Course Description

This course extends the concepts of static electric and magnetic fields to time-varying
fields that give rise to electromagnetic waves. Maxwell’s equations are presented as
mathematical description of laws governing these waves. Propagation of electromagnetic
waves through different types of media and their behavior at interfaces is explored.
Transmission lines and waveguides are introduced as guiding structures for the
propagation of electromagnetic waves. Finally, antennas are described as means of
transmitting and receiving electromagnetic radiation directly through space.

Course Status

Core course for electrical engineering and physics majors

Course Delivery Method

There will be two lectures, each of 75 minutes and one recitation/tutorial of 50 minutes
per week. Homework will be handed out at regular intervals.

Policies and Guidelines

1. Quizzes can be un-announced.

2. Homework will be due at the beginning of the class on the due date. Late homework will
not be accepted.
3. You are allowed to collaborate on homework. However, copying solutions is absolutely
not permitted. Offenders will be reported for disciplinary action as per university rules.
4. Any appeals on grading of homework, quiz or midterm scores must be resolved within
one week of the return of graded material.
5. Attendance is in lectures and tutorials strongly recommended but not mandatory.
However, you are responsible for catching the announcements made in the class.
