Chapter 1 AmpliTube 2
1.1 AmpliTube 2
AmpliTube 2 is the sequel to the most popular guitar amp and effects plug-
in, raising the standard to an unprecedented level of hi-quality emulation
and extreme flexibility. A completely redesigned application, AmpliTube 2
maintains its traditional ease of use while offering tremendously enhanced
new features like:
• Build your own custom Amp with the extreme flexibility of combining
between separate Pre, EQ, Power Amp, Cabinet + Microphone modeling
which make up more than 20,000 possible amp combinations.
DSM™ gives special and unique results when applied to circuit emulations
where the non-linearity is the main characteristic of the processor, such as in
distortion, fuzz, overdrive stomp boxes, tube guitar preamplifiers and power
amps, and analog compressors and limiters. The DSM™ working principle
1 - AmpliTube 2 13
AmpliTube 2
®
DSM™ takes the next step. It continuously adapts the “shape” of the analog
circuit instead of applying a static snapshot. By using more complex math-
ematical functions, a more articulated and musical response is possible,
making DSM™ ideal for modeling tube preamps and tube power amps.

Launch Pro Tools and create your new session. If playing/recording guitar,
create a mono audio track. Select AmpliTube 2 Mono/Stereo among RTAS
plug-ins as the insert for that audio track. The AmpliTube 2 interface will
then open. If you are using Pro Tools LE, when the track is place in record
monitor, you will be able to here the effect while recording.
Tip: If you are using Pro Tools TDM and recording a guitar track
while listening to Amplitube 2, you should insert a TDM plug-in like
Digidesign’s “TRIM” before AmpliTube 2 RTAS. This will let you hear
AmpliTube 2 RTAS while recording on a TDM system, otherwise Pro
Tools will bypass the RTAS plug-in (AmpliTube 2 in this case) as soon as
the track will be REC enabled.
Launch Cubase™. Click on the audio or instrument track you wish to add AmpliTube
to. In the inspector window on the left, click on the dark blue bar that says “Inserts”
or click on the “e” button beside the track name at the top of the inspector.
Once the inserts are visible (under the insert menu on the Inspector, or
on the left side of the audio channel editor window) click on empty insert.
Select “AmpliTube 2”. At this point, if you play back audio, you should be able
to route sound through your AmpliTube 2 plug-in.
Launch Logic™. Insert AmpliTube 2 on the desired track from the mixer win-
dow. The AmpliTube 2 edit window will automatically open.
Launch Digital Performer (4.1 or newer) and create your new session. Go to

the Mixer View. On your audio track, select AmpliTube 2 in the insert. The
AmpliTube 2 edit window will automatically open. You will now be able to
hear the plug-in on the audio you’re recording or playing back.
Launch Sonar and create your new session. Open the CONSOLE (pressing
ALT+3) and locate the audio track you wish to add AmpliTube to. Right click
into the FX INSERT AREA (dark square in upper area of the AudioTrack) on
the mixer and choose “AmpliTube 2” from the AUDIO EFFECTS sub-menu.
The AmpliTube 2 interface will then appear.
Launch Live and click on one of the audio or virtual instrument tracks in the
“Mixer Drop Area”. Notice in the “Track View” (bottom window), the text
“Drop Audio Effects” appears.
Now, in the “Browser Window” (window on the left hand side of the screen),
click the Plug-in Browser button (looks like an electric plug). Browse to
AmpliTube 2 and click/drag it into the “Track View”. Once AmpliTube 2 loads,
it will appear as a “Device” with an XY controller on it.
To view the AmpliTube 2 interface click the “edit plug-in panel” (small
wrench) button at the top of the Device window.

