species
· aerosol · The amount of · wildlife
carbon · pesticides
· Animal welfare · greenhouse
monoxide
· protected animal effect
· Battery hen (CO2)
· rain forest
1. In my opinion, more research should be carried out.
2. I believe that dangerous pesticides should be banned.
3. In my view, people should recycle paper/glass.
4. I’m quite optimistic about the future: people are now more aware of the importance of the environment.
5. I’m rather pessimistic: cars stuck in traffic jams send their exhausted fumes up into the atmosphere.
6. We need a public transport system with subsidised fares.
7. Farmers have to spray pesticides on their crops, but these chemicals could get into the food chain.
8. That result in a dramatic increase in the number of people affected by cancer and various allergies.
9. The most dangerous threat to the environment is nuclear waste from power stations. Can it really be
stored safely?
10. By developing sources of energy, such as wind, solar and wave power, we can make our world much
safer to life in.
11. Everyone agrees that environment must be protected.
12. Many factories break the anti-pollution laws and get away with it.
13. More people in cities should take up cycling instead of using cars.
14. Most governments seem to just put off dealing with environment problems.
15. In some countries, environmental organisations have been set up to inform people and gain their
support.
16. Unless we face up to the problem, many animals could became extinct.
17. Quite soon, the world is going to run out of energy resources.
18. Smoking has been banned (made illegal) in public places in some countries.
19. Our local lake has been polluted by nearby factories: it’s an ecological disaster.
20. We must conserve energy.
21. Is important to plant more trees and use the litter bins.
22. Human activity has harmful effects on the environment
23. The ozone layer has a hole in some parts
24. Greens are groups of people whose aim is conservation/protection of natural world
25. Dumping (throwing away)industrial waste in seas and river is a cause of damage
26. Some aerosol cans contain CFCs which can damage the ozone layer
27. Greenpeace stormed (protesto) an incineration ship in the North Sea
28. Pollutants are substances which can damage the environment when release into it
29. Industrial employers now have to provide ear-protectors against noise pollution for their workers
30. The condor will be extinct
31. The process of burning wastes is known as incineration
32. The stone decorations on some historic buildings have been dissolved by acid rain (rain that has
absorbed pollution)
33. Petrol engines pump a number of harmful gases into the atmosphere at street level where they are
inhaled by people
34. Two Greenpeace campaigners displayed a banner in Central London
35. The damage to the ozone layer is caused by a group of chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons or
CFCs
36. When buying a canister (bote) look to see if it has an ozone friendly sticker (pegatina)
37. Afforestation is the conversion of bare or cultivated land into forest.
38. Deforestation is the loss of tropical forests due to collection of fuelwood, commercial logging, shifting
cultivation, grazing, road construction, ranching, mining and fire. Leads to soil erosion and flooding
and endangers wildlife through habitat destruction.
39. Desertification is a process whereby the productivity of the land is reduced through deforestation,
waterlogging and salinization, chemical degradation and soil erosion
40. Ecosystem is the interacting system of a biological community and its non-living environment.
41. Erosion is the loss of surface soil through the action of precipitation and wind.
42. Habitat is the sum total of environmental conditions of a specific place that is occupied by an organism, a
population or a community.
43. Conventional materials that have been contaminated with radiation. In the United States, radioactive
wastes are not classified as hazardous, but are controlled by various specific government
regulations.
44. Reforestation is the replanting of cut or bare forest.
45. Toxic metals often are called heavy metals because most are high density metallic elements such as
mercury, chromium, cadmium, arsenic and lead, which are generally toxic to plant and animal life in
low concentrations.

46. Natural disasters

47. The volcano was dormant for years and suddenly, exploded
48. Some years ago, there was an important flooding in my country. A lot of buildings were damaged and
several people died and many other were injured or lost their property.
49. The eruption consists in hot ash and gas exploding outwards
50. It was an earthquake of 6.8 on the Richter Scale. The ground shook for a while.
51. The number of casualties (dead and injured people) is large
52. If water supplies are affected there is an outbreak of disease, called an epidemic
53. Forest fire raged out of control and the farmland was devastated
54. If a country has no rain for a long time, this dry period is called drought (shortage of water), and in some
countries this can lead to a period of famine. People can starve (die of hunger).
55. When it rains very heavily and the land is under water, this is called a flood
56. The climbers were stranded on the freezing mountain and were in danger of suffering from frostbite
