Each group is assigned with a task to be carried out.

The group is required to conduct on a

proposed site which is to be set out for a new development. The location of the site must be
evaluated and permanently marked for control points. Six (6) control points (CP) are to be
located within the vicinity of the land acquired. Linear and horizontal control must be
provided to the points for further development of the site. The area and CP are sketched
showing the location of the stations as shown in Figure 1.

Equipment:

1. Theodolite with Tripod

2. Prismatic Compass with tripod legs (magnetic bearing of initial point)
3. Tripod (At least two (2) units)
4. Plum bob and string on tripod (observe to target point)
5. Tape (For linear measurement)
6. Pegs and hammer (If necessary)

Procedures

1. At least six control points (CP) with minimum length of 30 m have to be established
at the proposed site. Then pegs are driven into the ground at the CP for permanent
markings of the area. (Note: the height of the pegs must be 20 mm from the ground
level to avoid hap hazards and accidents)
2. The prismatic compass is set at station A and it is centred and levelled with the help
of a plum bob. The instrument is then temporarily adjusted by levelling both the
bubble tube for the instrument to be perpendicular to the vertical axis.
3. The instrument is then adjusted for observation of bearings by observing the
magnetic north to determine the magnetic bearing for the last line to be observed.
4. The prismatic compass is then replaced by the theodolite, which is temporarily
adjusted and the bearings of the last line is inserted into the theodolite and noted as
back bearing. (Note: The position of the theodolite is face left)
5. Two tripods are set and temporarily adjusted at station E and B, respectively. Plumb
bob with string are placed on to the tripod as the station target for sharp
observation.
6. Point E is sighted by observing the back bearing of line AE. Then point A is sighted
and observes the fore bearing of line AB. The readings are then recorded as face left
in Sheet 1 given.
7. The horizontal axis and the vertical axis are rotated 180o and sight the back bearing
of the same line. (Note: The theodolite is in face right)
8. The fore bearing is then sighted and recorded as face right in Sheet 1 given.
9. The instrument is then shifted to point B and it is set up as in (2) and (3).
10. Procedures (4) to (8) are then repeated until all CPs are located and observed.