This means there are two independent stomp effects, amps, cabinet,
and rack effect signal chains. So you can create a guitar rig with two
independent amplifier setups, use the two rigs in an extensive single
figure 2.3 figure 2.4 guitar amp setup, or a combination of the two using the flexible routing
system provided.
Flexible Routing: The two signal paths can be patched together to cre-
ate even more complex guitar setups. There are eight preset routing
configurations, providing easy access to sophisticated effects and amp

2.4 Automation
Please note that all the available parameters in AmpliTube2 are listed in
automation parameters, not just the ones that are being currently used.
For example if you want to automate the EchoMan “Blend” parameter and
the EchoMan stomp is set on Stomp A, just scroll the automation parameters
up to “EchoMan A: Blend”.
This means that Stomp: EchoMan, Rig: A, Parameter: Blend (figure 2.16).
Important notice: If you insert two stomps of the same type on the same
Rig, such as, for example two EchoMans, only the first one of the two will
be automated. If you need to automate two Stomps or Rack FX’s of the same
type, just insert one on Rig A and the other one on Rig B.

figure 3.1
To fully obtain high sound quality from AmplitTube 2, first you need to cor-
rectly connect the guitar to your computer.
INPUTS TO USE:
Hi-Z inputs.
Instrument inputs.
The Microphone XLR input can ONLY be used if you are using an active
DI BOX between the guitar 1/4” Plug and the Mic XLR input.
NOT TO USE:
Regular Line inputs.
NEVER connect your guitar directly to line inputs
NEITHER -10dB nor +4dB inputs can be used for your guitar
Once you have successfully connected your guitar to your computer, you will
need to setup the Input Gain on your audio interface.
Or
Increase the gain knob on your interface to make the Input Lever meter
on AmpliTube 2 reach almost full scale when played hard enough, then
decrease the gain on your interface slightly.
There are input and output level controls on the I/O interface. This makes it
easy to fine tune the input gain for proper preamp driving (figure 3.2). The
meter next to the input trim gives an accurate representation of the input
figure 3.2 signal.
3 - Input/Output Interface 21
AmpliTube 2 ®
If you properly connected and adjusted the Interface Gain knob as explained
in section leave the input control on AmpliTube 2 where it is by default, at
its center position (0 dB).
The input level meter (figure 3.3) should peak almost at its max when you
play the hottest passages, if it’s too low increase the Input Level knob. If it’s
too high, lower it. Pay attention that if the signal is too hot the instrument
figure 3.3 input could be overloading the Audio Interface.
If the output level needs to be adjusted, change the master trim (figure 3.4).
There is a meter to the right of the master trim that shows the output level
and an overload light to the far right of the meter. Use this meter to gauge
figure 3.4 how the level should be adjusted. To reset the RED clipping indicator just
click on it.
For added flexibility, pan and volume control for the individual selected
modules are included (figure 3.5). The volume control fine tunes the output
level on any module. The pan control adjusts the pan on stereo modules.
figure 3.5 Only the CAB and RACK can be panned. These controls should usually be
kept at their default center position.
When using high gain and naturally noisy guitar effects, it is often good
to use a noise gate to minimize the amount of unnecessary noise passing
through the guitar rig (figure 3.6).
figure 3.6
THRESH. (Threshold): Sets the threshold level for the signal. When the
signal drops below the set threshold level, the noise gate silences the
signal. Usually keep the Threshold level at the lowest possible value
(fully counterclockwise) and set it higher only when you need the gate
to work.
REL. (Release): This sets the gate release time. Higher values will result
in a gate that takes a longer amount of time to close again when the
input signal disappear.
3.5 Navigation
The navigation buttons scroll between the modules, simplifying their selec-
tion (figure 3.7).
figure 3.7
22 3 - Input/Output Interface
AmpliTube 2 ®
3.6 Tune
The Preferences menu allows for switching oversampling On and Off for
different AmpliTube 2 modules and setting the modeling resolution for the
power amplifier models (figure 3.9).
figure 3.9
Enabling oversampling improves the sound quality significantly when the
signal is heavily distorted. Please note that this will result in a higher CPU
usage. If you use very high gain sounds and the distortion obtained by using
a Preamplifier such as the “Modern Tube Lead” or the “British Tube Lead 2”
we suggest enabling Oversampling on Preamps.
Enabling “High Resolution” will improve the dynamic and musical response
of the power amplifiers, whereas the CPU usage will be somewhat higher.
Switch off High Resolution only if your computer does not have sufficient
CPU power for the session.
3.8 Info
The info pages provide useful information about Amplitube 2 (figure 3.11).
For example, you will find the version number, instructions about how to
setup your audio path, and a brief explanation about how to get three basic
figure 3.11 amp sounds (figure 3.12).

