that is not secured properly increases
the risk of personal injury.
♦ Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible.
♦ Only use the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester .
♦ Testing equipment -1- must lie flat on the passenger's
thighs and be operated by that person, as shown in the
illustration.
2.4 Safety Precautions when Tow Starting

and Towing
Caution
Risk of destroying the transmission.

♦ When towing the vehicle, move the selector lever into “N”
when the ignition is turned on. Do not tow the vehicle far‐
ther than 50 km (31 miles) and do not drive faster than 50
km/h (31 mph).

The engine cannot be tow started, for example, if the battery is

too weak or if the starter is not working.

3.1 Guidelines for Clean Working Condi‐

♦ Thoroughly clean the connection points and the surrounding
area before loosening.
♦ Clean the transmission and transmission components using
Cleaning Solution - D 009 401 04- .
♦ Use lint-free cloths when cleaning, for example, the “WYPALL
X70/WORKHORSE” cloth made by Kimberly-Clark Professio‐

♦ Seal all open lines and connections immediately with clean
plugs or caps from the Engine Bung Set - VAS6122- .
♦ Place the removed parts on a clean surface and cover them.
Use foil or lint-free cloths.
♦ Carefully cover or seal opened components if the repair will
not be done immediately.
♦ Only install clean parts: remove the replacement parts from
their packaging just before installing them.
♦ Protect the disconnected connectors from dirt and moisture
and only connect when they are dry.
3.2 General Information

Transmission
♦ The dual mass flywheel transfers the engine torque to the
double clutch. dual mass flywheel and dual clutch entrance
hub are connected to each other via the splines.
♦ The seven gear S tronic, in the three shaft layout design, is
less than 60 centimeters long. Two clutch plates that are posi‐
tioned behind each other operate two sub-transmissions
which are independent from each other. The direct shift pro‐
cedure occurs due to the alternate opening and closing of the
clutches.
♦ Both clutches are

Selector Mechanism
The selector lever positions and shifts are transmitted via a sep‐
arate control module in the selector mechanism to the transmis‐
sion control module via the CAN bus. Shifting occurs without a
cable.
ATF and Gear Oil
The 7 spread S tronic transmission and the rear final drive have
the same ATF-filling.

Caution
Risk of front final drive or the Haldex clutch malfunctioning or

failing.
♦ Only the ATF for the dual-clutch transmission 0BZ that is
available as a replacement part may be used. Refer to the
Parts Catalog.
♦ Using other ATFs can cause malfunctions or transmission
failure.
Haldex Clutch Oil and Gear Oil

The front final drive and Haldex clutch have separate oil circuits.
Caution
Risk of malfunction or failure of the front final drive or the Hal‐

dex clutch.
♦ Only axle oil for multitronic which can be obtained as a

replacement part must be used for the front final drive.

♦ Only the high-performance Haldex clutch oil available as
a replacement part may be used for the Haldex clutch.
Refer to the Parts Catalog.
♦ Other oils can cause the front final drive or the Haldex
clutch to malfunction or fail.
3.3 General Repair Information

♦ The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that
function properly are required to ensure a proper and suc‐
cessful transmission repair. Of course the general safety pre‐
cautions also apply when carrying out repair work.
♦ Some general repair information that applies to several pro‐
cedures throughout this manual is summarized here. They
apply to this repair manual.
Guided Fault Finding, OBD and Test Instruments
♦ Try to determine the exact cause of the fault using the Vehicle
Diagnostic Tester before performing repair work on the trans‐
mission.
Special Tools
For a complete list of special tools used in the repair manual. Re‐
fer to Workshop Equipment and Special Tools.
Oil, Environmental and Disposal Regulations
♦ Handle ATF, gear oil and other fluids with care.
♦ Dispose of drained fluid properly.
♦ Follow the legal, environmental, and disposal regulations.
♦ Follow the instructions listed on the fluid packaging.
Transmission
♦ Do not run engine or tow the vehicle when the ATF oil pan is
removed or when there is no ATF.

