Movie: Miracle in Cell No. 7

Overview: A story about the love between a mentally ill father and his lovingly adorable daughter.
Wrongfully accused of murder and rape, Yong-Goo was imprisoned for murder yet as bad as his
situation was, he was able to build friendships with the hardened criminals in his cell, who in return help
him see his daughter again by smuggling her into the prison. Everything goes well with even his friends
were able to figure out what really happen to the victim. In regards what to what they have found, they
present these new evidences to court. However, the head of police, the family of the victim, used his
position and power to pressure him not to fight or else and as a result the court gave him a verdict of
guilty and a punishment of death. Years pass by with realization of the injustice his father suffered; she
grown to be a fine lawyer fighting her father’s case and finally got the justice her father deserved.

Analysis: When we imagine a miracle, it usually involves the supernatural or the divine being manifest to
us mortals. We think miracles are almost synonymous to impossibilities and yet in the movie “Miracle in
Cell No. 7”, we see how a rare act of kindness formed a ripple effect in people’s lives, pushing them to
change for the better, to achieve their own versions of a miracle.

Kindness is fundamental to the human existence. We are thrust into the world as newborns and
enriched with the kindness of our parents’ nurturing for the ensuing years. Kindness broadens your life’s
frame of reference and is a symbol of respect to value the receiver. Additionally, it influences the giver
more than the receiver and has correlations with enhanced mental, emotional and physical well-being.

On the other hand, no matter how good you are as a person, the world is not the same. There
will be people out there who would not act good or understanding. In this movie, the family of the
deceased daughter which so happens to be the daughter of the chief of police used his position to
forcibly make the father to not fight or else his daughter will be put in danger. Another is the court
hearing itself is rigged to make sure the defendant has no chance of proving his innocence. The lawyer
of the defendant did not fight his case and let everything pass by and was mere for show in the court.
With all of this, the defendant was guilty of all charge and sentence to death. Yet the kindness shown by
the father and his daughter shown to the people around them have had a lasting effect for them to
change their lives for the better. A catalyst for their new life and so to as to fight for the injustice Yong-
Goo suffered. It prompted all involve to show in court and to finally set things right.

This movie also shows how the justice system, which is supposed to find the truth and serve
justice, can turned to serve powerful men for their own agenda. A justice system that supposed to be a
fair and equal force in a land of law can be use and abuse. This in turn shows whom or what can we trust
if the system in place is so easily use to serve people with influence than to seek justice.