The module selector performs multiple functions (figure 4.1). First, it allows
you to select the different modules in AmpliTube 2. It also displays the dual
signal paths. Another function of the module selector is to select and display
the eight different signal paths.
figure 4.1
AmpliTube 2 provides two discrete signal paths; each one containing stomp
box, amplifier, cabinet, rack modules. With the use of eight different presets,
these two signal paths can be configured in multiple variations allowing
a tremendous amount of flexibility. This is a very important feature as it
allows routing a guitar signal to multiple amplifiers or cabinets; or setup
two separate six stomp pedal setups or one twelve pedal setup.
The preset buttons to the left of the module selector choose the signal path
of the guitar rig (figure 4.2). Clicking on the individual buttons or using the
up/down arrows will select the different signal paths.
figure 4.2
Here are the eight different signal paths:
1: All stomp effects and rack effects into one amp rig (figure 4.3)
6: Two separate amp setups with separate stomps into two independent
rack effects (figure 4.8)
figure 4.7 figure 4.8
7: Two separate stomp effects setups into two separate amp rigs into all the
rack effects (figure 4.9)

AmpliTube 2 ®
One of the key features in AmpliTube 2 is the Preset Manager (figure 5.1).
This system allows global Presets as well as individual Presets for the
STOMP, AMP, CAB, and RACK modules, so adding a specific stomp setup or
rack effect to a custom amplifier rig is easier than ever before.
figure 5.1
As with any of the drop down menus in AmpliTube 2, you can either click
on the Preset Selector and choose from the drop down menu or click the
up/down arrows and scroll through the Presets. Depending on whether the
Presets Manager is set for Global or Module operation, the Presets list you
see here will change accordingly to the selected module (figure 5.2).
PRESET FOLDER: opens the Presets folder for immediate manual interven-
tion on location, grouping, naming, backup of the Preset files via standard
OS window (figure 5.3).
figure 5.3
figure 5.2 GLOBAL: changes the Preset Manager to load and save global Presets
(figure 5.4). These Presets store all the parameters for all the modules. The
letters on this button will be illuminated when active. When GLOBAL is
selected only GLOBAL Presets will be visible when clicking on the menu.
figure 5.4
MODULE: changes the Preset Manager to load and save module specific
Presets (figure 5.5). When selected, the letters on this button will illumi-
nate. This button’s label will change depending on which module is select-
ed. The label will correspond with STOMP, AMP, CAB, and RACK modules. If
5 - Preset Manager 27
AmpliTube 2 ®
the TUNER module is selected the module button will stay blank, as there
is no Preset data for the tuner module. When MODULE is selected, only
Presets related to the currently visible module will be listed. For example,
when STOMP is visible only STOMP Presets will be listed.
figure 5.5
SAVE: saves the current setup as a Preset. If the global button is selected,
then it will save the parameters for all the modules in AmpliTube 2. If the
module button is on then it will save the Preset for the selected module.
SAVE AS: functions like the save button but always prompts for a new name
in the save dialogue.
DELETE: deletes the current selected Preset. THIS CAN NOT BE UNDONE!!!
To save a Preset, you must first decide whether you want to save a global or
a module specific Preset. As explained in section 4.2 a global Preset saves
the parameters for all of the modules and a module Preset saves parameters
for a specific module. Select the appropriate Preset Manager mode: either
GLOBAL or MODULE.
Click the save button (figure 5.6). A pop up window will appear (figure 5.7).
figure 5.6
At the top of this window, you can specify a folder where you would like
to save the Preset or create a new folder to save in. In the middle field on
this pop up window, type the name of the Preset. The bottom field makes
AmpliTube 2 auto overwrite when you click Save. This will allow you to save
quicker, but if not careful could unintentionally overwrite Preset that you
figure 5.7 wanted to keep.
Click the SAVE button in the pop up window (figure 5.8). Your Preset is now
saved. It will now appear in the Preset Selector.

