3 Security and Safety

Service
User access to the interior of the terminal is prohibited. Only a
technician authorized by bobz GmbH may perform service - failure
to comply with this rule will void the warranty. Do not open the
Above-Deck-Unit, there are no serviceable parts inside, the housing
is sealed and trying to open it may damage the parts inside.

Compass safe distance

Below-Deck-Unit: min. 30 cm

Above-Deck-Unit: min. 100 cm

Microwave Radiation
The above-deck equipment radiates microwave power while it is
connected to the mobile data network (approx. 2 W maximum, much
less than a satellite system).

Picture 1: Mounting on vertical girder

Place the antenna with free line of sight. Do not place the antenna
near larger objects that may block the RF signal in one direction.

10
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

Picture 2: Mounting on horizontal girder

A good place is usually between the Radar system and the top
antenna mast. It should be mounted below the highest lightning
absorber, but above the funnel.

Distance to other equipment: Please make sure, that the ADU is

placed at least 1m away from any other RF antenna. In any case the
minimum distance requirements of other RF equipment, esp.
satellite systems, must be met.

4.2.2 Mount the Above-Deck-Unit

Mount the Above-Deck-Unit with at least two clamps by using the
openings in the antenna bracket as shown on the photos above.

The ADU might also be fixed by screws or bolts which are welded to
match the positions shown in the drawing in section 3.1.

4.2.3 Ground connection

Make sure to arm a ground connection between the antenna bracket
and the ship's body.

Scratch away any insulating protective coating. Use a serrated

washer and stainless steel bolts and screws.

4.2.4 Coax cable connection

4.3.1 Connect the ground stud of the BDU

GROUND CONNECTION

Connect the ground stud of the BDU

with a copper wire (min. diameter 0.5
mm) to the ship's body to prevent
electric shocks!

4.3.2 Measure ground connection

Use a multimeter to measure the ground connection between the
ADU coax cable shielding and the BDU ground clamp. The value
should be less than 10 Ohms.

4.3.3 Remaining BDU connections

After measuring the proper ground connection, connect the ADU
coax cable to the BDU's TNC socket.

Connect the 24V / 28V power supply.

Connect your laptop or other network equipment.

4.3.4 Protect ADU coax connector

After checking the connections, grounding etc., please protect the
ADU coax connector with self-amalgamating rubber tape!

4.4 Access Points

Access Points, cables etc. are not part of the standard package
and can be ordered separately from bobz GmbH.

4.4.1 Where to install?

Do not try to cover more than one deck with an access point (AP),
since you may see some signal though the deck's ceiling, but high or
good data rate is not possible.

The best place is in the gangway near the accommodations or in the

mess room.

15
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

4.4.2 Installation of the access points

From the bridge deck there need to be one LAN installation cable
(CAT7) to each access point. At each end of the installation cable a
wall socket is used, so that the cable can be easily connected or
reused.

The access points get their power over the LAN cable (Power over
Ethernet, PoE) from a network switch or power injector located on
the bridge deck. This switch is connected to the shipznet below-deck
unit.

The following picture shows an overview for one access point and
two repeater:

Version 1.3

To put the cable behind the wall and ceiling cover, the U-shaped
rails may be removed with a screw driver: See arrow in next photo.

17
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

After the U-rails are removed, the larger ceiling panels can be
loosened by unscrewing the screws, that were covered by the U-
rails.

4.4.3 Connecting the wall socket

With the provided tool, connecting the LAN cable is easy.

Remove the wall socket's back side

18
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

Strip the LAN cable, but do no untwist the pairs. Cut the shield, so
that a part gets contact with the clamp later.

Place one wire into the contact and press it down with the tool.
Use the guide marked "A" to match the wires to the contacts:

Beware: The guide may be different on some wall sockets!

6.3 BDU Configuration

6.3.1 Switch Configuration

The Below-Deck-Unit has eight individually configurable Ethernet
ports. Each port may be assigned to a specific network
configuration. Four different network configurations are available in
the default configuration:

- Communcation network: This type of network is used for ship

operation, such as software deployment, mail server, remote
management or machine-to-machine communication.

- Crew network: PCs and laptops can use the built-in DHCP server
of the BDU and network traffic is usually routed only to the shipznet
service.

- SAT1 network: This network trunk can be used to attach a

FleetBroadband unit or some other equipment with fixed IP address.

- SAT2 network: Connect any other satellite equipment like VSAT

modems, or even the office LAN for testing to this type of network
and traffic will be routed here, if available. The BDU uses DHCP to
find the right network settings.

To assign an Ethernet port to a specific network type double-click on

the LAN Configuration row you want to change.

24
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

The LAN/Network configuration can be changed on the second tab.

6.3.2 Network Configuration

The network configuration defines the IP address, netmask, gateway

IP and DNS Server addresses. Currently the LAN Configuration
name cannot be changed.

25
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

6.3.3 DHCP Server settings

Use this tab to select and change DHCP server settings for each
Network/LAN configuration. You may change settings only, if the
LAN is not configured as DHCP client.

6.3.4 Routing

26
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

Each LAN network can be enabled to send/receive packets from

another network. Use these settings to allow access from one
internal network to another, or from your SAT connection (with public
IP) to the internal network.

Do not enable inter-network routing, if you need to define firewall

rules for a LAN network.

6.3.5 Least-Cost Settings

27
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

The Least-Cost settings let you define, which outgoing network

connections are used in preference and how often it will be checked.
In the above example, Sat.2 LAN is used as main gateway, and if
not available, shipznet. If shipznet is not available, Sat.1 LAN will be
used.

The availability is tested by sending ICMP Ping messages to the

defined host 8.8.8.8 every 60 seconds in the above example. If the
ping fails for 3 times, the next available network connection will be
used. There must be only 1 ping passing again to the host to recover
the failed network connection.

6.3.6 Firewall
The firewall is used to block or enable specific protocols and ports.

28
Installation Guide
Version 1.3

To define default policies for each network, double-click a row in the

upper area. If "Masquerade" is selected, any outgoing traffic's
source IP on this interface will be translated to the IP address of the
shipznet's router and vice-versa for the incoming traffic. Enable this
setting, if private network addresses are used for the internal
networks.

To define firewall rules for a network, select the specific row. In the
lower part you may add new rules or remove rules by clicking the
'Add rule' button or the icon.

If you need to disable or enable a specific network / protocol / port

routing, do not set the destination network to "anywhere".
