1. SCOPE
These specifications define the anti-corrosion requirements for the protection of metallic parts and
assemblies against ambient aggression in accordance with a functional coding system defined on the
functional drawing or in the RFQ specifications. These specifications therefore concern parts protected by
a metallic or organic coating and to assemblies comprising at least one part treated in this manner.
The required tests in these specifications are performed on complete parts or on assemblies or on part
samples.
Limitations:
This document is not applicable to stainless steel parts. For appearance parts get information from the
Renault Anticorrosion Requirements Section.
For galvanized parts, refer to ISO Standard 1461 for the corrosion resistance requirements.
For anodized parts, the corrosion resistance requirements are indicated in Product Specification 47-02-
901.
For aluminized sheet metal, the corrosion resistance requirements are indicated in Product Specification
11-04-809.
For fasteners, refer to the paragraphs on parts with a steel sheet ferrous based substrate. The technical
requirements relating to the assembly and the friction coefficients must also be taken into consideration.
In case of doubt about one of these limitations or in other cases (magnesium parts, parts assembled
before e-coat, etc.), get information from the Renault Anticorrosion Requirements Section.
2. GENERAL CONDITIONS
2.1. APPROVAL
The protective coatings used are approved according to the rules of Standard 01-70-000.
2.2. TOXICITY
In the dry condition, and whatever the conditions of part use, the protective coating shall not contain or
release any toxic products liable to inconvenience users.
When initial samples are supplied they shall be accompanied by a toxicological information sheet in
compliance with recommendation C.N.O.M.O. 75.05.010.N, duly completed.
3. REQUIRED CHARACTERISTICS
In accordance with the functional definition required on the drawing or in the part specifications, the
following criteria shall be observed:
CODES CRITERIA REQUIREMENTS
APPEARANCE ANTICORROSION
→ As0 short-term (defined by the
→ As1 medium term Renault technical
→ As2 long term policy)
PERFORATION ANTICORROSION
→ Pe0 no requirement
→ Pe1 medium-term (defined by the Renault
→ Pe2 long term technical policy)
VISIBILITY OF PARTS
→V Visible parts
Non visible parts Refer to paragraph 4.2.
→ NV
CORROSIVE AGGRESSION
→ FA Slightly damaged parts
→ MO Moderately damaged parts
→ FO Heavily damaged parts
→L
→ NL
Note: a part may have several functional codes (for example, the visibility may vary according to the
areas of the part or there may be different levels of aggression on different areas of the part).
4. CORROSION RESISTANCE
Depending on the "part visibility and corrosive aggression" criteria, a corrosion resistance requirement is
defined according to the type of protection and metallic support in the tables below.
4.1. DEFINITIONS
Definition: this coating consists of metallic elements deposited on a substrate and, possibly, covered with
a finish of a mineral or organic nature and of thickness equal to or less than 1 µm.
Metallic coating,
for example: pure zinc, lamellar zinc,
zinc-nickel, zinc-iron, etc.
Definition: this coating consists of metallic elements deposited on a substrate coated with an organic layer
of thickness equal to or less than 5 µm.
The anticorrosion requirements for this type of coating are identical to those for the metallic
coating.
Definition: this coating consists of metallic elements deposited on a substrate coated with an organic layer
of thickness greater than 5 µm.
The anticorrosion requirements for this type of coating are identical to those for the organic
coating.
Substrate
Definition: a substrate coated with an organic layer of thickness greater than 5 µm.
Substrate
The tests required in the specifications are conducted on complete parts, on assemblies or on part
samples, placed in the vehicle configuration in order to replicate the level of aggression on the vehicle.
The positioning of the parts is therefore defined in conjunction with RENAULT.
In the case of a damaged part, the definition of the damage is described in standard 02-00-005. When the
damage cannot be reproduced on the part according to the standard, the characteristics of the adapted
damage are defined in agreement with Renault (Anticorrosion Requirements Section).
Note too that in the case of test BS (ME D171058), it is requested to note any change in appearance and
that "white oxidation" and "red oxidation" are rated from the very first point that appears.
If a request is made for “no blistering” on the edges, and in case of doubt on the body shell, it is
necessary to check that there is no peeling of the film of paint on the adhesive tape after the pull-off test
(procedure described in standard 0200005 § 2.5.2).