Select a Clean Preamp, note that Clean preamps do not have a GAIN knob,
as in hardware amps, for example select “American Tube Clean 1” or “British
Tube 30TB” (figure 6.2).
figure 6.2
Check that the Amp VU Meter does not reach the RED area, to avoid crunch-
ing the sound (figure 6.3).
If the output level is too low increase the LEVEL knob, NOT the Amp Volume,
in order to keep the sound CLEAN (figure 6.4).
figure 6.3
figure 6.4
6 - Getting Started 29
AmpliTube 2 ®
Select a Clean Preamp like “British Tube 30TB” or a moderate gain lead
preamp like the “British Tube Lead 1” (figure 6.6).
figure 6.6
Increase the Amp Volume in order to push the power amp to its limit and
getting it to crunch, the Amp VU Meter will be in the RED area, this is normal
figure 6.7 and typically desirable (figure 6.7).
If you need more Crunch just increase the Plug-In input level knob (figure
figure 6.8
6.8) this will overload the Amplifier even more.
If the output level is too high and the CLIPPING indicator goes on just lower
the LEVEL knob, not the Amp Volume (figure 6.9). To reset the clipping
figure 6.9 indicator, click on it.
30 6 - Getting Started
AmpliTube 2 ®
Select a Lead preamp like the “Modern Tube Lead”, note that Lead preamps
have an active GAIN knob, as is the case with hardware amps (figure 6.11).
figure 6.11
Set the Amp Volume knob to 4-5 max (figure 6.12).
Set the GAIN to the preferred setting for the style. Adjust the Amp Volume
so that it’s not too high, keeping the VU Meter out of the RED area.
Experimenting with high gain and high volumes at the same time is sug-
figure 6.12 gested only when searching for extreme crunch lead sounds. For tight high
gain sounds it is good to keep the power amp VU Meter out of the RED area
(figure 6.13).
figure 6.13
6.4 Creating your own Amp Setups
To get started with AmpliTube 2 let’s create an amp rig. Notice in the module
selector, there are two signal paths (figure 6.14).
figure 6.14
These signal paths can be routed in multiple ways by selecting on of the
eight signal path presets. Let’s choose preset 1 (figure 6.15).
figure 6.15
Notice that the signal path progresses as follows:
TUNER - STOMP A - STOMP B – AMP A – CAB A – RACK A – RACK B - OUT
6 - Getting Started 31
AmpliTube 2 ®
Now let’s select an amp to start with. Click on the “AMP A” box on the module
selector (figure 6.16).
figure 6.16
Once you are viewing the Amplifier head, make sure that the “MATCH”
button is turned on, on the EQ and AMP Models. Under the PRE Model,
select “British Tube 30TB” (figure 6.17). This will be the amp we use for this
demonstration.
Now with the amp selected let’s select the speaker cabinet we are going to
use. Select “CAB A” from the module selector (figure 6.18).
figure 6.17
figure 6.18
This will open up the Speaker cabinet in the interface window. By default,
the speaker selected should be “2X12 Open Vintage”. Turn off the “MATCH”
button and select “4x12 Modern Closed” (figure 6.19).
figure 6.19
In the mic model window, select “Dynamic 421”. To add some room ambi-
ence to the sound increase the ambience slider to around 3. When you click
on a control and move it, the value for that control shows up on the Input/
Output interface at the bottom of the screen (figure 6.20).
figure 6.20
32 6 - Getting Started
AmpliTube 2 ®
figure 6.21
Under the first effect slot, click on “Modulation – Chorus -1”. This will load
a classic analog chorus effect (figure 6.22). On the next effect slot click on
“Distortion – Overscream”. This will load a classic overdrive effect that will
compliment our amp setup. Set the drive to around 3.6 (figure 6.23). In addi-
tion, there are ten more effects to be used.
figure 6.24
6 - Getting Started 33
AmpliTube 2
®
In the first effect slot select “Delay & Reverb – Digital Delay” (figure 6.25).
figure 6.25
Obviously we could add more effects, change more settings on the modules
that we have open and create a much more elaborate guitar rig, but this
should give you a basic idea on how to navigate AmpliTube 2.
The next thing we need to do is save our preset. To do this locate the preset
manager window to the top left of the interface. Notice that there is several
buttons underneath the preset selector. Because we want to save all the set-
tings for this guitar rig (stomps, amp, speaker, and rack effects) make sure
that the global button is selected (figure 6.26).
With the global button selected click save and give the preset a name and
figure 6.26
save it. If you now click on the preset selector window, our newly created
preset will appear in the drop down menu.
Now suppose that we want to save just our stomp effects setup. This is also
possible with the advanced preset manager created for AmpliTube 2. First
click the STOMP A button on the module selector (figure 6.27).
Then look at the Preset Manager area. Notice that the button next to GLOBAL
figure 6.27
now says STOMP. Click this button and is should illuminate (figure 6.28).
Now when you click save you will only save the STOMP effects that you have
figure 6.28
configured. Give this stomp setup a name and save it. If you now look in the
preset manager, you will find this newly save STOMP preset can be loaded
independently to the rest of the modules in AmpliTube 2.
34 6 - Getting Started
AmpliTube 2 ®
figure 7.1
To access the tuner, click the TUNER button on the module selector. This
tuner is a fully automatic chromatic tuner, meaning that there is no need to
manually select the note you are going to tune. The tuner will automatically
detect and show which note you’re playing. On the left there is an On/Off
button for the tuner (figure 7.2). Setting the switch to the ON position will
turn on the Tuner.
figure 7.2
There is a mute control as well (figure 7.3). This makes it possible to silence
the guitar signal while tuning, a very useful feature for live performance.
These bypass and mute controls are the same controls that appear on the
top right side of the AmpliTube 2 interface (figure 7.4).
Under the On/Off and mute controls, TUNE displays the tuning reference
figure 7.3 being used. The default reference is 440 Hz. This can be adjusted by clicking
on the display. A cursor will appear, use backspace and cursor buttons to
move and edit the value entering numbers, the standard and most common
tuning reference is 440 Hz, and the possible range is from 425 to 455 Hz
(figure 7.5).
figure 7.4
The right side of the tuner displays the detected note value and the fine tun-
ing in cents (figure 7.6). This is also visible on the bottom of the AmpliTube
2 interface with the fine tuning shown graphically (figure 7.7).
The main feature in the tuner is obviously the graphical tuner interface (fig-
figure 7.5 ure 7.8). Based on a high end rackmount tuner, AmpliTube 2’s tuner allows
for precise and easy tuning.