♦ Thoroughly clean the connection points and the surrounding

♦ During installation, make sure the alignment sleeves are fitted
correctly.
O-Rings, Gaskets and Seals
♦ O-rings, gaskets and seals must always be replaced.
♦ After removing the seals, examine the contact surface on the
housing or shaft for burrs resulting from removal or for other
signs of damage.
♦ Thoroughly clean the housing separating surfaces before as‐
sembling.
♦ Always replace paper gaskets, completely remove an old seal
and thoroughly clean the sealing surfaces.
♦ Coat O-rings with transmission fluid or Vaseline before insert‐
ing to prevent crushing rings during installation.
♦ Never use anyunless

♦ The open side of the gaskets point toward the fluid to be sealed
in.
♦ When installing the new shaft seal, make sure the sealing lip
does not run on the same point as the sealing lip from the old
seal (use offset tolerance).
♦ Follow the guidelines for clean working conditions. Refer to
⇒ “3.1 Guidelines for Clean Working Conditions”, page 5 .
Sealant
♦ Thoroughly clean housing joint surfaces before applying the
sealant.
♦ Apply sealant evenly and not too thick.
♦ Sealant must not go into the bleed holes.
Circlips
♦ Do not stretch the circlips.
♦ Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
♦ The circlips must rest at the bottom of the groove.
Bolts and Nuts
♦ Loosen the bolts opposite the tightening sequence.
♦ Bolts or nuts for securing covers and housings should be loos‐
ened and tightened diagonally in stages if no tightening se‐
quence is specified.
♦ Replace the self-locking nuts.
♦ Use a wire brush to clean the threads of the bolts that were
installed with locking fluid. Then insert the bolts with Locking
Fluid - AMV 185 101 A1- .
♦ The tightening specifications given apply to unoiled bolts and
nuts.

– Install the -VAS871015- .
Note
The -VAS6413- is not needed when working in the engine com‐

partment.

Contact corrosion can occur if inadequate fasteners (bolts, nuts,
washers, etc.) are used.
For this reason, only fasteners with a special surface coating may
be installed.
Furthermore, all rubber or plastic and adhesive are made of non-
conductive materials.
If there are doubts about whether parts can be used or not, use
new parts. Refer to the Parts Catalog.

3.6 Wire Routing and Securing

♦ Mark for example the individual fuel, and vacuum lines for the
EVAP canister system as well as the electrical wires before
disconnecting and/or removing them. This will prevent a mix-
up when reconnecting them. If necessary, draw sketches or
take pictures.
♦ Due to the limited space inside the engine compartment, be
especially careful when working near moving or hot parts to
avoid damaging the lines.

Removing
• The transmission is removed and mounted to the engine/
transmission holder. Refer to

– Remove the bolts -1 to 7-.
– Turn the transmission in the -VAS6095A- so that it is vertical.

Depending on the version the driver bolts must be slightly loos‐

ened, to that the Dual Clutch Attachment Bracket - T40289- can
be used.
– Position the -T40289- on the driver with the dual clutch.

– Install the -T40289/1- in the -T40289- .
– Check the attachment for secure fit in the driver.
– Engage the -T40289- on the -VAS6100- .
– Carefully remove the dual clutch out of the transmission hous‐
ing.
– Lay the dual clutch and cover on a soft surface so that the drive

wheel -arrow A- for the oil pump does not get damaged.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

Replace the O-ring -arrow B-.
– Clean the sealing surface on the clutch cover -arrow C-.
– Turn the rectangular rings -arrows- on the clutch system and

check for ease of movement and axial play.
Note
If the rectangular rings do not move easily, then the dual clutch
must not be installed.

– Clean the transmission housing around the dual clutch and the
sealing surface -arrow-.
Note
Make sure no dirt can fall into the transmission while cleaning.
– Install the -T40199- in the threaded holes in the transmission

housing.
– Install the dual clutch into the transmission housing. Using

short lifting/turning motions, allow the input shaft to engage
into the auxiliary hydraulic splines and transmission shaft.
• The dual clutch is installed correctly when the clutch cover O-
ring noticeably contacts the edge of the transmission housing.

hicle speed greater than 3 km/h.
– Engage the “N” position. Then without pressing the release
button -2- and brake, select the selector lever position “D”.
It must be possible.
Test step 2.2
• Engine running, selector lever position “D” engaged and ve‐
hicle speed less than 3km/h.
– Engage the selector lever position “N” for at least one second,
do not press the foot brake and press the release button -2-.
Positions “R” and “D” must not be engaged.

• Engine running, selector lever position “N” engaged and ve‐

The respective selector lever position must be significantly
brighter than the other drive gear symbols.

light up in a white as a function lamp.
The P symbol in the Selector Lever Transmission Range Dis‐

Both the selector lever handle and the selector lever boot are re‐

• Ignition switched off.
– Remove the upper section -1- of the selector lever handle up‐
ward in direction of -arrows-.
– Carefully pry out the selector lever boot on the side using the
-3409- in direction of -arrow-.
– Remove the bolt -2-.
– Remove the lower section -1- of the selector lever handle up‐
ward.

Installing
– Check the lower selector lever handle -arrows- on the upper
section -1- that the selector lever handle is seated correctly
and if necessary press in farther.
– Install the upper section on the lower section.
– Clip in the selector lever boot on the Selector Lever Trans‐
mission Range Display - Y5- .

