Examples of why we need bridge bearings

• Thermal Movement
• Restraint
• Articulation Management
• Uplift

Free sliding

Reasons to replace bridge bearings

• Wear / end of design life

• Corrosion of sliding surfaces
• Mis-understanding of structural articulation/restraint
• Incorrect installation
• Undermined by maintenance works/ support material deterioration
• Change of use, e.g. footbridge to tram
• Specification / original design errors, e.g. uplift.
• Planned maintenance works

Bridge Impact
Considerations when filling out bearing
schedules EN1337 / BS5400
• Loads may differ between
permanent/temporary bearings
• Will HB type vehicles be allowed
over the structure during bearing
replacement?
• Often find that loads are
incorrect or contact stress is
exceeded.
• Will the proposed bearings
actually fit in the available
space….or when the structure is
jacked up?
• Articulation
• Technical Approval(AIP)

Articulation
Bearing selection considerations
Elastomeric Bearings
• Design to BS5400 / EN1337
• Designed for loads up to approx. 4-5MN
• Minimal rotation capacity
• Available in Fixed, Free and Guided capacities
with external bonded plates
• Designed to customers design requirements for
maximum efficiency in design
• Are used with Special bearings type: -
• Fixed Shear Key Special bearing
• Guided Shear Key Special bearing

Pot Bearings
• Designed to rotate up to 0.035 radians
(2 degrees)
• Vertical deflection capacity under load
• Design to ultimate loads of 45 MN
• Available in Fixed, Free and Guided
capacities
• Designed to customers design
requirements for maximum efficiency in
design

Spherical Bearings
• Designed to rotate in excess of 0.05+ (3
degrees and over)
• Vertical deflection capacity under load
0.0mm
• Isoglide
• Design to ultimate loads of 50 MN
• Available in Fixed, Free and Guided capacities
• Designed to customers design requirements
for maximum efficiency in design
• Isoslide available in place of PTFE capable of
higher stresses and increased durability. Can
reduce size of bearing
Bodygarde: Freyssinet’s bearing protection
accessory

• Protects from water and particulates

• Can be fitted to new bearings
• Can be retrofitted to existing bearings
• Easily installed
• Easily removed for inspection
• Breathable material prevents
microenvironment within jacket
• Fire retardant version being developed
Jacking Options

• Are there designed jacking points?

• Propping
• Jack the diaphragm beams
• Install corbels
• Pier clamps
• Hanger/Needle beams