To change the stomp effect configuration, click the STOMP button on the
module selector (figure 8.2). The stomp module allows you to freely config-
ure six stomp pedal effects at a time. Featuring effects modeled after some
of the most legendary stomp pedals in history, there is ample flexibility
to emulate classic guitar sounds as well as create your own all new amp
sounds.

You can select different stomp effects by either clicking on one of the six
displays under the pedal board (figure 8.7) or using the up and down arrows
to scroll through the different effects (figure 8.8). The effects are organized
into categories for easier navigation.
figure 8.7 Like a hardware guitar rig, each stomp effect’s controls are displayed on
the stomp box (figure 8.9). When you adjust a rotary or slide control on the

Classic small-power old style power amp. This will sound clean only at very
low Volume levels. When turned up it will have a magic growl quality that’s
only possible with these particular power amp stages.
High power British style power amp. Very tight and clean up to high levels,
typically used in combination with high gain preamps because it will not make
preamp driven power chords dirty even at relatively high Volume levels.
Typical British 50W head power amp. Will deliver an amazingly musical
crunchiness when driven to the red area. Pop rock crunch rhythm parts will
sound perfect if driven by this power amp pushed to its limits instead of
using a preamp’s saturation.
The tightest power amp in AT2.0. Very fast and clean. Use this for crystal
clear clean sounds, or in conjunction with an extreme power lead preamp

Clean sounds can be more present and detailed if miked ON-AXIS, CLOSE.
If you feel the sound to be too big for the mix try moving the mic FAR from

CLOSE mic positions, especially when using bright Mikes like “Dynamic 57”.
An alternative for these kind of sounds is ON-AXIS, CLOSE position using
the Dynamic 441 mike.
10.4.1 Dynamic 57
This is a model of the popular small diaphragm dynamic mic (figure 10.20).
figure 10.21 Its bright, edgy sound has made it a widely used guitar amp mic.
Probably the second most popular dynamic mic to use on guitar amps (fig-
ure 10.21), this model provides a equally pleasing sound, but is a warmer
than the 57.
figure 10.22
10.4.3 Dynamic 441
This model has a flatter frequency response than the other dynamic mics
(figure 10.22). This mic is highly regarded as a guitar mic and used widely
in studios all over the world.
10.4.4 Condenser 87
This is a model of one of the most popular large diaphragm mics ever (figure
figure 10.23 10.23). It can be found in any large recording studios mic locker. Because
of it’s excellent frequency response curve, the 87 has become the go to mic
when needing a clean, flattering sound.
10.4.5 Condenser 84
The Condenser 414 is modeled after another highly regarded large dia-
phragm condenser microphone (figure 10.25). It is a bright, open micro-