– Push the selector lever boot on the selector lever handle until
it clicks into place.
• The tab -2- on the selector lever boot must engage in the
opening -1- in the selector lever handle -arrow-.

1.6 Emergency Release from P

Procedure
Note
It is necessary to check the parking lock emergency release after

performing any work on it or after removing and installing the
transmission.
WARNING
The vehicle could start to roll and cause an accident.

♦ Pull the parking brake button to activate the electro-me‐
chanical parking brake.

– Open the lid for the rear center console storage compartment.
– Remove the liner mat.
– Remove the bolt -1- and remove the cover -2-.
– Remove the release lever -1- from the vehicle tool kit and fold
the operating lever 90° in direction of -arrow-.

– Insert the release tool -1- in the mount -2- for the emergency
release until it engages in direction of -arrow A-.
– Pivot the release lever toward the rear until it stops in direction
of -arrow B-.
• Release the parking lock.
Note
♦ The release tool cannot be removed in this position.

♦ When the parking lock is emergency released, the “N” mode
is displayed in the instrument cluster.
♦ Additionally the following message is shown in the instrument
cluster: “Danger of rolling away! P is not possible. Set the
parking brake”.
Resetting the Release

– To lock the parking lock pivot the release lever back and re‐
move the mount for the emergency release.

the parking lock using the -80-200- .

– Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise in direction of -arrow-

and disconnect the connector -1- from the transmission.
– Free up the wiring harness on the transmission.

– Pivot the left and right tab -1- toward the front.

– Secure the engine with the -T10038- at the same time pay
attention to the clearance to the fuel hose -1-.

– Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -1 to 9-.

the transmission and fill the transmission with ATF.
– To check if the transmission is sufficiently filled, disconnect the
quick-release coupling on -VAS6262A- at regular intervals and
seal the hose with a finger or a clean plug.
• The collected ATF runs out of the overflow tube -arrow 2-.

♦ Some ATF always leaks out when opening the drain and check
plug -arrow 1-, regardless of the ATF level.
♦ Do not reuse ATF that was drained.
♦ While filling the ATF the ATF temperature is checked. Refer

– Remove the bolts -1 to 12-.
– Carefully pry off the parking lock mechanical component -A-
and the electronic/hydraulic component -B- alternating from
side to side from the alignment pins.

– Remove the ATF from the alignment pin holes -arrows- and
from the threaded holes.
– Install the new O-ring -1-.
– Check if the alignment pins are inserted in the corresponding
parking lock holes.
Note
Before inserting the mechanical and the electronic/hydraulic com‐

ponents of the parking lock must be assembled.
Caution
During the following steps and especially for inserting the park‐
ing lock later pay attention that:

♦ The sensor block tongue must always be place in the
grove on the electronic/hydraulic parking lock component
in direction of -arrow A-.
– Lift the locking latch -1- in direction of -arrow B- and push the
parking lock pins -2- in the mechanical component of the park‐
ing lock.
– Assemble the mechanical and electronic/hydraulic compo‐

nents of the parking lock.
• The holes on the electronic component -1- must align with the
holes on the mechanical component -2- -arrows-.

• The parking lock pins -1- must engage in the groove -2- on the

• The alignment pins must engage in the transmission housing

sion housing until stop, if required, »knock« lightly with a
rubber hammer.
– Tighten the bolts for parking lock the electronic/hydraulic com‐

– Turn the engine on the engine and transmission holder in the
45°- position, so that the final drive cover points upward at an
angle.

Pay attention that ATF does not drip out of the bleed hole.
Caution
There is a risk of destroying the differential.

♦ When removing the final drive cover, make sure the dif‐
ferential does not fall out.
♦ If the left flange shaft will also be removed, the differential
will no longer have a guide and must be removed.
♦ Do not install a differential that has fallen onto the floor.
– Remove the bolts -arrows- and the final drive cover with the
right flange shaft.

this manual, we suggest you leave such repairs to an authorized Audi retailer or other qualified
shop. We especially urge you to consult an authorized Audi retailer before beginning repairs on
any vehicle that may still be covered wholly or in part by any of the extensive warranties issued by
Audi.
•= Disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap)whenever you work on the fuel system or
the electrical system. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Keep an approved
fire extinguisher handy.
•= Audi is constantly improving its vehicles and sometimes these changes, both in parts and
specifications, are made applicable to earlier models. Therefore, part numbers listed in this
manual are for reference only. Always check with your authorized Audi retailer parts department

•= Any time the battery has been disconnected on an automatic transmission vehicle, it will be
necessary to reestablish Transmission Control Module (TCM) basic settings using the VAG 1551
Scan Tool (ST).
•= Never work under a lifted vehicle unless it is solidly supported on stands designed for the purpose.
Do not support a vehicle on cinder blocks, hollow tiles or other props that may crumble under
continuous load. Never work under a vehicle that is supported solely by a jack. Never work under
the vehicle while the engine is running.

