INTRODUCTION

Supply and return air grilles and registers are considered to be

the most frequently used parts in any heating, ventilation and

www.dasco.com.kw
air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Whether the grilles and registers are kept unobtrusive, or

played up as decorative accents, their appearance and
workmanship are as important as their performance. They
are architectural as well as engineering products. With their
taut, clean lines, solid construction, silence and controlled
performance, DASCO grilles and registers are an excellent
choice for all of your HVAC requirements.

Introduction
SINGLE DEFLECTION RETURN AIR GRILLES & REGISTERS

GENERAL
Dasco Return air grilles and registers (DG-15
and DR-15) are designed to suit HVAC app-
plications where a high side wall or exposed
duct is required, they are also used for adjusti-
ing airflow patterns of air-conditioned spaces
and yet with an architectural appearance and
curved – back frames.
Return Air Grille (DG-15 H) Adjustable blades

DESCRIPTION
DG-15 and DR-15 are multi parallel and adj-
justable blade type with aerofoil section of
blades whick allow a smooth and uniform patt-
tern for quiet and low pressure drop applicat-
tion. Adjustable horizontal or vertical blades
can be supplied to control the airflow pattern
in either the horizontal or vertical planes. The
frame is curved - back as standard and can be

supplied in flat form as optional.

Nylon bushings are used to separate the blades

from the frame to eliminate rattling and to
provide positive tension when adjusting the
blades. Optional sub frame can be supplied for
concealed fixing method. Rigid corner fastene-
ers assure a solid construction. Registers are
provided with opposed blade dampers with
face projected lever for adjustment from the
face of register without any special tools. Return Air Register (Woodall Colour) (DR-15V)

ENGINEERING DATA

DEFINITIONS
- Velocity pressure (Pd) : The forward moving force of an air stream within a duct measured in
(Dynamic pressure) mm (inch) W.G. of water.
- Static pressure (Ps) : The outward force within a duct measured in mm (inch)W.G. of water.
- Total pressure (Pt) : The sum of the velocity and static pressure in mm (Inch) W.G. of water.
- Outlet velocity (Vk) : Discharge or intake velocity of an outlet or inlet in m/s (fpm) measured
with an approved calibrated velometer at specified locations relative to
the face of the outlet or inlet.
- Terminal velocity : From an outlet, in m/s (fpm), is the highest sustained velocity in the
mixed air stream arbitrarily specified and used to determine throw.
- Throw : Of an outlet, in m (feet),is the distance from the center of the outlet to
a point in the mixed air stream where the highest sustained velocity of
the mixed air stream has been reduced to a specified level.
- Drop : The vertical distance , in m (feet), to the point in a horizontally proj-
jected air stream when the highest sustained velocity of the mixed air
stream has been reduced to a specified level.
- Spread : The maximum total width in m (feet) of the air pattern at the point of
terminal velocity.
- Aspect ratio : Ratio of the length / width of a rectangular air outlet or inlet.
- Area factor Ak : Of an outlet or inlet which is also a flow factor determined from the
discharge or intake2 velocity (Vk) and the volume flow rate.
Ak = Q / Vk in m or ft.

DEFLECTION SETTINGS

0˚ Deflection 22 1/2˚ Deflection 45˚ Deflection

The figures above show the air pattern of different blade settings. It is noted that the throw and
drop will decrease as the angle of deflection increased.

Engineering Data
SPREAD REQUIREMENTS
The vane angle adjustment of grilles will affect the spread as follows:

1) For 0˚ deflection angle, the total spread of the air stream is one-third of the throw.

www.dasco.com.kw
2) For 22.5˚ deflection angle, the total spread of the air stream is about 45 percent of the
throw
3) For 45˚ deflection angle, the total spread of the air stream is two-third of the throw.

The total drop of an air stream is the sum of drop due to throw and drop due to temperature diff-
ference of air in the room and air at the grille.

NOTES :
• 0º, 22 1/2˚, 45º are spreading angles (deflection settings).
• Throw is given in feet for 50 fpm terminal velocity.
• Static pressure drop is in inches W.G. for single deflection register with fully opened damper.
• Room effect is the difference between the sound power level of a terminal device and the
sound pressure level sensed by human ears in the room, and is affected by: Room size, sound
absorption characteristic of the room surfaces, ceiling height, space volume, distance of
listener to terminal location and number of terminals.
• The basic NC levels given in the tables of performance data are based on 10-db room absorption.
• All NC, static pressure and AK values given are for single deflection register with fully opened
damper and at zero degree of deflection.

AIR BALANCING PROCEDURE

• Use measuring tools for air velocity like
ALNOR 2220 – A tip or 2220 probe, or anemothern air meter.
• Take number of measuring points (should be not less than 4)
with the probe so located and adjusted as to measure the maximum air
velocity to the air flow direction on the face of the grille as shown.
• Calculate the average measured velocity by using:

(V1+V2+…. +Vk)
V (average) =
K

• Determine the area factor Ak from the performance data tables

considering the proper size
• Calculate CFM:
CFM = Ak x Vk (Average effective velocity)

CURVED BLADE CEILING GRILLES & REGISTERS

GENERAL

DASCO curved blade-ceiling grilles and

registers are made from extruded aluminiu-
um construction with anodized finish. The

curved blades are individually adjustable and
offer maximum air pattern and control.

Curved Blade Grille - 2 way deflection

(DG - 16C - 2W)

The blades are fitted in to nylon bushings, prov-

viding noise proof performance. The curved
blades are individually adjustable allowing any
degree of deflection, in 1 way, 2 ways 3 ways
or 4 ways pattern. The air pattern can be adj-
justed in any direction, by setting the curved
blades to the desired angle. The grilles will be
supplied with opposed blade volume control
dampers, to control the flow rate. The grilles
are available with a curved back frame or flat

(DG - 16C - 4W)

The types of frames are to be specified by using model No. of frame as, curved back frame

DG-14 and DR-14 are multi parallel fixed
blade type. Blades have aerofoil sections and
are fixed at 45º angle, which will allow smooth
and uniform airflow pattern for a quiet and
low-pressure drop applications. Grilles can
be supplied in horizontal blades (DG-14 H)
or vertical blades (DG-14 V) and the blades
Return Air Register DR - 14H are slightly overlapped to prevent any see-

Both models can be supplied with opposed

blade damper to control the air volume and
are called registers (DR-14H/V). The frame
is an attractive curved – back type, however, it
can be supplied in flat type as optional. Rigid
corner fasteners assure a solid construction.
Registers are provided with opposed blade
dampers with face-projected lever for setting
adjustment from the face of the grille without
any special tools. Return air grilles and regist- Return Air Register DR - 14H