Also note that, if the part must be subjected to several tests or if there are several requirements, several
samples must be tested.
The tables below define the corrosion requirements according to the type of protective coating and
substrate. The various requirements given in these specifications are:
- On ferrous substrates
- Salt spray test:

For joints with substrates OTHER than aluminium-steel, the tests to be preformed and the criteria to
be observed are discussed between RENAULT and the Supplier on a case-by-case basis.
For parts subjected to gritting and/or sand-blasting, the requirements indicated in the table below shall
be observed.
- Resistance to gritting:
RESISTANCE TO CHIPPING
(Test Method D24 1702)
24h at 23 °C 24h at -30 °C 100 h at θ °C
Rating≤ 3 Rating ≤ 5 Rating ≤ 4
No impact shall reach the substrate (metal surface)
Parts subjected to temperatures ≥ 80 °C shall meet the requirements of corrosion resistance defined
in paragraph 4.2; after having been exposed to heat for 1 hr:
- at the temperature θ indicated in the functional codification of the part in the case of metal coating,
- at the temperature θ for organic coatings, only if the firing temperature is less than θ.
In accordance with the functional code, engine compartment parts shall resist:
- fuels,
- window-washing fluids,
- coolants,
- fuels,
- window-washing fluids,
The anticorrosion performance of parts subjected to splashing of vehicle fluids shall not be
altered. The parts shall comply with the requirements of paragraph 4.2, after being subjected to the
test conditions described in method D27 1740 regarding organic coatings. For metal coatings, contact
Renault anticorrosion requirement section. Refer to standard 03 50 004 for the references of the fluids
concerned.
When results are delivered the supplier will present two parts that have undergone a corrosion test:
one previously polluted with vehicle fluid and the other a non-polluted part to serve as a reference.
In certain cases, the additional requirements are indicated in the functional code, in the form of a Z
and an accompanying note.
Renault may require that a part should conduct electricity (a part on which a ground conductor is
attached, for example); in this case the part shall perform the function requested.
If one or more parts are in contact with the item to be codified, the GFE (work group) shall indicate the
material of the part in contact with the part to be codified in order to avoid any risk of bi-metallic
corrosion (galvanic coupling).
The resistance of the protective coating against machining and washing fluids is assessed according
to the project of test method D27 1726. After the test, the coating shall not present any stains,
discoloration, distemper, or blistering of the coating.
After this test, the characteristics defined in paragraph 4.2 of these specifications shall not be altered.
- temporary protection for vehicle transport (Protection P5) - as per Product Specifications 48-01-
001.
The protective coating shall not be altered and shall allow the adhesion of the additional products
defined on the drawing.
Certain parts may be subjected to mechanical aggression by friction during use, e.g. seat runner
The GFE (work group) shall indicate the areas subject to such aggression on the drawing.
Parts subjected to friction shall meet the corrosion requirements after being subjected to mechanical
aggression. Conditions to be defined with the GFE (work group) responsible for the part.
In the case of functional code L, the characteristic Z6 defines the fluid or fluids concerned.
This indication shall be specified on the functional drawing for parts subject to dimensional constraints
or for parts with threaded components.
If, for functional or assembly reasons, a portion of the part must remain protection-free, then this shall
be clearly indicated in the functional drawing.
If the part is subjected to degassing after electrolytic treatment, refer to Standard 01-71-001.
This characteristic is required only for visible interior and exterior parts, except for engine compartment
parts, underbody parts and those located under the opening panels.
After 150 h of exposure to Xénotest 150 S according to Test Method D47 1431, the variation in
appearance shall correspond to an index equal to or greater than 4 on the grey scale.
After 1 000h of exposure to Xénotest 1 200 according to Test Method D27 1911, the variation in
appearance shall correspond to an index equal to or greater than index 4 on the grey scale according
to Standard NF EN 20105 part A2.
For appearance parts (example: shiny black) it is requested to rate the appearance of the part after
testing and no change of appearance is tolerance.
The requirements of the other additional characteristics are specified on the drawing or in the
specifications for the part.
The following information (refer to Standard 01-00-510) shall be indicated on the supplier drawing:
- the name of the coating proposed by reference to a normative document explaining the
characteristics of the coating.
- the compounder,
Unless specified otherwise, the dimensions on the drawing shall be the dimensions of the protected
part.
