DEMONSTRATE WORK VALUES

Defining the purpose of work

The purpose of work is:
 To lead one’s own life
 To engage in work
 To contribute one’s responsibility for his/her family, society and the people of the country at
large
Work Value Concepts

A value is a principal or standard that is held in high esteem by an individual and is related to all
aspects of one's personal and work life. You may have values around family, work, spiritual, leisure,
personal, etc.

The generalized categories of work values are shown below:

1. Intrinsic or Self Actualization Values - directly express openness to change values-the pursuit of
autonomy, interest, growth, and creativity in work.

2. Extrinsic or Security or Material Values - express conservation values; job security and income
provide workers with the requirements needed for general security and maintenance of order in their
lives.

3. Social or Relational Values - express the pursuit of self-transcendence values; work is seen as a
vehicle for positive social relations and contribution to society. Values include being helpful,
responsible, affiliation to friends and the community, social justice, and environmental protection.

Good Work Ethic: What you need to know

Work Ethic is a collection of values and behaviours that most employers feel are moral and
appropriate for the work place. A strong work ethic will clearly set you apart from the
crowd.

Some of these values and behaviours are:

 Attendance

 Teamwork

 Attitude

 Organizational Skills

 Appearance

 Productivity

2
 Initiative

 Honesty

 Respect

Let’s review how each of these values and behaviours play an important role in the
workplace.

1. Attendance: If workers are absent or don’t show-up on-time, productions schedules

are in jeopardy; and customer satisfaction is at risk. It is impossible to run a
successful production operation if workers cannot be counted on to be at their
workstations as committed. The lack of this work ethic quality is a certain path to
termination.

2. Teamwork: You are part of a team. When you are a team player, this encourages and
facilitates cooperation, pride, trust, and group identity between you and your peers. It
also suggests that you are cooperative and genuinely interested in achieving the goals
of the group.

3. Attitude: Often characterized as the single most important personal attribute.

Displaying a positive can-do, will-do, want-to-do attitude makes you a pleasant
person to be around, motivates your superiors to invest in your professional
development and improves your probability of advancements. This, coupled with
being a team-player, is a powerful performance attribute.

4. Organizational Skills Staying organized helps you prioritize tasks and manage your
time wisely & efficiently. Good organizational skills send a clear message to your
superiors that you possess one of the clear and essential tenets of a good future
manager.

5. Appearance: Personal hygiene and neat appearance are important because they
project who you are and how you carry yourself. In the workforce, it is always
important to maintain professionalism and adhere to the company dress code rules.

6. Productivity: is getting more out of the same amount of time, or dollars spent. Being
productive is vital for your growth as well as the betterment of the company you work
for. When an employee is productive, he/she maximizes company time, money and
resources. If you want to be noticed by your employer, then you must stay on task
and be as productive as possible.

7. Initiative: is the ability to assess and initiate (or do) things independently. This one
work-ethic quality will make you attractive in any production environment. Certainly
there are things that you should not do until directed to by your supervisor. But there
are a host of common sense things that, if you take the initiative to do them, will set
you apart from the pack. The key is to use your head, yet don’t be afraid to be
assertive.
3
8. Honesty: To be honest is to be trusted. A job should be done without cheating,
stealing or lying.

9. Respect: Treating people with courtesy, dignity and respect is essential at all times.
Always treat others the way you would want to be treated.

Remember, work ethic is a clear picture of your moral and behavioural values. If you want
to leave a good lasting impression, put good work ethic to practice. Not only will it make
you feel good about yourself, but it may get you noticed by your employer.

Prevention & reporting of unethical conducts

It is sad truth that the employees of just about every work, in every work, will occasionally encounter
team members who are taking part in unethical behaviours. Such unethical behaviours include a wide
variety of different activities. Among the most common unethical work behaviours of employees are
making long-distance calls, let coming, non-punctuality, falsifying the number of hours worked, or
much more serious and illegal practices, such as embezzling money from the falsified numbers of
hours etc.

 There are several techniques that allow for the management to decide on unethical activities.

 The first step is to create a company policy, in writing, that is read and signed by each
employee. This erases most feelings of ambiguity when it comes to deciding what to do
after witnessing an unethical behaviour.

 The second is to give a clear outline of what is expected of the person who has discovered
the unethical behaviour. It should include the person who should be contacted, and how to
go about doing it. With clear instructions, there will be less hesitation in reporting unethical
activities, and then they can be dealt with quickly and relatively easily, before they develop
into overwhelming issues.
The Unethical conduct can bee reported by any members of Organization as follows:

 Employees shall report any suspected illegal or unethical conduct connected with the
business of your organization. The following summarizes a sample’s Reporting of Illegal
or Unethical Conduct Policy:
 Any employee who observes any activity which he or she believes is illegal or unethical shall
advise his or her supervisor and the appropriate controlling department.

 If a supervisor receives such a report, the supervisor must promptly advise the Internal
Auditing Department, Human Resources Department, the Law Organization or the Business
Integrity Office.

 The Internal Auditing Department, Human Resources Department or the Law Organization
shall investigate the allegations promptly and take necessary and appropriate action.

 If requested by the employee source, the organization will treat the employee’s identity and
the alleged illegal or unethical conduct as strictly confidential information

 No employee shall be discharged, disciplined, or otherwise disadvantaged in his or her career

or suffer any other form of reprisal as a result of having reported in good faith suspected
illegal or unethical conduct by others under this policy.

5
Furthermore, the repercussions of unethical behaviours should be clearly stated. This way, both the
person doing the activity, and the witness to the activity will be well aware of the way that things will
be dealt with, and there won't be any risk of someone not reporting unethical behaviour because
they're afraid that the culprit will be unfairly treated. Communication is key in the proper management
of unethical behaviour in today’s workplace.
