Question 1

Describe the mechanisms of heat conduction in solids and in stationary liquids. (5 marks)

Question 2
A section of the wall whose cross-sectional area 1.0 m2, is made of three different materials with
thermal conductivity k and arranged as shown in Figure Q2. The top and the bottom section are
insulated. The temperature on left-side of the wall is fixed at 30 OC while the right-side is exposed
to wind with air temperature of 10 OC, and coefficient of convection h.
Given: k1 = 1.6 W/m.OC, k2 = 0.4 W/m.OC, k3 = 0.2 W/m.OC, h = 10 W/m2.OC
i. Sketch the thermal resistance circuit across the wall.
ii. Calculate the equivalence total resistance.
iii. Determine the rate of heat transfer through the wall
iv. Determine the temperature on the right-side of the wall.

(10 marks)
Question 3
Oil, at 25 ⁰C, flows over the upper surface of a 50 m long heated plate with a velocity of 5 m/s.
The plate is held at 45 ºC.

a) Determine the velocity and thermal boundary layer thicknesses at the middle of the plate.
(4 marks)
b) Find the distance where laminar flow changes to turbulent flow
(3 marks)
c) Find the total convection heat transfer for a 1.5 m width.

(3 marks)

Given:

Nu = 0.664ReL1/2 Pr1/3 (for laminar flow all over)

Nu = 0.037ReL0.8 Pr1/3 (for turbulent flow all over)

Nu = (0.037ReL0.8 -871).Pr1/3 (for mixed flow)
