7 Engine management system

components
1 If a fault is indicated in any of the system components, first check the wiring and connectors
between the appropriate component and the ECU (refer to Electrical System Fault Finding at the
beginning of Chapter 8, and to the Wiring diagram at the end of it). A continuity test of all wires will
locate a break or short in any circuit. Inspect the terminals inside the wiring connectors and ensure
they are not loose, bent, broken or corroded. Spray the inside of the connectors with a proprietary
electrical terminal cleaner or protector before reconnection. If the system as a whole rather than
just an individual component does not seem to function refer to Chapter 8and check the fuses and
starter circuit cut-off relay.

2 It is possible to undertake most checks on system components using a multimeter and comparing
the results with the specifications at the beginning of the Chapter. Note: Different meters may give
slightly different results to those specified even though the component being tested is not faulty – do
not consign a component to the bin before having it double-checked. However, some faults will only
become evident when a component is tested with specialised equipment, in which case the checks
should be undertaken by a Yamaha dealer.

3 If after a thorough check the source of a fault has not been identified, it is possible that the ECU
itself is faulty. Yamaha provides no test specifications for the ECU. In order to determine
conclusively that the unit is defective, it should be substituted with a known good one. If the problem
is rectified, the original unit is faulty.

Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor

Check
4 Make sure the ignition is OFF. Remove the left-hand side panel (see Chapter 7).

5 The crankshaft position sensor is in the alternator cover on the left-hand side of the engine. Trace
the wiring from the cover and disconnect it at the 2-pin connector. Using an ohmmeter or
multimeter set to the ohms x 100 scale, measure the resistance between the terminals on the sensor
side of the connector. If the result is not as specified at the beginning of the chapter, replace the
sensor with a new one (Step 7).

6 If the result is good, and you have checked the wiring and connectors as described in Step 1,
remove the alternator cover (see Chapter 8) and check whether the sensor head is fouled or the
sensor has come loose on its mounts (see illustration) .

7.6 Check the sensor head (A) and bolts (B)

Removal and installation

7 Make sure the ignition is OFF. Remove the alternator cover, then remove the stator and CKP
sensor from it (see Chapter 8) – the stator and CKP sensor come as an integrated assembly along
with the wiring sub-loom, including the neutral switch wire.

8 After installing the new sensor, turn the engine over on the starter motor to reinstate the system,
then check the fault code has been erased by turning the ignition switch OFF and then ON again. If
the code is no longer displayed the repair is complete.

Intake air pressure sensor

9 Make sure the ignition is OFF. Remove the air filter housing (see Section 8).

10 The sensor is part of the throttle body sensor assembly, containing the intake air pressure and
temperature sensors and the throttle position sensor, and is on the left-hand side of the throttle body
(see illustration) .

wire terminal in the back of the connector, with the connector still connected, and insert the
negative (-) probe into the grey/black wire terminal. Turn the ignition ON and measure the sensor
output voltage. Turn the ignition OFF.

12 If the voltage is not as specified, replace the throttle body with a new one (see Section 9) – the
sensor assembly is part of it and is not available separately.

13 For fault code 14, make sure the throttle body and sensor assembly are clean and the aperture to
the sensor is not blocked.

14 After installing the new throttle body, for fault code 13 turn the ignition switch ON, and for fault
code 14 run the engine at idle speed, to reinstate the system, then check the fault code has been
erased by turning the ignition switch OFF and then ON again. If the code is no longer displayed the
repair is complete.

Intake air temperature sensor

15 Make sure the ignition is OFF. Remove the air filter housing (see Section 8).

16 The sensor is part of the throttle body sensor assembly, containing the intake air pressure and
temperature sensors and the throttle position sensor, and is on the left-hand side of the throttle body
(see illustration 7.10) .

17 First check the wiring and connectors as in Step 1. Next, disconnect the wiring connector from
the sensor assembly. Using an ohmmeter or multimeter set to the K-ohms scale, connect the positive
(+) probe to the brown/white wire terminal in the sensor socket and the negative (-) probe to the
grey/black wire terminal and measure the resistance.

18 If the resistance is not as specified, replace the throttle body with a new one – the sensor
assembly is part of it and is not available separately.

19 After installing the new throttle body, turn the ignition switch ON to reinstate the system, then
check the fault code has been erased by turning the ignition switch OFF and then ON again. If the
code is no longer displayed the repair is complete.

