1. Ignition system:

1.1 General:
GE Jenbacher gas engines are equipped with a microprocessor-controlled capacitor discharge ignition
system.
The ignition system is run with a supply voltage of 24 V DC.

1.2 Design and function:


Depending on the engine type, either a 1-pickup or 3-pickup design is used.
The firing point is generally measured at cylinder no. 1 [°CA before TDC].
A scale is located for this purpose on the flywheel.

1.2.1 Ignition system with 1-pickup design:

• Firing sequence:
The firing sequence is adjusted by adapting the ignition box.

• Ignition pulse:
A magnetic disc on the camshaft timing gear generates pulses at the pickup, which then sends the signal
(firing point) on to the ignition box.
These signals are processed by the ignition box, which then triggers the ignition in the corresponding
cylinder.
The ignition box supplies the ignition energy to the ignition coils, which then generate the high tension
voltage for the spark plugs.

• Firing point:
The firing point is optimised by the engine management system depending on operating conditions and
type of fuel gas used. If the engine is designed for multi-gas operation then there is a specific firing point
pre-set for each type of fuel gas.

1.2.2 Ignition system with 3-pickup design:

• Firing sequence:
The firing sequence is adjusted by adapting the ignition box.

• Ignition pulse:
One pickup (camshaft timing gear) supplies the signal for ignition-TDC on cylinder no. 1
One pickup (flywheel) supplies the signal for TDC on cylinder no. 1.
One pickup (starter pinion on the flywheel) is used to determine the engine speed.
These signals are processed by the ignition box, which then triggers the ignition in the corresponding
cylinder.
The ignition box supplies the ignition energy to the ignition coils, which then generate the high tension
voltage for the spark plugs.

• Firing point:
The firing point is optimised by the engine management system depending on operating conditions and