•= Always observe good workshop practices. Wear goggles when you operate machine tools or work
with acid. Wear goggles, gloves and other protective clothing whenever the job requires working
with harmful substances.
•= Tie long hair behind your head. Do not wear a necktie, a scarf, loose clothing, or a necklace when
you work near machine tools or running engines. If your hair, clothing, or jewelry were to get
caught in the machinery, severe injury could result.

Cautions & Warnings
•= Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Some fasteners are
designed to be used only once and are unreliable and may fail if used a second time. This
includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow the
recommendations in this manual - replace these fasteners with new parts where indicated, and
any other time it is deemed necessary by inspection.
•= Illuminate the work area adequately but safely. Use a portable safety light for working inside or
under the vehicle. Make sure the bulb is enclosed by a wire cage. The hot filament of an
accidentally broken bulb can ignite spilled fuel or oil.
•= Friction materials such as brake pads and clutch discs may contain asbestos fibers. Do not create
dust by grinding, sanding, or by cleaning with compressed air. Avoid breathing asbestos fibers and
asbestos dust. Breathing asbestos can cause serious diseases such as asbestosis or cancer, and
may result in death.
•= Finger rings should be removed so that they cannot cause electrical shorts, get caught in running
machinery, or be crushed by heavy parts.
•= Before starting a job, make certain that you have all the necessary tools and parts on hand. Read

all the instructions thoroughly, do not attempt shortcuts. Use tools that are appropriate to the work
and use only replacement parts meeting Audi specifications. Makeshift tools, parts and
procedures will not make good repairs.
•= Catch draining fuel, oil or brake fluid in suitable containers. Do not use empty food or beverage
containers that might mislead someone into drinking from them. Store flammable fluids away from
fire hazards. Wipe up spills at once, but do not store the oily rags, which can ignite and burn
spontaneously.
•= Use pneumatic and electric tools only to loosen threaded parts and fasteners. Never use these
tools to tighten fasteners, especially on light alloy parts. Always use a torque wrench to tighten
fasteners to the tightening torque listed.
•= Keep sparks, lighted matches, and open flame away from the top of the battery. If escaping
hydrogen gas is ignited, it will ignite gas trapped in the cells and cause the battery to explode.
•= Be mindful of the environment and ecology. Before you drain the crankcase, find out the proper
way to dispose of the oil. Do not pour oil onto the ground, down a drain, or into a stream, pond, or
lake. Consult local ordinances that govern the disposal of wastes.
•= The air-conditioning (A/C) system is filled with a chemical refrigerant that is hazardous. The A/C
system should be serviced only by trained automotive service technicians using approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, trained in related safety precautions, and familiar with
regulations

•= Before doing any electrical welding on vehicles equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), disconnect
the battery negative terminal (ground strap) and the ABS control module connector.
•= Do not expose any part of the A/C system to high temperatures such as open flame. Excessive
heat will increase system pressure and may cause the system to burst.

•= When boost-charging the battery, first remove the fuses for the Engine Control Module (ECM), the
Transmission Control Module (TCM), the ABS control module, and the trip computer. In cases
where one or more of these components is not separately fused, disconnect the control module
connector(s).
•= Some of the vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a supplemental restraint system
(SRS), that automatically deploys an airbag in the event of a frontal impact. The airbag is operated
by an explosive device. Handled improperly or without adequate safeguards, it can be accidentally
activated and cause serious personal injury. To guard against personal injury or airbag system
failure, only trained Audi Service technicians should test, disassemble or service the airbag
system.
•= Do not quick-charge the battery (for boost starting) for longer than one minute, and do not exceed
16.5 volts at the battery with the boosting cables attached. Wait at least one minute before
boosting the battery a second time.
•= Never use a test light to conduct electrical tests of the airbag system. The system must only be
tested by trained Audi Service technicians using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) or an approved
equivalent. The airbag unit must never be electrically tested while it is not installed in the vehicle.

•= Some aerosol tire inflators are highly flammable. Be extremely cautious when repairing a tire that
may have been inflated using an aerosol tire inflator. Keep sparks, open flame or other sources of
ignition away from the tire repair area. Inflate and deflate the tire at least four times before
breaking the bead from the rim. Completely remove the tire from the rim before attempting any
repair. Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not
•= When driving or riding in an airbag-equipped vehicle, never hold test equipment in your hands or
lap while the vehicle is in motion. Objects between you and the airbag can increase the risk of
injury in an accident.