Chapter 13 Troubleshooting
The iKey is very similar to Steinberg keys, but it’s red and carries the
IK logo on it.
The iKey act as an electronic wallet and can include one or more
“Licenses” for one or more products.
The required IK registration (see this document later on) has nothing
to do with the iKey, which is “ready” to go as soon as it is taken out of
the box.
I have changed my studio computer, and now the plug-in is asking for
authorization again, do I need a new authorization code?
No. When you authorized the product for the first time you will receive
an Authorization Code which is tied with the iKey you used at that time.
If you are still using that iKey, the same authorization code you received
on your old computer will work for the new one. So reinsert the same
Serial Number and Authorization code you previously received by
email.

I am a Steinberg Cubase (or Nuendo) user, can I use my Syncrosoft USB key
to run my AmpliTube 2?
Yes, you must simply transfer the license from the included iKey to your
Steinberg key. This is done through the LCC (License Control Center)
which is installed with the product and can also be downloaded from
the Syncrosoft website.
This has to be done connecting both the Keys to the same machine (Mac
or PC) which must be connected to the Internet. For further information
on transferring licenses please refer to the LCC’s Help menu.
Before launching the installer, as soon as I insert the iKey I have windows
displaying the “Found New Hardware Wizard” and I don’t know what to
do.
Cancel the Wizard and DO NOT plug the iKey before installing the
AMPLITUBE 2 plug-in. Plug the iKey only when the AmpliTube 2
installer asks for it.
When starting the installer for AmpliTube 2 make sure to remove ALL
Syncrosoft keys! This means IKeys and Steinberg Keys! Otherwise there
will be issues with the installation.
The Windows Wizard will install the drivers automatically. Click Finish
to close the Windows Wizard.
I have installed AmpliTube 2 and inserted the iKey but the plug-in is not
authorized. Why?

Your USB key is not plugged in. Simply shut down your host application
and insert your iKey or Steinberg key, now reload your host and insert
AmpliTube 2.
You have to launch it from inside an audio program like, Sonar, Cubase,
Pro Tools, etc.

Copy or write down the Digital ID. Now you need to go to the website of
the product you have, click on the Registration button. Now fill out the
form. Paste or type the Digital ID in the correct location. Note that this
must be the Digital ID from the computer you’re going to use the prod-

uct with. Remember to write your serial number and a working e-mail
address. Note: The Digital ID and Auth code WILL NOT have any O’s or
I’s ONLY ones & zeros.
Check your email at the e-mail address you specified. You will receive
the Authorization Code immediately.
Again, start your audio sequencer/host program. Insert after the Digital
ID, your serial number and the Authorization Code. Press “OK”. Now it
will be authorized!
With the new IKey authorization system there is no need for multiple
authorization codes. Once you have an authorization code, AmpliTube
2 is permanently registered to your IKey. This code can be used on any
computer. It only requires you to have you IKey to use it.
First always make sure that you entered the correct numbers. We recom-
mend using the Copy & Paste function to make sure that typos are not
to blame.
Log into the user area to check all the numbers go to:
https://www.ikstore.com/Login/IKLogin.cgi
This will display your Serial #, Digital ID & Registration code. If all
the numbers are correct please contact IK technical support for further
assistance.

We would like to draw your attention to the following part of the license
agreement:
Here you can get software updates, new bonus material, etc.
Your username and password will be in the first auth email you would
have received. If you no longer have the email and do not know your
user info, enter your email address at the bottom of the page and it will
generate a new one and email it to you.
If you have it, but it doesn’t seem to work, take the time to make sure
your spelling was right.

Be sure to cut off all the leading and trailing spaces! When registering
online and installing it on your machine, we suggest you to write the
codes all UPPERCASE. When possible, we always suggest to copy and
paste.
I want to re-register but the online form doesn’t let me do it! What’s
wrong?
