ARTICLE BEGINNING

DIESEL FUEL SYSTEMS

Caterpillar 3306, 3306B & 3306C 6ÄCylinder

DESCRIPTION

Two types of fuel systems are available, either direct

injection or precombustion chamber. Both systems include: fuel tank,
fuel lines, priming pump, injection nozzle, fuel filters, check
valves, constant bleed valve, fuel injection pump and a transfer pump.

OPERATION

DIRECT INJECTION TYPE

Fuel is pulled from fuel tank through primary fuel filter and
check valves by fuel transfer pump. From the transfer pump, fuel is
pushed through secondary fuel filter to the fuel manifold. A bypass
valve keeps system pressure at 25Ä42 psi (1.8Ä3.0 kg/cmý). See Fig. 1.

Fig. 1: Direct Injection Fuel System Schematic

Courtesy of Caterpillar Tractor Co.

Constant bleed valve lets a constant flow of fuel go through

fuel return line back to fuel tank. This removes air and heat from
system. There is also a manual bleed valve that can be used when fuel
priming pump is used to remove air from system. Fuel injection pump
gets fuel from fuel manifold and pushes fuel at very high pressure
through fuel line to fuel injection nozzle.

PRECOMBUSTION CHAMBER TYPE

Fuel is pulled from fuel tank through fuel filter and into
channel behind cover. From the channel, fuel goes through check valve
into priming pump, out check valve and into housing passage. This fuel
supplies transfer pump and transfer pump output goes into housing.
Fuel in the housing supplies injection pumps and lubricant for all
moving parts in the housing. See Fig. 2.
Fig. 2: Precombustion Chamber Fuel System Schematic
Courtesy of Caterpillar Tractor Co.

Fuel can go from the housing in 3 ways. Fuel injection pumps

send some fuel to the cylinders during injection. Constant bleed valve
lets fuel go back to the fuel tank, when pressure in housing is 25Ä32
psi (1.8Ä2.2 kg/cmý). This removes heat and air from housing. The
byÄpass valve keeps fuel pressure constant at 25Ä32 psi (1.8Ä2.2
kg/cmý) at 2200 RPM. Fuel going through the byÄpass valve mixes with
fuel flow from the tank in the housing passage. From here, the mixture
goes through the transfer pump and back into the housing.

TESTING

FUEL SYSTEM

Ensure fuel tank cap vent is not plugged. Check lines for
cracks and loose connections. Ensure lines are not kinked. Check fuel
filters. Replace if necessary. Ensure there is no air in fuel system.
Bleed if necessary.

FUEL PRESSURE

Remove pipe plug from base of fuel filter. Install pressure

gauge to pipe plug opening. Operate engine at high idle and record
pressure. Pressure should be 23 psi (1.6 kg/cmý). If pressure is low,
check for blocked fuel tank cap vent, fuel line leakage, clogged fuel
filter or air in system.

INJECTORS

1) Remove all injectors. Loosen carbon from injector tip,

using Brass Wire Brush (8S2258). Attach the injector to Injector
Tester (5P4150). Check injector opening pressure. Refer to the
INJECTOR OPENING PRESSURE table. If opening pressure is not as
specified, replace injector. Also observe spray pattern. If spray
pattern is not acceptable, replace injector. See Fig. 3.

CAUTION: DO NOT let tops of fuel nozzles turn when fuel lines are
loosened or damage to nozzles will occur.

Removal (Direct Injection Engine)

1) Remove fuel injection lines. Remove clamp from nozzle.
Install Nozzle Puller (6V3129) on nozzle to be removed. Move screw out
of puller enough to engage inside lip of puller on lower stepped
diameter.
2) With nozzle bleed screw seen through clearance hole in
nozzle puller, turn screw down until tip of button goes down into
thread in hole for nozzle clamp bolt. DO NOT exceed 150 INCH lbs.
(17 N.m) on screw.
3) If nozzle cannot be removed using nozzle puller, remove
protective cap. Install Nozzle Adapter (FT1533) and Slide Hammer
(1P0074) so centerline of tools is the same as extended centerline of
fuel injection nozzle.
4) If tools in step 3 were used, replace nozzle. If tool in
step 1 was used, remove carbon dam seal on end of nozzle.

Installation
1) Drill Carbon Sealer (8S2252) out to a diameter of .334"
(8.5 mm) and to a depth of .060" (1.5 mm). Use carbon seal to install
carbon dam seal on nozzle.
2) Install new seal on fuel injection nozzle. Use Nozzle
Cleaner (8S2245) to clean bore for fuel injection. Use an open end
wrench or tap driver to turn Reamer (6V4089).