Throttle position sensor

20 Make sure the ignition is OFF. Remove the air filter housing (see Section 8).

21 The sensor is part of the throttle body sensor assembly, containing the intake air pressure and
temperature sensors and the throttle position sensor, and is on the left-hand side of the throttle body
(see illustration 7.10) .

22 First check the wiring and connectors as in Step 1. Also make sure the sensor assembly is not

loose on the throttle body, and that the throttle twistgrip turns smoothly and freely from fully closed
to fully open.

23 Next, u sing a voltmeter or multimeter set to the volts (DC) scale, insert the positive (+) probe of
the meter into the grey/red wire terminal in the back of the connector, with the connector still
connected, and insert the negative (-) probe into the grey/black wire terminal. Turn the ignition ON
and measure the sensor input voltage. If the voltage is not as specified, and the grey/red wire
between the sensor and the ECU is OK, the ECU could be faulty. Turn the ignition OFF.

24 To check the output voltage, insert the positive (+) probe of the meter into the yellow wire
terminal in the back of the connector, with the connector still connected, and insert the negative (-)
probe into the grey/black wire terminal. Turn the ignition ON and measure the sensor output
voltage. Now slowly open the throttle and check that the voltage increases steadily. If the voltage in
the closed position is not as specified, or if it does not rise or rises abruptly when opened, replace
the throttle body with a new one – the sensor assembly is part of it and is not available separately.

25 After installing the new throttle body, for fault code 15 turn the ignition switch ON, and for fault
code 16 run the engine first at idle speed and then quickly open and close the throttle so the engine
races but does not exceed the red line, to reinstate the system, then check the fault code has been
erased by turning the ignition switch OFF and then ON again. If the code is no longer displayed the
repair is complete.

Engine coolant temperature sensor

26 The sensor is in the back of the cylinder head on the right side (see illustration) . First check
the wiring and connectors as in Step 1.

29 Make sure the ignition is OFF. First check the wiring and connectors as in Step 1. Also make
sure the sensor is not loose on its mounts.

30 Displace the sensor (see Step 35) leaving the wiring connected.

31 Using a voltmeter or multimeter set to the volts (DC) scale, insert the positive (+) probe of the
meter into the yellow/green wire terminal in the back of the connector, with the connector still
connected, and insert the negative (-) probe into the grey/black wire terminal. Turn the ignition ON.
Hold the sensor in its normal position when the bike is upright with the UP mark facing up, then tilt
it 65° to one side and then the other, in each case noting the voltage reading on the meter. Turn the
ignition OFF.

32 If the voltage is not as specified at the beginning of the chapter when the sensor is upright and
tilted over, replace the sensor with a new one. Note the top surface of the sensor is marked UP.

33 After installing the new sensor, turn the ignition switch ON to reinstate the system, then check
the fault code has been erased by turning the ignition switch OFF and then ON again. If the code is
no longer displayed the repair is complete.

Removal and installation

34 The sensor is under the passenger seat (see illustration 7.28) . Remove the seat (see Chapter
7).

35 Make sure the ignition is OFF. Undo the screws securing the sensor, noting the washers.

36 The sensor is on the front wheel (see illustration) . Make sure the ignition is OFF. Trace the
wiring from the sensor and disconnect it at the connector under the fairing. C heck the wiring and
connectors as in Step 1.

7.36 Speed sensor (arrowed)

37 Support the machine on an auxiliary stand so the front wheel is off the ground.

38 Using a voltmeter or multimeter set to the volts (DC) scale, insert the positive (+) probe of the
meter into the grey wire terminal in the back of the connector, with the connector still connected,
and insert the negative (-) probe into the grey/black terminal. Turn the ignition switch ON and rotate
the front wheel by hand in its normal direction of rotation. As the engine turns, the output voltage
should fluctuate between the two levels given in the specifications at the beginning of the Chapter.
Turn the ignition OFF.

39 If the voltage is not as specified, replace the sensor with a new one.

40 After installing the new sensor, take the bike for a ride making sure you exceed 20 mph (30 kph)
to reinstate the system, then check the fault code has been erased by turning the ignition switch
OFF and then ON again. If the code is no longer displayed the repair is complete.

Removal and installation

41 The sensor is on the front wheel (see illustration 7.36) . Make sure the ignition is OFF.

42 Trace the wiring from the sensor and disconnect it at the connector under the fairing. Feed the
wire back to the sensor, releasing it from any ties and guide, noting its routing.

43 Refer to Chapter 6and remove the front wheel to free the sensor.
